RnR a bad idea for my first "real" coaster?

After the first 10 seconds, the remainder of the ride isn't any more intense than Space Mountain. It's actually smoother, which for many guests means more enjoyable, and lacks any sudden "drops" that can create that tense stomach feeling. If you want to see what the track actually looks like, here's an outdoor clone:

The Hulk is way more intense than RnRC or EE, it's not close. The Hulk is a "full" rollercoaster, RnRC and EE are more "three quarters" rollercoasters, a step above Big Thunder Mountain or Space Mountain but not at the level of the Hulk. Fundamentally, WDW doesn't have a full-blown "adult" rollercoaster.

Given the choice between RnRC and EE, I'd pick RnRC. Yes, it has a couple of inversions but the ride is in the dark so you don't notice them or the heights. EE has a steep drop, rides backwards at one point, and is more bumpy than RnRC. It sounds like you strongly dislike rollercoasters so I'm not suggesting you should do either. But given the choice, I think RnRC is the less intense of the two.

Not old, just vintage.
I guess I am in the minority here. I adore roller coasters, have been on pretty much every style of coaster, and will try just about anything once. However, I refuse to get on RnRC anymore. I thoroughly enjoyed riding it for the first 10 years of its existence. It eventually got so rough that riding it now makes me very dizzy, lightheaded, and a little barfy. I took a few years off of riding it in hopes that it would get a refurb and get smoother again. Unfortunately when I tried to ride it again earlier this year it was still very rough and I had the same dizzy/passing out feeling from my head bashing against the restraints repeatedly.

I hate to give this coaster a negative review (it really is well executed and awesome concept) but I think it would be a poor choice for a first timer on a "real" coaster. I'm afraid that if a first timer experienced the rough ride they could end up with a negative view of coasters and be turned off to coasters indefinitely. I feel that there are better choices for a first timer in the Orlando area.

Here's a tip: Even if you're scared, Don't close your eyes.
Doing that will make everything more confusing and seem more violent.
Also, try and sit towards the middle of the train.

Forget Hulk, it is one of the biggest letdown coasters that the east coast has. B&M NEVER should have attempted to play with their tolerances to accomodate a third party part launch system. Completely screwed up what could have been a great ride. Thank the heavens Dragon Challenge still exists there.

Not sure I agree with that.
Hulk is definitely the most intense coaster in Orlando, but that's part of its appeal. I don't know of any coaster in existence that throws you through a cobra roll at such speeds. It may not be smooth, but it's the only non-diving machine B&M coaster in Florida with real "teeth," if you know what I mean.

If you can handle the take off of RnR, you will be fine. The first time I rode it we were through the loops before I got over the initial take off. Besides going upside down is no big deal anyway. It's not the scare/thrill you would expect.

The momentum of the coaster really pushes you back into your seat, so that's the main "sensation" that you feel. You don't really feel like you're upside down. For example, you don't feel that uncomfortable weight on your shoulders like you do in CyberSpace Mountain, or Sum of All Thrills. The physics of it is pretty amazing.

Another vote for RnR...I think one of the best parts about it for first-times is that you can't actually see it (the track) when you're waiting. Maybe that will make you less anxious. Also, as PP have said, it's a short ride (90 seconds) and the initial blast at the beginning is really the "scariest" part. Good luck!

Much thanks to everyone for your information and suggestions. We're in town this weekend for my daughter's soccer tournament, and my ex-wife has my daughter for the weekend, so I rode RnR today. It was AWESOME!!! :)

The launch was longer than I expected. I thought you go into the loop sooner. I thought I kept my eyes open during the launch, but the photo showed otherwise. :) I saw most of the track and the colorful highway signs throughout the ride, but I think I closed my eyes a few other times.

The ride did feel very smooth. I was in the single rider line, and I asked the cast member to put me in the middle of the car (I was in row 7). I felt the loop after the launch and the barrel roll near the end, but I don't recall a second loop...is there a second one?

I think the darkness helped (not seeing the whole track), and the fact that there are no big drops was very nice, but what really helped me on the ride was the music...I like Aerosmith, and the loud volume kind of overloads your senses to take some of the edge off the speed and turns.

Can't wait to ride it with my daughter tomorrow! Thanks again for all your help.

I am not a fan of coasters. I don't do them well, but I have no problem with RnRC. I never go on Tower of Terror or Splash Mountain - it's drops that scare me. I would NEVER go on the Hulk or anything that resembles it. But I don't mind RnRC because it has a few things going for it - it's in the dark, it's quick, you can't see what's coming until it's almost over, and the awesome Aerosmith music to totally take your mind off what is happening (if needed.)
One thing to be prepared for is the queue. When you are watching train after train, uh, limo after limo launch and disappear you are going to want to get out of the line. Don't. The countdown right before launch helps as well - it isn't a surprise when it takes off.
So here's what I do - fight the urge to get out of line, count down with the countdown and sing along with the music. As soon as you realize you're on a roller coaster, it's over and you will want to go again.

I like to reassure people by saying that since they were able to handle the plane taking off to get to Orlando, they can handle RnRC. Except this time you are strapped to the outside of the plane. It doesn't usually help.

I KNOW it's supposed to be Superman....

But with the red and blue color scheme....and the fact that we are talking about Aerosmith....

I just have to post this.

I am a huge roller coaster fan now, but wasn't always. The thing I always hated about coasters was the drops and having that stomach dropping feeling during them (even the drop in Pirates would get to me...). I road The Mind Eraser (I think it might be called something else now) in Six Flags in Springfield, MA, and ever since then I have LOVED coasters! After that I was brave enough to try RnR, knowing it had the same type of restraints and, similarly, no drops. It was even better and now I can't get enough!
It's funny that people are saying you don't know you go upside down because that happened to me and my cousin! We were talking to a photopass photographer outside of the ride and he started talking about the loops and we were like "THERE'S MORE THAN ONE!?" and, mind you, we had just rode it about 5 times. So we rode it immediately after and, sure enough, there was more than one!

OMG- add the Spiderman song to RnRC!:D Make it a Spiderman coaster and keep the Aerosmith feel of it w/ this song! Couldn't Disney do something like that since they "own" Marvel now?:)
I'm glad you liked RNRC! Now it's time to conquer EVEREST!:D

I read through some of the "RnR or EE" post, but I have a different twist on the question? I'm not a big coaster fan, but I want to show my daughter (12) that's it's possible to overcome your fears. She loves Thunder Mountain, and I've ridden it with her and I don't enjoy it. I do enjoy Splash Mountain, mostly because the big drop is thrilling and it's over in a second or two. We both rode Space Mountain last month...she enjoyed it and I enjoyed it a little bit, but I was quite anxious in the queue. We're both too scared (so far) to try Everest.

Neither of us has ever been upside down on a coaster...that scares me a lot. It's what scares me about RnR. It's scared me every since I wimped out on the Super Loop at the county fair back in middle school. We've stood under The Hulk at Universal and we can't believe people ride that kind of thing. :)

How does RnR compare to The Hulk? I've been told RnR has zero drops, but the thrill is in the speed and the two loops and the barrell roll (two of those too?)? Is it as tall/high as the Hulk?

Am I asking for trouble if I ride RnR as my first "real" coaster?

The launch sounds and looks awesome! We walked through the single rider queue with her friend so she could ride it, and we watched several launches. And you launch right into the first loop, right? Sounds so cool and thrilling but also very scary...I just threw up a little bit. :)

Thanks!

RnRC was my first "real" coaster about 3 years ago. I was nearly in tears as I boarded it, but I loved it. I hate the drops of E:E which I tried on a later trip, but I had no problem with the inversions on RnRC. They are more like quick corkscrews than the loop-de-loop drops I can clearly see on Hulk (and woudl NEVER try!). It is not high at all, just fast. After trying, and liking, Big Thunder, RnRC was a good next step for me, and I would recommend it.
