Security?

Walt Disney World is a big place, but if you look around carefully, you may see a lack of uniformed personnel. So where are the guards?

Or are the rumors true that's there's a secret Disney task force monitoring WDW undercover from within the parks, cleverly named the DIA.

I believe there are a lot of undercover security people.

I read a lot of Disney books, articles, and web content so I don't remember where I saw this but the security department used to (and may still have) nicknames for its officers: I remember some called "foxes" who would dress like tourists and walk around in the shops to catch shoplifters.

Whatever article or book this was also said there are "secret" balconies and windows that security watches from...as well as lots of hidden cameras.

Security is all around you, but is rarely seen apparently.

Disney has something very similar around here too.

We have had a couple of experiences with security coming out from nowhere. For help not for trouble. Once my son got sick and 2 men came from nowhere to help (they had it cleaned up in seconds) and the other my wife saw a small snake at Blizzard Beach and the must have seen the distress on her face because 2 men came from nowhere and asked her what was wrong.

As much as disney is into technology I am sure they have some of the top of the line security cameras that are concealed in places you'd never think of. I know of two cameras in the MK that you can see if you look hard enough, but I believe those are for parade monitoring.

They are not as great as some think though when it comes to shoplifters cause I can't tell you over the years how many people ive seen take things and get away with it.

I was in front of Norway a few years back when a lady blacked out. She hit the ground, conked her head open, blood everywhere, and within 15 seconds of her falling there were medics and security everywhere that came out of the woodwork. They are there, they are watching, they ARE the DIA!

There may be security in the park, but the entrance is a joke. I have seen so many people walk right through without their bags getting searched. My husband doesn't usually carry anything, but he was carrying a bag for me the last time and simply walked through without thinking. No one stopped him. It's especially true when it is very crowded at MK when the ferry, monorail and buses happen to get there at the same time, and at Epcot when the tram and monorail get there at the same time. Also, they never check those big camp pants type pockets.
I was able to carry a camera and wallet in those pockets. No one asked to check my pockets. How easy would it be to carry something dangerous in those pockets. I've thought about this before, but it hasn't stopped me from going and having a great time.
But on the other hand, I've seen them make women take off their bags to be searched when they were fully accessible. This happened many times when hurricane Debby was their. Women had their bags under their ponchos to keep them dry. They would pull up the poncho and put the bag, still over their head, onto the table, but a couple of the guys made them take off the poncho and put the bag on the table. Seriously, the bags were fully open and could be moved and probed with no problem. Other checkers had no problem with the ladies leaving their bags over their heads as long as they could see in them. It was the luck of the draw.
I've also seen the guard flirting with a lady and telling her to go on through. He didn't even look in her bag. She just smiled and said thanks, and she and her friends thought it was funny she didn't get checked.
So, just how safe are we. I assume, like most of us, that people are here for good reasons, and we ignore these kinds of things. And, how safe are we anywhere? We can't let these kinds of things stop us from having fun, but we do need to be deligent. If you see anything suspicious, you need to report it.

As some may know my mother has been a Cm for 15 yrs, as most of you noted Disney is one of the safest places on the planet. Not only is there MANY plain clothes officers there are MANY MANY cameras inclueding the many stores on property. Disney actually tolerates a small percentage of shop lifting. If there is someone who is cleaning house they will pop out of no where as some said and escort you off property. They will take you to the airport and have your belongings sent if staying on property. You will also recieve the "lifetime ban". Disney also uses face recognition at the gates. This technology is used for major sporting events such as the Super Bowl. They want to know if a known Pedo. is on property. Also any terrorist etc. Disney can lose huge amounts of money if any major negative event ever happened on property. We really have no idea the extent of security but I will tell you that it is as exstensive as it could possibly be. A previous poster mentioned something about things being in someones pocket? Well I can give you a little story I was a part of to illustrate the level of Disney's security. My cousins husband was visiting MK one day. We cleared the turnstyles....walked about 50 ft or so and out of no where four men appeared. They asked him " please let us see the pocket knife you have in your right pocket" He pulled it out....they inspected it....told him he could not bring it into the park. He took it back to the car. For the life of us we couldnt figure out how they knew it was a pocketknife? They specifically said "pocketknife".

Disney security is trained to be non-confrontational....it is the happiest place on earth...right? but dont think for one second security is lacking in anyway. There are specialized teams etc. continually training, I can tell you that there are many more "undercover" security officers then uniformed. The uniformed officers are basically for visability and for the guest comfort. The real security is all around you. There is very little privacy when on property. If you think you are getting away with something....your not.....they are letting you do it.

I will say, that while the bag check and whole front gate security seems questionalble, they did "get" me once.

When I used to take a bag into the parks, I grabbed on my packs that I use for day hikes. I did not realize it had a cylinder of waterproof matches in an inside pocket. Disney security found it, but had no idea what it was.
