Scooter accident

I have a question. Im not really brushed up on this...

What exactly is the problem with people having to medically prove they need the scooter? Return times are one thing but renting an item that is meant for people who are ACTUALLY physically impaired is another. I mean most of these people who need the scooters should have a handicap placard or at least some sort of medical documentation in their possession. Most places require documentation of disabilities So why is it such a controversy at disney?

Im not asking to be mean or harsh Im genuinely curious. And I work in a hospital and I know many people truly do have medical issues but I also know that many do not and take advantage.
Do you know how easy it is for some to get those placards ? I routinely see stories on the local news about their abuse.

To you scooter drivers who are defending your accidents, nobody is trying to say you shouldn't drive a scooter, but, defensive driving. If someone stops dead unexpectedly on Main Street, yeah that's annoying even when I'm a pedestrian, but you should be able to avoid hitting them if you were keeping a safe following distance. If you see people are too close and may step in front of you, then slow down until they move away. I understand in moving crowds this might not be possible because the crowd is going to flow around you and merge in right in front of you again. In that case you might just have to go at a snail's pace to be safe. Maybe Disney should rope off a scooter lane at high traffic areas / times. Of course people would probably then complain about more entitlements for scooter users.
If you are refering to my post, 1) I've never had an accident while riding my ECV.

2) I'm not defending or accusing anyone...accidents, unfortunately happen..

3) Just what would you like us to do wnen you are keeping a safe distance moving towards the castle and someone darts out in front of you, their face buried in their phone...you want me to stop, and wait for them to pass...then here comes another, and another, and so on...with that logic, I guess all of us handicapped people that spent the SAME amount of $$ as you to get in, should have a special place right by the train station where we can pass underneath and park and stay there to admire the castle from afar, while you guys can walk anywhere on property, bumping into the throngs of other people all walking.

C'mon, get serious ... I really, honestly hope you never devolop a medical contidion where you find yourself in need of an ECV...I do feel sorry for your lack of empathy.

It is against the Americans With Disabilities Act...It is against the law for ANYONE to inquire about your disability (or lack thereof)...

Some of the replies to this thread make me really wonder about some people. If you're like me (and my family) and have been blessed with good health and a strong body you should be thankful for that and perhaps have just a touch of empathy for those less fortunate instead of making rash judgments without all the facts. My 80+ YO Father In Law has severe joint issues and uses an ECV to get around. He doesn't "look disabled". He has be walked into at the parks a number of times by people who were too busy checking a mobile device or simply not watching where they were walking. There have been times where the person who walked into him started to engage him only to have second thoughts when they saw our family rally around "having his back". We're like Marie - we won't start anything but we will finish it.

Yes, he is careful but if you walk (cut) in front of him and simply stop - that's on you. If you are crossing or overtaking you don't have the right of way. As far as leaving a safe following distance - good luck with that. As soon as you back off someone will cut in front of you. Like I said earlier - there is a very small percentage of ECV users who operate them somewhat recklessly. If you are going to patronize crowded parks you need to maintain your situational awareness. Unless the ECV operator takes aim for you and intentionally rams you anyone hit probably bears some of the responsibility for the accident. I know a lot of guests forget to pack their patience when they come to WDW.

To the judgmental types I wish you a long and healthy life but always be mindful that Karma can be a b****.

I don't think its HIPAA.

It probably is the ADA. I just never knew how the DMV could require a doctors signature indicating a need to get a handicapped tag. If they can require if, why can't disney?

Because just like you don't need proof of handicap when you use an ECV at your local supermarket, Wal-Mart, etc., you don't need proof at Disney...If they required it, (but again, it's against the law to ask), I personally would have NO problem giving them that information, but they can't. Besides, where does Disney give you a handicapped tag?

The DMV requires it because you are operating a motor vehicle.

I am sure you are joking, but escalators, as they move, can rip the skin open on your hands and arms if you aren't careful, and could do even more damage at the top/bottom...

When I saw her put one of her hands on the escalator riser, I was thinking, "pick it up, pick it up before it's ripped off!" Glad she was okay. Scary to watch. And man, was she lucky that her stupidity didn't cost her.

There's a video of a person in a scooter driving into closed lift doors in a shopping mall. They're heading to a lift and the doors close before they get there. They're so mad they back up and head full speed into the closed doors, meanwhile the lift has traveled down more than a floor. Unfortunately for the person in the scooter the doors give way and break and the scooter with the person on it fall down the lift shaft and they end up being killed. It's a horrific scenario and I'm not linking the video for obvious reasons

Sad. And stupid. *shakes head*

Kinda surprised the elevator doors broke...thought they were sturdier than that. That must have been one Hummer of a scooter.

*shakes head again*

I was merely responding to the claim that no one can ask about your disability status. Clearly the DMV can (and do) when you get a HC hang tag. And they are some one. You can usually get one even if you don't drive so it can't just be about operating a motor vehicle.

I can only base my answer on the state in which I live...NJ, I've been told that the reason why the DMV in NJ requires a doctor's note is because they want to make sure your disability won't prevent you from operating your vehicle safely, and to prevent fraud. In my state, you can only get a handicapped tag (or HC plates obviously), if you have a drivers licence...and the serial number of the HC tag corrisponds to your licence plate. You also get a permit (looks just like a DL, for ID), so the police, or a parking attendant can verify that you are entitled to the permit and you are the person it was given to. Also, our mirror tags are good for 4-5 years...when it expires, you must provide the DMV with a new doctor's note to get it replaced. If you are parked in a HC spot, the PD can run the serial number on the tag and see if it comes back to the plates on your vehicle...if it doesn't, you can get a very expensive ticket.
