We've had several meals there in the past few years, and are never disappointed.

To each his own...but I hope it re-opens

I havent eaten there in a couple years but the past few times I have, it didnt disappoint. Maybe it has gone downhill since, and someone mentioned a menu change so now Im wondering if I should remove it from my "favorite restaurant" choice since I cant really judge it! At any rate, its got my vote for best atmosphere in WS.

I have no problem with the food  I usually eat there each trip and enjoy it.

I have no problem with the food either when I pay $7.99 for it at any other Mexican restaurant. But for at least twice the price I expect more and that's why it has moved way down on my list. If I'm gonna pay that much I want it to be memorable and my local El Rodeo does it better imo.

To kind of recap an earlier thread, the rumors of the multi-part Mexico pavilion refurb were that the outside Cantina would be torn down and replaced with a Full Service restaurant. Inside, the existing San Angel Inn would become more of a Signature Dining location, and an adjacent tequilla and fajita bar would open in the space where the jewelry shop is now on the right-hand side of the pavilion. The fajita and tequilla bar would by run by the restaurant, and presumably would share its kitchen.

There were forms filed last month for the rennovation/installation of the jewelry shop's new location on the left-hand side of the pavilion. So my guess is that this upcoming San Angel Inn closure will be more kitchen-related than Guest-area related. They'll probably rennovate the kitchen and get the new fajita place ready and open so that there will still be a Counter Service location in Mexico when they proceed with tearing down the outdoor Cantina. After the new Table Service restaurant is built, I'd expect the current San Angel Inn to close again for further changes into its Signature Restaurant incarnation.

I don't remember well, but was there an edition of the ride before? I mean without the 3 Cabs?

Just wondering, sorry if this is off topic

Yes there was. The ride has been changed slightly during refurbs over the years, but the latest 3 Cabs change has been the most significant. The ride has been operational since the pavillion opened with Epcot.

Let's hope with the reopening of the restaurant that the menu makes some changes. Even over the past few years some of the more tasty items have been removed from the menu. I would assume for cost savings associated with free dining.

Viva Tequila Bar!! :lookaroun

We have meals there that were great and some that were pathetic. Hopefully whatever they do helps make the meals more consistantly enjoyable. It really is a nice place to enjoy a meal.

We LOVE the SAI, and eat there every trip. The food is wonderful (although less spicy to cater to the general taste) and I have been told by those who have visited the old section of Mexico City that is it truly authentic. The stuff you get in the chain mexican restaurants in the US is something that was made up in the US, and is not really mexican at all. ESPECIALLY tex-mex. We have a mexican community where I live, and I can tell you that the food they have at their family celebrations is NOTHING like El Rodeo, Taco Bell, Tijuana Flats, etc. It's not like cali-mex, either.

If it is not your taste, fine, but don't knock it because it doesn't taste like your favorite fast-food mexican chain restaurant - that's just a joke.

I think the trouble is a lot of people go there with a pre-conceived idea that THEY know what good mexican food is like, and when they are surprised to find that real mexican food is nothing like what they are used to, they pan the restaurant, instead of simply saying that they don't like it, or that it is not to their taste.

I have always had excellent service there. The prices are high, but then again coming form the NYC metro area, not that high in comparison to NYC. Also, all the TS in WDW is overpriced.

Probably the most disappointing quick service in EPCOT. I really hope the change up the menu/add some spice to their food. It's just too bland.

The worst quick-service by far, is the China pavillion. That food, the bill-boards showing it, and the eating area are all nasty, dated and just plain vile.

Didn't they just refurb it a year or two ago? It was nice and clean when I stopped in to snack on some egg rolls last year.

I couldn't possibly agree more! Every time they changed the menu, the offerings went down. Less choices, higher prices, less imaginative foods. Yes, the stuff has a very "lite/airy" feeling to it now. But so many things were replaced, I almost can't eat there any more even in desperation. (Of course, I could add that I can't stand cilantro, and they use it there, but that's another issue.)

The same thing happened to China that happened in Mexico. If you go back ten years ago (or more), they had great food! (Though the fried rice was always unpleasant.) Then over time they started removing/replacing choices with lesser quality, or smaller, or less imaginative offerings. This is another restaurant where if they downgrade the offerings one more time, I won't be returning. (The Chinese restaurant does still offer really good hot and sour soup, it's one big saving grace. Hopefully my mentioning this won't suggest to them that they replace this now.)

I realize Disney has high overhead. I realize they feel they have you captive. But I don't want to go into a restaurant and be served Taco Bell level food but be charged like I'm eating at Gibson's!

I so agree with you. We finally gave up on this place. The last meal we had there was the equivalent of a tasteless Mexican TV dinner.
When I saw the title of this thread I was hoping that someone else was taking over this restaurant. While the atmosphere is outstanding, the food, and service are horrendous.

I thought and feel the same way. The food was Terrbible when we went in Sept. I have no plans to go back.

I do like El Rodeo but I have also been to Mexico four times and have had MANY authentic meals to compare, and SAI just always falls flat for me. Yes I do expect to pay more for a TS meal in WDW, and I don't mind when the food is good and memorable i.e. Le Cellier. Unfortunately I can no longer justify spending the $ on SAI - we now go to the cantina. I'm hopeful the changes will be great because the atmosphere is fantastic.

Maybe they will add a tortilla maker in the kitchen and finally get rid of the store bought Tostitos. :hammer:

Amen! It is ridiculous that a restaurant that claims to be authentic Mexican food serves tostitos and cheap jarred "picante" sauce rather than salsa. And don't even get me started on their margaritas.

In my opinion, San Angel Inn is the Olive Garden of Mexican food. That does not mean people will not enjoy a meal there...obviously there are people who like it. But even though the menu items may resemble true mexican food, the quality just is not there. Authentic mexican food is very time consuming to prepare and requires fresh ingriedients. Due to the mass prodution of food San Angel Inn has to make to keep up with the high turnover, it is imposible to achieve an authentic mexican meal there.

Trust me...if you ever get the chance to eat at an authentic Mexican food restaurant....regardless of the region of Mexico it comes from (and no, I am NOT talking about Tex-Mex or any other hybrid Mexican food), you will see what I am talking about.

Another good example to illustrate my point....eat a store bought tortilla, and then eat one freshly made from scratch. It is like you are eating two different products entirely....the taste does not even resemble each other. That is how the food at San Angel Inn is compared to what you would get at a Mexican restaurant that does it right.
