Saturday Night Live: Direct to Video Sequel Bashing

I don't know if i am putting this in the right spot, but did anyone watch Saturday night live tonight? (May 11th 2002)

If you did, did you happen to catch the little TV Funhouse segment where the made fun of all the direct to video sequels (DTVS) by making a "Bambi 2002" thing. Yeah, it was funny, and did all the DTVS some justice saying lines like, "This greatly underfunded film was rushed out to meet the summer 2002 rush! for your children to enjoy for the 48 hours that it's available" and about how the stories are concocted so horribly by showing bambis mom coming back to life. Yeah it was great. If anybody happened to tape it, and can put on the internet, please PM me or something. I would love that mainly because i oppose the DTVS and feel that they are a waste of money and animation effort that they can put into other films instead of the upcoming Lilo and Stitch which will probably be horrible. Oh, and just to make this kind of theme park related, is it just me, or does it seem like they purposely made Lilo and Stitch so they can have a replacement for Alien Encounter Since a lot of families wont go on that ride as it is right now?

I cant wait until Lilo and stich opens so you can see how wrong you are about the story being aimed at replacing Alien encounter.

I DO know the story (I worked on the film..briefly) and i can ASSURE you there is no way in hell that it would fit ANYWHERE in alien encounter...

I strongly agree with your sentiments. I can't stand the direct to video crap. It's a cheesy way to rip off parents by putting out an extremely inferior product. Kids don't know the difference but demand that their parents buy it. I can't believe they would take classic children's stories like Cinderella and have the audacity to right a sequal to it. You've got to be kidding! I feel the same way about Peter Pan II (although not dtv, it probably should have been)-this is doing a great disservice to classic writers like JM Barrie. I bought the Disney Trivia board game several years ago and it seemed like half the questions were about these horrible direct to video films in an obvious attempt to make parents go out and buy them. What a load of crap!

Am I missing something?

Never in a million years would I have thought Lilo & Stitch would in any way tie in with Alien Encounter. I wonder why so many people seem to think it will.

Anyway, I am really sorry I missed SNL! I'll never forget the day my brother came home with Return of Jafar...BOUGHT, not rented...I thought, Have I taught you NOTHING???

Okay, sorry. To me, the whole alien breaking loose thing seemed just a bit familiar and i remember hearing i think here on WDWMagic that they might change the ride to fit it. Also, I don't know the WHOLE storyline, just a brief summary.

Oh, and I forgot about that Jared from Subway thing. That was Great! I especially liked how they brought back Bambi's mom and she was in the little neck brace, and when Bambi dodged the bullets Matrix style. It was too good. If anybody has this on tape, PLEASE POST IT!

I don't much care for the DTVS's either. Most of the theater sequels don't look that good either! (*cough* Peter Pan)

However, I think Lilo & Stitch is going to be awesome. Have you seen the "Inter-Stitch-als" on the official site? Hilarious stuff.

Correct me if I am wrong. But, didn't Walt Disney hate sequels ? He probably would have hated DTVS also.

As far as I know of Disney's intentions, you are correct. Walt never wanted to produce sequels to any of the animated pieces his studio created. But, since his death and Disney Co. seeing the classics as "cash cows", they will try to find ways of making even more money on them. A little depressing, isn't it...

I could be wrong... but a few years back, when i worked at a Disney Store in Chicago (I'm in Florida now) I heard that there was a Peter Pan being done DTVS. Was the Return to Neverland supposed to be DTVS, or was it always supposed to be a crappy theatrical release?

Hey,
Let's not forget the Toy Story 2 was pretty good...

Is PIXAR going to re-up with Disney after the 5 are done? Or are they still pretty ed that TS2 wasn't considered one of the 5?

CHEAP QUELS

There's nothing wrong with well done sequels...
like Fantasia 2000, Toy Story 2 etc......
But when the company produces low quality animation coupled with idiotic stories and passes them off as Great pieces of entertainment produced at a fraction of the cost of the original....
they should be called "CHEAPQUELS' cause that's exactly what they are!
