Oh, I should add, though Girl Scouts seem shallow to me, while she is still a brownie, she is still with the program. She's about to become a Junior...

Fishing. I'm thinking about taking the kid Fishing (dockside) at age 8.

She asked me at 7 to do it, but I was nervous about hooks.

Thoughts?
My aunt taught me to fish when I was little. I learned to dig up my own worms, bait my hook, and "flip" my cane pole like a pro. I did, however, draw the line at touching a fish. I will not touch one to unhook them. I laid 'em on the dock, held them still with my foot, and carefully maneuvered the hook out of its lip. If I couldn't get it free without touching it I'd carry it to my aunt or uncle & make them do it. LOL! Fishing is a great activity! My hubby loves teaching our boys to drive his boat and bass fish. I know plenty if girls who can out-fish boys, too!

My DD has been fishing since she was about 4. We'd bait the hook for her. We use hot dogs, corn niblets or stale bread so she doesn't have to deal with worms. (Although she likes to play in the dirt with them. She just doesn't want to kill them.) Back then she was good at holding
the pole and reeling it in but would hold the fish out until we took it off the line. Now she's 7 and does it all herself. Lol. She worries about worms living but will try to catch a trout for dinner. Lol.

I'm wondering what they've got stocked in the lakes?

I know you can fish at Ft. Wilderness and at Port Orleans Riverside...but I'm wondering what's out there to catch?

I know Bay Lake has Bass, but I'm assuming bluegill? Hrm...

Anyhow, I think the kid should have fun with this, and pole rentals are reasonable at Disney, so I may give it a go!

There's bream/brim to catch off the docks. I doubt you'd get any catfish. There's definitely largemouth bass out on the lakes. My husband has been on several of the guided fishing tours offered. The guides are great and will help as much or as little as you want with the little ones. My guys used to swear fishing was like magic at Disney because they caught so much. Hubby pics the best days/time of day for fishing (by moon phases, weather, and Farmer's Almanac) plus I think the guides prob'ly know the lakes and the best spots.

Bad night again...chatted with the kid for a bit. She showed off her new "Monster High" bathroom, which I called Ed Hardy (her mom got a chuckle out of that)...we then spent about an hour watching Pinky and the Brain videos (yeah, I got her hooked on Animaniacs)...

It hurts being away, while she's growing up so fast.

The very most important thing is to do the right thing. Alot of times we have to take the high road. My ex and I separated 7 years ago. My son spent alot of time with his dad and his paternal grandparents. Which was fine because I knew one day I would get my turn. My friend would always say things like "how could you let him spend Christmas with his dad; you gave birth to him" and other ignorant stuff. You know what? Mother in law suddenly passed in 2009, sadly, my ex husband died in 2011, and my father in law died this past December. I'm glad my son got the time for memories with them; that's all he has. Now I'm all he has....and I'm making every moment count :)

A lot of people don't get this...but Disney is an investment for me. After leaving my ex, I needed something to hold our family together.

And, I fell back on my own childhood memories. We went alone in 2010, but in 2011 we took her then 10 year old Uncle (good god that boy can eat! He had a blast!) and her mother with us. But 2012 and 2013 are our own trips.

Something to remind the kid that, even though Mom and I didn't work out, we still love her, and she is special to both of us...

It's a common experience, and while we all on Disney forums enjoy griping about changes to "our park", it will not likely change all that much in the near future. My kid will be me, griping about different things, but loving the parks all the same as she takes her kids to them. Heck, last year she complained about them getting rid of Kim Possible...at 7, it's already started!

I've posted this elsewhere, but this really does sum it up...and yes, there is a REASON I take her to Disney.

We facetimed tonight, and she showed me a video of her presentation about Rosa Parks...

Need to work on her pacing and presentation (I was a speech/theatre major in college...but that aside)...I am quite proud. She's been rehearsing this for a few weeks. Were it me, I would have had her memorize the speech, but not worth forcing upon the ex. Though, I will suggest they run more of her school projects through me before presentation!

I miss her.

She told me tonight that she is excited that she had no homework, and that there's only two weeks left in school...which means she comes to see me (according to her). While not accurate (I won't be keeping her this whole summer, as I did last summer) it touched me that she wanted to come see me so badly.

It's coming my little darling, it's coming...<grin>

My two nieces loved fishing at that age. Give it a whirl....nothing to lose.

Stupid question but have you considered relocating to be closer to your daughter?

I wouldn't let the fact your daughter's mother doesn't like your ex stop you from working things out with the old gf, you can't let other people live your life for you. It sounds like you are a great dad and your daughter is a lucky girl to have you. My mother has never understood all the things we have done with the kids due to the money we've spent. I've told her we are building memories and we can't take the money with us, the memories will always remain. We do not live above our means, the kids have everything they need and most everything they want. I've taken them to CA to see Hollywood, DL, LA, Texas to see the Alamo, spent a lot of time in MO seeing Branson, Lake of the Ozarks, Devils Caverns, professional baseball games, professional football games several country music festivales, the mountains, the beach, the Grand Ole' Opry and we are planning a road trip up the east coast next summer to take them to historical sites and to NY, summer after will be a cruise to the Bahamas before the oldest graduates from college. The oldest spent a semester at an Ivy League university last year only to decide she just preferred to be home, yeah a lot of money there but at least she did get transferrable credits for it! Just keep in mind what a previous poster said,it's the quality of the time and the memories you are building. Take that girl fishing and take tons of pictures, she will cherish those pictures too!

I've looked at that several times. A few things stop it, but mostly it's work related. It would be difficult to replicate my position / salary in that area walking in.

Here, I have connections and a base of customers. There, I'd be starting from scratch again, though I'm sure I could pick up some referrals.

Getting closer! What are you more excited for....the cruise or WDW? There are so many really awesome DCL trip reports on these boards that you have to be going crazy about now...LOL. Is your daughter still unaware of the upcoming epic surprise(s)? Can't wait to hear all about it!

Just seeing her, really.

Though, yeah, pretty excited about the cruise. Something new.

And yes, she is still unaware. She thinks she is coming here to Atlanta to stay with me.

I love that you read bedtime stories! My mom used to before she remarried when I was 6. I forgot all about that until she started reading bedtime stories to my boys when they were toddlers. They came home from a visit to Nana's begging me to read to them. That's when I remembered. So, I read stories to my boys. Bet I have Green Eggs & Ham memorized! They loved the silly stories like the Froggy series and anything Robert Munsch. I always did different silly voices for the characters and got really animated. They'd giggle and beg "Again! Again!!!" Definitely read to your kiddo while she still enjoys it. Mine stay up later than me most nights now. LOL! They come to my room to kiss me goodnight but no bedtime stories. They have all their favorite books still that I read to them. I hope someday they'll read those books to their little ones and do all the fun, animated voices. ;)

That is totally sweet dude! (speaking in Crushese) :) We'll be in WDW at the same time so I'll say a prayer for both us to have nice weather. Got the countdown calendar going. :D

I've enjoyed my time...and it's coming to a close.

One more full day, and then a 3/4 day...and then another year until I see her again...
