Rumor no more(well...kinda) WAND COMING DOWN!!

I guess I am not the only one who kind of saw Sherry's comment as demeaning to Spanish speakers. There are people who do their research and there are people who don't. Language has little to do with it. There are many many Spanish resources on WDW. Many people choose to be ignorant. This has nothing to do with their native language. I have to help native English speakers all the time with the most basic issues. It's not a problem, just part of my job.

But I know that Sherry's comment had no intention to be demeaning. So I hold nothing against it or anything like that. Easily getting offended is also due to lack of tolerance.
Demeaning to every foreigner. Because she basically implied that foreigners NEED that huuuge sign to figure out where they are

My family (who are mainly Spanish speakers) aren't idiots....they know they're in the golf ball park duh! :hammer:

why would something like Epcot need to be dumbed down for foreigners? It's not a real word. Epcot should be just as meaningful to a Chinese person as it is to me. I could better understand this confusion at Animal Kingdom and the Resorts, which is likely one reason Eisner made it so every Resort Hotel and, indeed, every park built after he became CEO, had the word "Disney" in the title. No confusion now! Disney's Epcot would sound dumb, though--so we get a Mickey arm coming out of the ground in front of a cemetery...kinda macabre, really.

Should do like the Mark IV Coral and Lime. Sell it to a Vegas casino. Better yet, sell it to Trump's casino in Atlantic City. Instead of the Mickey hand, have his hair. In place of the wand is his flattened hand with Epcot replaced with "You're Fired." This would be the best thing to ever happen to the Taj.

If they attach it top portion to a crane and cut it in half or into more pieces, it should not take long. Given they should know how much the thing weighs they could figure out where to make the cuts to get the thing down quickly.

It would come down in pieces but many, many more than (2) of them. It would basically be taken apart like it was built. The dangers of trying to support the section over SSE with a crane and then cut it into a few sections are way too numerous to mention them all, therefore I will just say no - it is not possible to safely remove the wand as is by cuttiing it into (2) pieces.

OHSA would have a field day with the GC on this one if they tried that.

All of Epcot would have to be closed.

Multiple cranes would be required to even attempt to balance a load of that size.

Numerous buildings may have to be razed to allow room for said cranes.

One slightest mistake and people WOULD be seriously injured or killed.

Believe me, It's part of my job to keep construction sites safe.

Don't believe it, did you ever see a large crane collapse?

Imagine that at Epcot, and then ask yourself again why it can't be SAFELY removed in 2 pieces...

Ok Ok I realize that the size of the thing would require it to come down in more than 2 pieces. My point was that, unless they want to reuse it, they could actually take it down pretty quickly. When they originally built it they also had to run wire, affix stars and lights, etc. The tear down would only involve cutting the electric cables and unbolting large sections but small enough for a crane to handle.

Yeah, you are real sarcastic and funny but you also speak English (I suppose) and don't use the "Epcot" to find out where Epcot is or that there even IS an Epcot. Try to be tolerant to the diversity of people in this world who might need a little more direction than you when in a foreign country.

Sherry

Aren't there signs at the entrances, on the exit ramps from the main roads, on the front of the busses that all say "EPCOT"? How could anyone who speaks any language, English, Spanish or whatever, get to a park at WDW and enter the park and not have any idea what park they were in? You don't need a sign on top of spaceship earth to tell you that. And Vern was making a joke, not a racist joke, but a joke about some of the icons that are not popular with all of us on these boards.

I'm sorry Sherry, if i offended you. I was making a joke about people i have talked to in the parks saying: "I went to Universal yesterday and rode the Tower of Terror" or " We went to Epcot yesterday but Disney World is so much better" (most of those were in a British dialect). Some people don't know where they are! Those of us fortunate to go a couple times in our lifetime, or year, and have access to the internet, and know better. I was not trying to put anyone down, just some observations I've seen at the parks.
Kind of like the question at the MK: What time does the 3:00 parade start.
Once again, I'm sorry if you took offence at my remark.

Ahhh... Sometimes I get caried away, but hey - many people seem to think the wand would be an easy thing to remove. While it would not be incredibly difficult, it would not be easy at all. Though you are correct, it would come down quicker and "easier" than it went up.

According to Disney, Epcot is now a word and it officially stands for nothing. That's how it's written on all the official material you'll find these days.

Actually, Disney goes out of its way to make sure that Guests know what the acronym originally meant. It's mentioned on the monorail spiels, the Magical Express busses, and in most Epcot literature.

And no one has decided that Epcot "officially stands for nothing."
