"Following months of speculation, Deadline is now hearing from several sources close to the project that not only is Damon Lindelof developing a new Star Wars film for Lucasfilm but that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has been set as director. Lindelof is co-writing the project, though it is unknown at this time who his writing partner might be. Insiders say the script is still being written which means production is likely far out. That said, sources add it was important to Lucasfilm and Lindelof that a director be brought on so that person’s own vision for where they see this story headed gets included in the script.

Lucasfilm and reps for Obaid-Chinoy could not be reached for comment.

As for what the film is actually focused on, that will remain a under wraps as this project remains one of more guarded secrets in all of Hollywood. As for when we will see this film, while it still seems a ways off, the feeling is given how pro-active execs were in finding a director for this film, that this Star Wars feature seems to have the most momentum out of all all the films currently in development at the studio. 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker was the last film to bow in theaters with the studio focusing on its TV projects over recent years since then. That said they have a number of films in development including this one and Lucasfilm has been pretty clear they want to make sure the next series of films has a story they are happy with and don’t see a need to rush out that next franchise.

As for Obaid-Chinoy, the highly-sought after director continues to build on her strong ties with Disney after successfully directing several episodes of Ms. Marvel for Marvel Studios. Best known for directing her Oscar-winning documentary shorts Saving Face and A Girl in the River, The Price of Forgiveness, the Oscar and Emmy-winning director also recently committed to directing Paramount’s adaptation of Brilliance which is being developed as a starring Vehicle for Will Smith.

She is repped by CAA and Fox Rothschild."

Times like this make you wish Hollywood still had in-house writers who could be counted on to deliver competent escapist genre entertainment.

Doubt they could get him but Lucasfilm ought to let Christopher McQuarrie set his price and give him free reign. Anybody who’s paid any attention over the last twenty years knows Lindelof is a walking red flag.

McQuarrie is too busy playing second fiddle to Tom Cruise.

Some additional details from THR -

"The secret Star Wars movie project that is being led creatively by Damon Lindelof was thrust into the open Sunday night when it was revealed that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel, was on board as helmer.

The project has been in the works for months, and while Lindelof is getting the Wookiee-sized share of attention, thanks in no small part to a pedigree that includes co-creating TV sensation Lost and shepherding the acclaimed HBO series Watchmen, he is by no means the only person involved in the project.

In fact, if Lost and Watchmen, as well as The Leftovers, another beloved series Lindelof created, have shown anything, it’s that one of the writer’s chief talents is picking gifted collaborators.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Lindelof is writing the new Star Wars script with Justin Britt-Gibson, a young and rising writer who worked as an executive story editor on Guillermo del Toro’s vampire drama, The Strain, and wrote episodes of Starz’s The Counterpart, a series that deals with parallel dimensions and starred J.K. Simmons.

Britt-Gibson, however, comes to the job after a secret (it’s always secret with Star Wars, isn’t it?) writers room that began coming together after this year’s Star Wars Celebration. The room held a two-week session in July and at the table were Patrick Somerville, who worked with Lindelof on Leftovers and then went on to create the buzzy Station Eleven; Rayna McClendon, a consulting producer on Lucasfilm’s own Obi-Wan Kenobi and writer on the company’s upcoming Willow series; and Andy Greenwald, the creator of the 2019 Rosario Dawson crime drama Briarpatch (on which McClendon was a story editor), among a couple of other writers.

Dave Filoni, a protégé of Star Wars creator George Lucas who is involved in many of the shows, may have also been present.

After breaking the story, Lindelof and Britt-Gibson have been clacking away at the keyboards.

Sources say the movie project is intended as a stand-alone but in success could lead to more movies. That plan goes against the grain of earlier Lucasfilm development process’, which saw the company try to come up with new trilogies. Now, the studio seems to focus on stand-alones.

And sources say that the story would take place after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, although it would not be a continuation of the Skywalker saga. It could, however, feature some of the characters from the Star Wars trilogy made in the 2010s."

"As for when Lindelof’s film could drop, December 2025 is the earliest date Disney has carved out on its calendar for a Star Wars feature."

Brad Bird brought his rising live-action career to a screaming halt when he sided with the inept Lindelof and turned down VII to stick with Tomorrowland. It's unconscionable that Lindelof be the one now working with Lucasfilm.

I think a Star Wars director should have some clue what Star Wars is. She has no experience with block buster films. She might be overwhelmed like the Phil Lord and Chris Miller where and Lucasfilm had to bring in Ron Howard to salvage the mess.

Just let Bryce Dallas Howard direct the thing and skip over the firing of the director step that Lucasfillm does.

Screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson have exited this project.

“Lucasfilm’s top-secret Star Wars movie to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has lost its screenwriters, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, Deadline can confirm.

Details as to the film’s plot are still under wraps, though we understand that Obaid-Chinoy remains at the helm, with further details on the project to be unveiled at next month’s Star Wars Celebration. Sources suggest that the film is still in a solid position to be one of the first out of the gate for the franchise — if not the first — on the heels of 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Disney has, in the interim, prioritized building out the Star Wars universe on the TV side, with hit shows like The Mandalorian.“
