We are only sometimes asked to take things out of the bottom of our stroller. Usually it's if we've accidentally left a bag under there. I don't recall ever being asked to take everything out of that thing and thank goodness cause some days it feels like we've brought all our luggage with us! I do agree with those who have stated that the bag checking seems a little lax, most folks do just peek and say ok.

That is because the real security are the people looking you over as you stand in line for the bag check. They group us all together so they can check us out, and see if anyone looks a little off or extra antsy.
