Hmmmmm so in simple language the structure and what's holding it together are steadily dissolving and will eventually be consumed by the waters of the lagoon.
I can't say for sure what's rusting, but that's certainly in the realm of possibility with no maintenance. To be fair though, bridges are often made of steel and require maintenance to avoid similar situations.

Note, the rust is coming from drain holes. Paint all you want, it coming back. If you put a good coat of paint on the vertical surfaces, at least you can pressure wash it.
They can change the drain holes into rock-carved gargoyles!!

Were these barges designed to have water spraying all day and not just during the show?
They’ve had land to use for the last 38 years and some change that didn’t require waiting for a maintenance and staging area to clear and they haven’t used it.So yeah, only half joking about the expansion pad.
Now that the nightly show will not be moved backstage nightly, there will be less need for using that area for maintenance or staging etc.
So then, much easier to use that land for a new country. If they choose to. Someday.
Or a more permanent event space so they can remove the "temporary" odd millennium celebration tent (it's 2021!) and expand the U.K. pavilion as it should be done
