I voted indifferent, but I'd like to see them removed, or reset.

I'm included at giving out reps for no reason. I think most people are.

I think that people are starting to understand what to use the rep system for and the abuse of previous times wouldn't be around if reset. I don't care about losing my boxes.

I think that signing reps should be required and that an explanation should be as well.

Well, that's easy for you to say. I'm the only member on this board to have such wonderful negative reputation. I consider it to be an honor. Most people would have been banned long before they reached my level of negative reputation.

I agree and I always do.

Woody, I'm curious...

Do you really have that many negative rep points for bad posts? Or are you more like a Blue Meanie where "YES" means "NO" and so if someone wants to compliment you, they give you negative points?

I realize this could have been asked in a private message, but I'll bet a lot of people would be curious to know about this... :)

Actually, it has been discussed in both PM and the public forum. In review, it's very simple. When the reputation system first started on this board, I made light of it because I knew it would result in a popularity contest. I observed as several members "whored" themselves for positive reputation. Early on, it even got to the point where some members were saying, "I'll give you good rep. if you give me back good rep.". That type of activity still persists.

I decided to go the opposite direction. I openly solicited for negative reputation! It worked and I got a bunch of people on the board to help (thanks mkt!). Well, our benevolent administrator (Steve) decided to grant me -1,000 reputation points as a direct result of my solicitations. While I was grateful for his attention it also caused me some consternation. I was concerned because I now wondered, how many negative points can I get before I am kicked off? I still don't know the answer.

Oh, I almost forgot. I have been accused of being a troll on several occasions! As I recall, I think I was described as a "class C" troll. Well, if that's what I am, then I guess I'll have to live with that label. I've been called worse things.

Please understand that I don't want you to judge me by the color or rank of my reputation. Judge me by the character and thoughtfulness of my posts. Sometimes I am very sincere while other times I am just frivolous. You be the judge!

But we still don't' know if we should give you red or green when we approve of a sample of your frivolous meanderings!

Quality, not quantity is what counts towards a good rep.

If you post honestly, and answer questions to the best of your ability then you will gain a good reputation.

Post counts really do not matter. We have not always had the rep system and reading posts and seeing how people act and treat others is what gains my respect. Long before those little green boxes arrived I knew who I could trust for good info and who I couldn't.

Take your time and read thru various threads that interest you, add something if want. When people get to know you, your "true reputation" will be established.

Sorry. In theory, this is the case. In reality, not so much.

If QUALITY is what truly counted, people like Lebernadin, Tenchu, and MrNonacho (and dozens more) would definitely have more green than someone such as myself. You post more. You get more. It's simple math, as it gives people more of an opportunity to like what you say.

But don't sell yourself short.

Yeah- you do get more because you post more BUT your posts are usually pretty well thought-out. It's a combination of those things that have earned you so much green. A person could post every five minutes all the livelong day but if everything he writes is rude or unhelpful, he is never going to end up where you are now.

I like the reputation system. While some reputations are higher or lower than they should be at any given time, there are solid positives resulting from each established board member being able to say "good job" to someone's post. When someone is inconsiderate, rude or just plain offensive, they take a hit to their reputation. I think making people be responsible in that fashion for what they write helps make the board a better place.

It is not perfect, but I like it. I also like knowing exactly how many points I have. **shrug**

Th reputation system has gotten so bloated it could be considered meaningless. Again, as TigsMom said, name recognition is what I use. You cannot go by the number of boxes because too much rep is given out for reasons that were not intially intended.

It was a great idea, if only more abided by giving rep for helpful, well written, GREAT information, insead just donating to friends.

Thanks for a great site, Steve.
