Death to the 80's EPCOT! :sohappy:

I have to agree. Epcot is supposed to be changing with the future, and a late 70s color scheme mural just doesn't feel like Future World. Before anyone freaks out, consider the cleaning the mural got with the Land pavilion's refurb. The brook in front is new, too.

I'm happy about the majority of changes coming to Epcot lately. About the only serious missteps have been the Imagination pavilion refurb, which is a joke, and the longevity of the Wand, which has taken a fantastic piece of postmodern art and reduced it to Vegas-style cheese.

What I am worried about...

That some not-so-bright in WDI honstly thinks it's acceptable to cover a mural by placing panels of printed material over it on a frame, mostly just obscuring the object while destroying it from the mounting points too.

This happened in DL's tomorrowland and i'm very concerned they might try it here too. I am reserving judgement until i see the finished product, but I am really hoping no one thinks that printed panel crap is "progress."

Let's hope that they learned their lesson with the DL Tomorrowland ugliness. Like I said, look at how beautiful the Land's refurbished mural is.

What I'd really like to see return to Epcot is a new set of circular logos for the pavilions. From a graphic design perspective, the original logos were very sleek, clean, and professional. The new typography-based logos for the Land, Soarin', and the Living Seas looks like anyone could have done it with desktop greeting card software. At least Epcot's recent logo (with the globe for the "O") looks nice.

Wait, the Land got a new mural in its last refurb? Where? The one out front has been there forever (and it should stay that way:fork:).

I am not saying to panic, as I know no more than anyone, but keep in mind that a new attraction is being built just inside the doors, all attractions need wait time signs, as well as titles and misc. information boards.

Panic? That's the WDWMagic way.

Everything is horrible and the worst thing Disney has ever done until it's done and then all those naysayers kind of just drift away.
Really? I thought everest was good. When I found out the MS thing didn't subtract form existing centrifuges, I was still disappointed Disney would be so weak kneed but it wasn't a tragedy. Maybe you should try and add something constructive as opposed as hiding behind the wide brush you paint alot of forum members.......

Brain fart. It was thoroughly cleaned; it's not new. Sorry. :hammer:

(Reminds self not to post when halfway asleep.)

However, the little brook in front the pavilion is new.

I'm going to go back and edit that post.

I think besides covering it with ugly and stupid panels, my second fear is that they took the sun out for a FP return sign. Now that i think is worth being ed off over, but I am hoping it's not that.

The ones lower down, in the center, they seem to be a large marquee with sub-title text, as they're a big rectangle over a little one - the others jsut don't seen to make sense.

The only characters i can see them adding are Crush, Sprite, and Mr. Ray and possibly other various turtles. The artwork from the Turtle Twister ride at DLP's Studios does suggest they'd go that way, making the mural into the EAC (East Australian Current) with Turtles along the length - but that, i dunno, doesn't seem to fit a ride about Nemo.

Why not the other characters? Because they're situated just a few feet away at the photo spot, and I don't see Disney tearing it down when they reopen the ride.

Dory came back in the last week, so perhaps they were fabricating new characters *shrug*

They might put something good in, but the squares to me says mounting posts for signage or for an overlayed tarp thingy (feh!) I wont hate what they put in out of spite or because i didn't want it to change, i'll judge it on its own merits. I am really sad to see the pieces cut up and knocked-away though.

I am suprised I'm one of the few who liked the mural and saw nothing outdated or 80's about it. I felt it was just a very unique and artistic interpetation. In short, I liked it and found it aesthetically pleasing. Whoever designed it, i really respect, and i feel bad for them. It's a piece that is complex and took a lot of work. It's not just painted on, but the layers and levels took lots of planning. This was before we had CAD to make life easy and quick.

Nemo can really bring life to the Seas. Mr. ray singing about Manatees inside the pavilion today made me smile. I just hope they have a really good reason for what they're doing.

I have to say I never liked it in the first place; I wouldn't be heartbroken if it was replaced with something a bit more timeless and not abstractly classic that really looked dated at this point.

Thank you very much, that is EXACTLY what I was thinking as I was looking at your pictures, merf.

Anyone remember the beautiful Mary Blair mural in DL's TL?

Those holes in the Living Seas' mural look perfect for mounting another mural or whatnot right on top of it...

But I do remain semi-optimistic. :D

Beautiful....not so much. To me, anyway. They didn't fit with the theme of Tomorrowland at all, IMHO.
I like the new ones much better.:D

what would be cool is if disney had a place, like a museum of sorts, where retired rides, attraction signs, etc. could go... im sure the idea of a museum type place has come up on the boards before, it could be pretty cool i think

Hmmm.....The 5th gate!....Nostalgia Kingdom!

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF TOMORROW!!!!

Sorry, Couldn't resist. Seriously, the mural screams 80s, as did the whole Living Seas. The place has needed an update, and a real attraction inside it, for years now, and I'm thrilled that things are happening. I'll trade the mural for the ride any day. Everybody has complained for years that everything is being replaced with things that aren't family friendly, and now I'm seeing complaints that they're putting in a family friendly ride, and losing a mural? Come on people... Pick your battles better than that.

I completely agree. Like I said before, and like you said, the mural is definetely out of date and needs an update. If anything, we shouldn't be paniking, but CELEBRATING a new look for The Living Seas. Really, as it was, it wasn't quite as popular as the other future world areas. I went to Disney World many many many times, and never set FOOT into The Living Seas because it had nothing worthwhile sticking out about it. There wasn't anything really exciting in there, and now they have Turtle Talk, the new Finding Nemo Ride this Fall, and they've added Bruce and the other Sharks and really interesting information about sea creatures. If anything, Finding Nemo helped out the entire area SO much. They could really do some incredible things and theme it around something Disney Related, and I like that. As of now, The Living Seas is ATTRACTIVE on the inside, and I'm pretty sure they only want to reflect that on the outside.

BLASPHEMY!!! :)

When they came for the wall carpet... I said nothing
When they came for the handwiches... I did not speak out
When they came for the murals... there was no one left to speak out

Exactly! If anything, they'll add something more attention-getting. I completely forgot about the Living Seas on the last trip:hammer:

I'd help if they opened up the 'northwestern passage' around the back of communicore... the way the layout is now makes it very easy to overlook the Seas...

If they were removing it completely, they wouldn't just be poking holes in it.

Relax. It'll be okay. DEEP BREATHS. DEEEEEEEEEP Breaths.

I thought that too... At the very least, they're covering it up and not tearing it out. They're usually pretty brutal when they just want to be rid of something.

I dug the mural too; for some reason I didn't think it was 'dated' at all. There are plenty of other things around that are 'dated', of course... I just didn't think the mural was one of them.

Nevertheless... does anyone know if there will be further painting inside the pavilion? I was there last month and they had painted *everything* the same shade of dark blue. It was just odd to see the place completely monotone, especially as all the old Seabase Alpha detailing was still in place but all just the same color.

Blue fits the Seas, of course, but I was wondering if maybe they'd fancy it up a little before official opening? It just seemed as if it had been a rush job.
