Selfie sticks - is this a thing at WDW yet? Disney clarifies policy

Just a note:

A lot of the news stations down here are reporting on this, however they are claiming they are banned park-wide (obviously not true....yet).

Just got back from a week there. Saw quite a few selfie sticks, including my own. I never saw anyone using one dangerously or hit anyone or anything like that though. I did see a few people get hit with scooters though, including my wife getting hit twice. No more scooters!!!

I hope by the time we return in September that there is a ban in place.

When were there in January it wasn't at epidemic proportions but more than a few times we would see people with them and comment 'if the park was at capacity I could see people getting really ticked really quick'.

Also, and this just my opinion, the people that use selfie sticks are idiots. Congrats on your purchase of an open air public photo booth, stick your tongue out, make the peace the sign, fake eat a piece of food... You all look like morons.

Well, I don't think I'm an "idiot" as the previous person posted, I am a mom of 2 children and I got one for the simple reason as to get a decent family photo without having to ask someone to do it for me. I am very responsible with it, would never use it on a ride or in queue for a ride, nor would I let my children do this. But I think they are not a horrible thing.

You are one in how many million people to go to WDW? Of course every person with a stick isn't using it like an idiot, but the few who do are the ones who will cause an incident. I'm not surprised at all that every single person using them was not waving them around like a weapon. However, you are just one person among thousands in the parks during your stay. Can you honestly sit here and tell us that no one else witnessed people doing stupid crap with these useless hunks of junk during your stay? No. You can't.

A friend of mine said that she saw people taking pic with a selfie stick while on the doom buggy. Yea, at least they did not use a flash.

Can't say none but in 2weeks I only saw 1person doing something dumb ( haunted mansion) but that was jumped on at the ride exit.

I would agree that you are not an idiot since you use yours responsibly. I think that those who flail them around are are idiots. However, I believe the other poster's negative comments were a generalization against those that use these things and not a concrete belief of everyone he sees with one. Then again, I could be wrong about him. :D

I will go so far as to say that (I feel) anyone using a selfie stick is ridiculous looking regardless of the reason. A family taking a photo with a stick looks silly enough when they could just simply ask anyone to take one, but I get it. The group may be shy, untrusting of others, etc. Fine. Use a selfie stick, responsibly. Then you have the people that are so caught up in social media Facebook, MySpace (yes, that still exists), Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+, Pintrest, Instagram, etc that they actually think people give two ***** about what they are eating every few minutes, or that they are "Super cute" with the duckface and peace sign. Those people are idiots.

I spent lunch with my wife at Texas Roadhouse last week and we were mesmerized by two girls texting and tweeting about their food every... 2 or 3... minutes. It was like a train wreck. You couldn't stop watching. Yes, they were throwing the peace signs, duck faces, serious librarian faces (they actually got out two pairs of black glasses for this), and various other signs that I can only assume were gang signs from their overly pompish, rich, white-girl gang. The ONLY thing that would have put this over the top would have been a selfie stick.

See? It isn't every one that has one, but those few are the real problem and the reason I hope Disney bans them.

AND, as for the "broken record" poster that keeps mentioning banning strollers and ECV's... fine. Ban them if they have become this big of a problem. But I challenge you to prove that the parents pushing the strollers or the ECV drivers are being careless far more than careless Selfie stick users. The strollers and ECV issues are two fold. One, the driver/pusher may run into someone because they are careless. Two, the person getting hit could be the careless one. I've never seen someone walk into a selfie stick and get hurt.

I agree with an on ride total ban but can't see it happening park wide.as for accidental stroller incidents over the years I have seen enough parents using them as "path clearing" devices.should they be banned as well , no but I do keep a look out so as not to get battered.

Wait. Someone is trying to compare strollers and ECVs to selfie sticks?

ECVs - as annoying as they may be - are medical devices. Legally covered by ADA. Gotta put up with them.

Strollers - as annoying as they may be - are the primary mode of transportation for the under five set. They're not going anywhere.

Two of these three things are modes of transportation while a selfie stick is not. This is beyond comparing apples and oranges. It's more like comparing an apple and pair of 1976 roller skates - simply inconceivable.

I'm right there with you. ;) But this is the person's argument each time he comments.

I am sorry, but I just don't get the whole selfie stick thing. In year's past. if I wanted a family group picture I would just kindly ask someone to take the picture with our phone or camera for us. In today's day and age of selfies and "let me get this posted on social media ASAP", we are becoming less social and more disconnected from each other. Next time we need a group photo, perhaps we could socially engage another human being and ask them to take the photo for us? What a concept!!!

Yes, this is a real thing. In the event you don't look head slapping ridiculous enough taking photos with an iPad, now you can do it with your selfie stick.

Second, I probably need to amend my initial statement:

Also, and this just my opinion, the people that use selfie sticks are idiots. Sure there is the extreme 1% outlier family that gosh-darn-it just wants a cute photo and is responsible and there is no possible way to obtain said photo without the use of a selfie stick. Congrats on your purchase of an open air public photo booth, stick your tongue out, make the peace the sign, fake eat a piece of food, walk around while recording yourself or only the area immediately in front of or behind you because we all know that people back home love to see shaking first person camera footage of things and I'm sure you'll lovingly look at the photos you and your tour group took... You still all look like morons.

Ban them, make sure the warnings are written in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, American, 'Murikan, Jersey-ese and Canadian (the Canadian version will also include no fewer than 3 apologies for the ban)

PS - Hopefully readers will understand the above satire on some level. Just remember it is the happiest place on earth people. If you don't think you can ask someone to take a photo of your family your nuts. For the flush with vacation cash there are photo pass photographers every 6 feet. Selfie sticks by their name alone evoke negative feelings because it allows the user to extend their personal space without regard for others. Not to mention the present disdain for the 'generation me' culture that smart phones and social media have created.
