That's why they're targeting all special districts created before a certain date, and not just Reedy Creek.

These guys are ********, but not idiots (well, not all of them)
They’re taking a scorched earth approach that could definitely backfire. Someone just needs to start pushing the tax increases that need to cover the bonds and financing, not to mention all of the lost jobs.

Three Bills are heard during the Special Session (Total of six -- one each for the House and Senate. House is odd. Senate is even)
  • 1C and 2C: Congressional Districts -- Draws FL Congressional Districts. Outside our scope here
  • 3C and 4C: Special Districts -- Dissolves all special districts prior to the 1968 FL Constitution, including RCID
  • 4C and 5C: Social Media Platforms -- Removes exemptions from social media platform regulations for a "Theme park or entertainment complex” which is "a complex comprised of at least 25 contiguous acres owned and controlled by the same business entity and which contains permanent exhibitions and a variety of recreational activities and has a minimum of 1 million visitors annually." (Section 509.013(9), Florida Statutes)

Opponents of the one guy are making the mistake of assuming that he's just a retread of that other guy in a better-fitting suit. But that other guy actually was an idiot and the new guy is just extremely skilled at pretending to be one. Even if you disagree with every word he says, I think his opponents (including the new bald guy) are underestimating his savvy at the retail politics game at their own peril.

Wait, wait... You're saying that a certain bald-headed CEO is making yet another misstep? This is unprecedented!!! ;)

Since 2019 was their first year of profit in over a decade, I think it's safe to assume they've lost money over 2+ years of a pandemic.

Every theme park lost money at some point over the last 2+ years. Cherry picking some recent data does not equate to "still failing". Christ, their 30th celebration is light year's above what WDW got for its 50th.

By very careful negotiations and agreements before a single shovel ever hit dirt, with a company that was bleeding money and near bankruptcy after EPCOT overages and a failing studio.

The Disney of today wouldn't, and hasn't since, agreed to a similar deal.

Notwithstanding s. 189.072(2), any independent special district established by a special act prior to the date of ratification of the Florida Constitution on November 5, 1968, and which was not reestablished, re-ratified, or otherwise reconstituted by a special act or general law after November 5, 1968, is dissolved effective June 1, 2023. An independent special district affected by this subsection may be reestablished on or after June 1, 2023, pursuant to the requirements and limitations of this chapter.

So reading the bill text, I think I see the play here. Revoke RCID (giving Desantis the win and final word), then reorganize as a standard CDD under the post 1968 framework. "New" RCID takes on the existing debt and assets, circumventing the issue of the counties absorbing it, but naturally has a lot less power and is no more special than anybody else in the state.

I don't support retaliatory action by the Governor, and I'm not even going to start on the issues that got us here in the first place... but I kinda support this outcome? It puts Disney on a level playing field and they still get the powers they need, and not the ones they don't.
