Ridemakerz (Virgin store - 1st floor)

To be fair, comparing stores closing in malls to the possibility of this store doesn't really work. For the most part - minus malls like Mall of America and such - malls are in bad shape. You can walk through most any mall nowadays and find more than a handful of closed stores that weren't closed five or maybe even two years ago. To hear that a remote control car shop closed in a mall is not exactly shocking, when stores like the Gap are closing stores in a bunch of malls and usual mall-based stores like KB Toys are totally gone. It's not a good time to be in a mall.

Besides that, traffic at DTD is way different than a mall. Again, excluding tourist attractions like the Mall of America, most malls see the same radius of shoppers - locals and those who live within maybe an hour and a half. DTD sees people from different places on a daily basis. Sure, you have the locals, but you also have everybody from me in Georgia to people on the other side of the world who make sure to visit every time we're there. And when you're on vacation, you tend to bring money for gifts, stuff for you, stuff for your kids, whatever you find you want. When I visit the local mall, I tend to go because either A) I'm bored or B) I need something specific from a store in that mall.

That said, I'm glad this will be in DTD. While not something that appeals to me, I can definitely see it working out. I'm glad to see SOMETHING in the Virgin spot, because frankly there hasn't been much to pull me down that way in a while. It'll at least get a look from me. Boys - and grown-up boys - will probably flock to this. Throw in a Cars exclusive or two - sure, even try for a Princess or Tink-themed shell for a car - and it shouldn't do too bad. I'm sure they could do well with a model after RC from Toy Story during this upcoming Toy Story-filled summer. And there is a chance for repeat customers - why not come back for something to spice up your car, or upgrade completely to a new one?

Why not? Your alternative: another store selling a lot of the same merchandise you can get in the World of Disney. At least, for now, something is in this spot. This time, it's not a dress exhibit... it's something that people might pay for more than once.

We can complain and moan about DTD being a shell of its former self all we want... but hey, at least SOMETHING is going in it. Would you rather the store sit empty, so you can complain about that?

Another thing I believe you have to keep in mind is that Disney knows who their customers are better than probably anyone else. They know everything you do from the moment you log onto their website to book a vacation (even if handled through a travel agent) until you get on your plane to go back home. In addition to all of the info they collect that way, they also are constantly surveing their guests to get more specific information.

They don't build meet and greets because it is a cheap attraction. They build them because thats what the guests are asking for. And believe me, people ask a lot..

Pleasure Island was built when everyone was trying to cater to a specific segment of the vacation public that wasn't well represented in the mix of offerings in the particular area. It was a Church Street Station killer for lack of a better description. Disney wanted that demographic back on property.

Since that time, a lot of things have changed in the world. This is especially true after 9/11. People become much more "nesting and family oriented". Thats something that PI didn't and couldnt cater too. They tried when they decided non-club attending guests could get on the Island without paying. It didn't help. In fact created an opportunity for local riff-raff to infiltrate the are instead. Remember a couple of years ago when there was more or less a a DTD crimewave?

There is still room for adult evening entertainment but it has to take a different form. A couple of restaurants, street musicians, sophisticated lounge type atmospheres would work.

Westside to me has always been on the verge of failure. When Virgin left, the major draw for the non-theatre and non-cirque crowd was gone also. The rest of the stores were ok to browse on your way to somewhere else but really never had more than a novelty draw.

What I see going on now is an attempt to bring "Disney" to that side of the property. Ridemakerz with the ability to recreate your vrsion of some Pixar vehicles is a good one. The D-Street store will inject a little more Disney on the Westside. Throw in an ESPNzone and they will be on their way to returning a vibrant feel to the area.

I like the idea, I know DTD is going to keep getting third party stores, anyone thinking otherwise doesn't know modern Disney too well.

I'm not sure if it's good to have in the old Virgin building, but if it's just temporary, then it's ok. Maybe this is a way to test-market it without spending tons of money on a new building/massively refurbing a building.

This is all well and nice that they are putting places back in DTD but that place is ridiculous.

I went on their website and those case can easily get up to $80. $80 for a little car that does pretty much nothing. What a waste. I am into remote control hobbies but this is nothing more then a glorified matchbox car.

The Virgin store is a huge space and couldn't have down anything with it. Sorry but what a waste.

The prices for the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique start at $50 and go up to nearly $200 and 2 locations are packed daily. I can easily see mom and daughter going to BBB and father and son heading to Ridemakerz.

I've got to agree with you on this one. Branson, MO has one of these and the cars are horrible. The styling for these things are little more than stickers and wheels with scoops and tails. You are better off spending your money at toys r us.

I think father and son would head to the pirate place instead and get made up like a pirate.

Father and son won't be able to go to Ridemakerz becauz mother and daughter are spending a bloody fortune on their hair and nailz! :D

As far as I can tell, WDW saw the kinds of money going to Church Street and decided "We want that business! We want to give childless adults more reason to come here! We want that money!" So they built PI and they saw some more of the problems associated with running nightclubs and bars - most notably, they have more of a tendency to attract and provoke a more unsavory element than MK tends to. So they said "We want out!" AC, and perhaps CW, were innocent victims of this mentality, but since some of their production budget came from people who were paying to go to PI but necessarily those clubs (just as some people paid to go to PI but had no intention of going anywhere else BUT AC/CW), and the idea of PI was being able to flow from club to club, those 2 wouldn't survive without being part of something larger. Quite frankly, I wonder if this is accurate, and if those clubs were re-opened, with their own cover charges but with the option of staying as long or as little as you want, if they'd have some value. But hey, I'm not part of the Disney brain trust, what do I know?

As far as ridemakerz goes, considering it's already only scheduled to be a limited-time offering, it's not going to hurt, and they'd possibly make it permanent if it proved popular. If it doesn't prove popular, then the people who don't want it to be there have nothing to worry about, it'll be gone before year's end.
