Yeah, went with(at the time future inlaws), was my first vacation ever(I was 30 at the time) and first time to Disneyworld. going back in about a month(just me and wife this time). I was there for 2 weeks, not sure how people could say it was open at that time, since I was right near it, it didnt even have water in it(except the part that is right near the lake). no matter what day there was no one there. heard all different reasons why it was closed(all repeated here), but again they said it was closed for a while. I liked the peacocks at fort wilderness, we stood in a cool camper(36 ft I think, that same camper(my inlaws) now sits in my back yard, its like a house of its own). :)

It was pretty good. Only problem was the water's quality. Especially when you get next to the lake. That part needed to be filtered better.

But it was great because of the small lines and the lack of climbing needed. There were also several neat slides. Like the one where you start going down and it just ends where you end up pluging 10-15 feet into the water.

I loved that slide that drops you into the pool, now that part of River Country obviously had no problem with that water cause it was chlorinated. In fact I realliked it cause in 1999 I came in 2nd in a cannonball contest they were having. Thats what made river country different cause of all the fun activites they had going on around the pool, definatly not something you could do at TL or BB.

While Disney would like you to think it's the condition of the water, you have to really think and see that it has an even bigger part in costs of running Water Country vs. money coming in. It definetly seems to be both of the problems (water / $$$) that will prevent it from ever opening again.

The question still remains though...what to do with the space? :veryconfu
nothing...there is no shortage of space at wdw and they will never build anything big back there, because it is so out of the way (a factor that led to River Country's demise). No replacement = no demolition. So, it'll sit...I think if Disney were going to convert that into a pool area for Fort Wilderness, it would have already happened.

I do not think this had anything to do with it, River Country was open for 25 years.

Its a shame...I really liked River Country.... :(

So what...it just sits there, abandoned? Or is it used for anything right now?

AnydP,

DCA and AK are always knocked for low attendance, yet they are all in the top ten. It's a known fact that IOA is not making the company $$$. They faile dto promote it properly and alot of people who visit Universal don't even know it exists(believe it or not).

Thrill parks are somethnig that needs to be regional. Even Six Flags failed miserably doing this. Families are not going to travel in droves to visits parks their kids can't go on.

Also, with nothing on the horizon for IOA to be built and the apparent lack of space, they do face some troubling issues.

I enjoyed the times I've went to IOA, but it's not something I need to do very often.

It sits there abandoned right now, the ticket gate sales area is boarded off with construction walls. I have recent pictures but not sure where they are right now.

As a castmember who worked in the area the summer of 2001, I can tell you for sure it was open 4 days a week through Labor Day. It was on its way out that summer and the drop in tourism post 9/11 served as a finishing blow. Since that point in time they have been investing additional money in Blizzard and Typhoon to up the capacity and comfort levels of the guest. Also in the works are new attractions for Typhoon although no timeline has been published as of yet.

Last thing I heard, RC was to be replaced with cabins. But that was from a CM at least a year ago.

If anything were to replace RC, I would like to see another shopping/entertainment district themed to the Wilderness connecting Fort Wilderness and the Wilderness Lodge.

In fact, one of my favorite things was hanging out in the little store and eating Pizza in Crockett's Tavern.

I just wanted to make a rare appearance on here referring to the gator problem... hehehe. While working at AK last spring I encountered an alligator in the wild right next to the gate where the parade leaves and returns. I was filling up cups of water for the performers and drivers. Pretty funny experience because I had never encountered an alligator that close in the wild (I'm from WV). They caught him and put him in the back of a truck and I have no clue where the alligator's journey ended.

I used to see gators everyday when I worked in the Magic Kingdom by Splash Mountain. I wouldn't consider them a problem, they don't seem to do much and they don't go after humans unless provoked.

I was really sad to see River Country close. I was never able to visit, but it looked like so much fun. My family was never interested in the water parks and now that I go by myself it's closed. I (being from Ky) like swimming in lakes and stuff and River Country was unique for that reason. Plus it was America's first themed water park. I know the water wasn't really clean, but the amoeba infections seem rare. According to the articles posted earlier, they are very rare (like 1 every 20 years or something). For 25 years River Country opperated and had no problems (at least I don't think so). But I guess this way there are guaruntees that no one will get sick.
