Refillable Mug Policy

Hi everyone. I did a search for this but nothing really answered my question. And if there was a thread already Im sorry but I couldnt find it. My question is...I have several Mugs from different resorts and for years I have brought them back to the resort and used them again and again...I heard a rumor or read it somewhere but I forget....that now you have to buy a new mug everytime you go and that they have this policy written on the new mugs now. I havent been down since Nov 03 and we stayed at Ft. Wilderness and didnt have mugs but I know in the past I had brought ones back and had no problem. I was just wondering if anyone has been down recently and noticed a change at all. Thanks in advance for any info!

What a GREAT idea!!!! I like that one. BUT....how would they know that the guest was at that resort? Or, did you mean resort guest Disney wide?

Thanks. I think resort guest Disney wide. Disney provides the fountain drinks at each resort so where they got it shouldn't make a difference. It all comes out of the expense somehow.

Mug

Thanks for the last three threads, I was starting to feel like a criminal. I think the arguement IS ridiculous and everyone will do what they personally feel is right. I do pay upward of 300 a night each visit and I am NOT rich. And I also have never seen anybody told not to use a mug. I love Disney and everything about it and I would never do anything if I thought they would go belly up. And I also loved what Sledge said. So anyway, Lets forget the what we all feel and just say Long Live Disney!!!!!!

During my trip to Disney in August I purchased a mug for $12 at the Wilderness Lodge and re-filled it 30 times, yes I actually counted to see how much money I saved :lookaroun . At $2.29 for each large soda, that's a savings of about $64!!! But, I was stuck in the hotel because of Hurricane Charley, so you can subtract a few re-fills. But it's definetly worth it to buy it, and I always buy new ones every time I go. I feel good every time I fill my cup, and with that saving's who wouldn't !! So just buy a new cup.

Oh, I had a scary thought. What if Disney resorts treated your refillable mug as a loaner with a deposit on your reservation and it was mandatory you turn it back in after you check out? They will recycle them and you would not have them to reuse for your next trip unless you paid the deposit on your next trip. I know it is crazy, don't criticize me for be creative...not wishful. :drevil:

Maybe they could just toss them or recycle them to make park benches (like they do with the milk containers that make up most of the benches at AK).

I would hope no one would ever criticize anyone for being creative in a positive sense. I love your ideas, keep them coming. :)

Hehe, this thread is pretty good humored for such a polarizing topic. :)

I have heard from more than one source that indeed Disney parks do get fountain products for free - in return for the extensive advertising they get in-parks, and for being the only soda company in WDW. The McDonalds comparison isn't really valid, because you are talking about thousands of locations across the world, not one set of theme parks. Although I'm sure someone has the swimming pool measurements of how much soda WDW goes through, but it's still not a drop in the McBucket.

Regardless, even if Disney does pay some token amount (which, as I said, I have been assured by a couple of sources it does not), Disney could easily stop this practice if they so chose using stickers or color coding. My guess is, it's really not a big deal to them. The vast majority of people who visit WDW go once a year at most, if that - and I just don't think it has as big an impact as we might think.

I bet it would cost them much more to hire "soda greeters" to check your mug (and implement some sort of system for coding them) than the small percentage of guests who reuse mugs. IMHO, the label on the mug is more to ward off eBay-type reselling more than anything else. It's just like the warning on park hoppers that say they must be used by the same person each day - they could enforce it, but they'd have to change their entire way of doing business to do so, and in the end, it's just not worth it to them.

What if people just wised up and stopped drinking cokes and other soft drinks by the gallon daily? Everyone of both sides of this arguement - do yourselves a favor and just stop drinking the bloody soft drinks - they are terrible for you. Then you also don't have to worry about bringing or not bringing your mug and whether or not you are getting a good deal or stealing, etc. You will only find yourself getting a mug if you really want to, instead of it being a "necessity".

LOL, and of course someone has to come in and be righteous and rude.

Ah, gotta love the vitriol that a Disney site inspires.

I figured it would be evident that I was trying to put a bit of humor into this debate. I don't consider anyone "evil" for drinking soft drinks. It was a joke! Just trying to point out that this whole mug thing really does not have to be such a big deal. sheesh - just trying to lighten it up

I have found out there are a few topics that create some heated threads--refillable mugs, smoking in the parks, children at Pleasure Island, and new park rumors. Have I missed anything? We know if any of these topics come up, beware of some good and bad feedback. That is what makes these boards so great, though. You can hear all sides.

As an afterthought, Disney knows very well that guests use these cups on more than one visit. If Disney was not okay with this, they would discontinue the bottemless mug promotion, period. They are still making far more in profit than if they didn't have the program. We all know that they quickly end something that doesn't produce profits. The program benefits Disney despite whether you use or abuse the system.

I totally agree with you. They HAVE to know it's going on. If they didn't they would be stupid and they are not. I believe that if they were REALLY that concerned with it, they would stop the program. If they haven't already stopped it, then I don't see how they could anytime in the near future b/c it has obviously been a problem for a while.

The refillable mug program originally was designed so each time you stayed at a resort, if you had that resorts mug, you could bring it back and use it.
I was told at check-in about the mugs the first year they were available, and then again when I purchased them, that they were good for a lifetime.

Oops..Disney goofed up :hammer:

They forgot about the "Find-a-way-to-take-advantage-of-this " people out there.

Greedy People were the problem...people wanting to make money or take advantage of the system.

And THAT people...will ruin a good thing every time. :(

People started selling the mugs on Ebay
People loaned or sold their mugs to friends and/or relatives who were going to WDW.

So...the good people at Disney World were FORCED to change the mug policy to "Length of Stay".

And now...since people are upset about the change, they choose to blantently disregard the new policy and use their old mugs.

I, for one, will be sad when the Free Refill Mugs no longer exist...and mark my word, it WILL happen.

Why....because a small minority of greedy Park Guests want something for nothing...and will ruin this wonderful Option for everyone.

Then we can ALL go back to paying $2.00+ for a little bit of cola syrup with carbonated water added.

Nobody wins...

But WAIT!!

We can always take our mugs to Ice Station Cool and fill them up THERE!

Don't take the mugs. They are too hard to sneak and not spill them. Do what I do and take water bottles. :D

Joking... sorta.

Yep, missed a couple. 5 in a unit for 4 only (unless the 5th is under 3). Sneaking a child in that is 3 as if it were younger ( I love the justifications for that one) and smoking in a non smoking unit/room or on the balcony of a smoking room near a non smoking room or smoking on the balcony of a non smoking room. :)

Well, in all due respect, although this rule has been there forever, people still do it. Now that Disney is printing it on the mugs, they hope it will happen less. However, keep in mind that 99% of the time the rule won't be enforced, and on top of that it doesn't cost Disney anything not to enforce it. Disney counts on people not bringing their mugs back, and they also count on you buying more mugs each trip. Need I mention that Disney gets the drinks for free compliments of Coca-Cola. So, it's really not much.

And remember, stealing is bad. :)

I'm not trying to justify anyone's actions here, I'm only giving you the facts. :)
