Does this even matter? Since there are two lawsuits on this issue. What is the point here?

EDIT: Disney can also add this to their lawsuit.

It’s supposed to be a means for allowing the Board to free itself from the development agreement. The question will be whether or not the Board uses it. Without the Board trying to invoke this new authority Disney might not have standing to add it to their federal complaint.

The potential problem for the District is that the language refers to agreements that were in effect. They just filed a complaint is state court saying the opposite, that it’s not in effect. Which is it? Will the state and district present different arguments in federal court?

I’ve been looking at Charleston, Savannah, NC - I just don’t see how those ports (and the surrounding areas) have anywhere near the infrastructure (interstates, airports, et let alone space and routes) to meaningfully siphon off any substantial business from the central to south Florida cruise operations. It really feels as fantastical as the notion of packing up the entirety of WDW and moving it to NC.
We’re also assuming the ports want the business. For example there have been public studies and Savannah / Georgia Ports don’t want cruise ships. It’s one of the largest cargo ports in the US and only getting bigger. Cruise ships and their fees don’t do nearly as well.
This was all started as a hypothetical on what Disney could or could not do with the cruise business. Nobody is suggesting they will do it today or it will happen any time in the future. It was a discussion of could not will happen in the extreme case where that business is interfered with. WDW in all practical terms cannot be moved. While TWDC would be walking away from investments in the FL cruise ports and the logistics may not be optimal that business can be moved. It would take time and money to build out an alternative port or ports but it’s possible if it became necessary. With WDW the primary attraction is attached to the ground with a cruise ship the port is not as significant a part of the experience.
It is also worth mentioning much of the South is (or at least was) politically similar to Florida. So if Disney only wants to invest in solidly Blue states, that will pose some challenges.
Not sure where Disney ever said they only wanted to invest in solidly blue states. They literally just announced $17B of investment in FL.

I can definitely see the board trying to take some extreme action now that they have this power. At least for the time being.

Any injunction should stop that swiftly though.

I'm surprised Georgia didn't get in on the cruise line game. The southern shore of GA is just 30 minutes from Jacksonville Airport and 5 minutes from I95.
Because they don’t want them?

Wait.

Wait wait wait.

We're all playing along with that "announcement" like it was sincere, and not a negotiating chip in this whole saga? Are you kidding me? That announcement was obviously a PR stunt for Iger to come out and say "look at me, I'm a grand hero who wants to invest in the parks and create jobs and that mean bully DeSantis won't let me. Darn, I guess I can't spend all of those billions of dollars I wanted to spend."

This isn’t exactly new, but in light of Disney’s recently filed federal lawsuit and DeSantis now likely trying to separate the actions of the legislature from his own as a defense… this quote seems particularly problematic for him.

Blaise Ingoglia (Florida Senate) “I know this governor and I know this governor well. I have a couple words for Disney, you are not going to win this fight. This governor will.

Not a good look.

I said 'South Georgia.' Not the most Northern shore of Georgia.

And Savannah isn't the same as 'all of Georgia.'

Just because one town says 'no' to cruise lines, doesn't mean all the other towns will as well.

Along with all the hurdles mentioned here about Disney moving parts out of Florida, I think it also comes down to potentially only being a temporary solution. We’ve witnessed the swing from friendly to hostile in Florida. If it holds in Florida, why couldn’t the same happen elsewhere? Disney needs to tackle at the source, nip in the bud.

I’d wager a guess that once the Discovery process starts up, Disney will find discussions that will make this look tame.

Georgia has about 100 miles of Atlantic coast. There’s a lot more room than just Savannah.

You know what's funny?
You're aware that the overwhelming majority of voters in the state of Florida did not vote to keep him in office, right?
But those who got off their behinds and voted did...and that is what counts. That is who you want to appeal to. The ones likely to vote...

Let me add in a disclaimer that this post doesn't endorse what he has done before someone has a meltdown.

How much did Disney spend over the last 10 years in FL? Why would $17B over 10 years seem like a PR stunt? @ParentsOf4 probably has a chart or something.
