News Reedy Creek Improvement District and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District

People still don't understand what is going on. RCID will not be eliminated. There will be no tax hike on properties in Orange County. Read what the law says. Disney has to go to the FL government before JAN 2023 to renegotiate the deal or the district will be dissolved. Apparently their intention is to keep RCID, change it and make Disney pay more taxes. The election will make no difference since they need to do this before any new government gets sworn in on 2023. No matter what side you support, you have to recognize the governor knows how to play chess. This will cost Disney millions in lawyers and taxes, and they have no other option than to negotiate with republicans.

Except it’s neither. They removed the District to punish Disney and have just announced an intention to raise Disney’s and only Disney’s taxes. They’re two separate actions.
Hmm ... would this count as the state government's indication that they intend Disney's taxes to go up (and not just forgive $1+ billion in debt)???

Thanks for adding that, I should have noted that tourism was a major point of the video. I'm sure that had a big impact on the initial passage of RCID.

Less we forget... Walt pretty much walked on water in the early 60s and was known to gold bricks. Who wouldn't want him coming to your swamp and saying "I want to make your state the home of my next big idea... one bigger and grander than anything ever attempted". FL had nothing to lose.

Anyone surprised they are still silent on this? Was expecting some kind of statement from Disney.
I am not that surprised. I think Disney would like to see this blow over. They don’t want to be in some political fight with the state of FL. It’s bad for business. They also couldn’t stay silent. That would also be bad for business. I think their hope was they would come out and make a strong statement opposing the bill and then that would be the end of it. All political back and forth aside, there’s not much Disney can do to stop this bill. Right now I don’t think Disney wants a public fight over RCID. The bill purposely left the date over a year away. Plenty of time for cooler heads to prevail and for the state to reverse course, plus the election will be long over.

Any new district requires state approval and officials have already stated that would be contingent on being able to censor Disney’s production.

For what it's worth, CNN is reporting that a FL legislator who has been in touch with Disney execs says that Disney doesn't think the legislature can legally dissolve the district because of the provision that it has to be voted on by the residents of the district, and that's what their lawyers are concentrating on.

If the district is not dissolved but Disney pays more in taxes and the taxes are paid to RCID isn’t that essentially Disney paying more taxes to themselves? That will teach em 🤔🤦‍♂️

It will not be a new district. Read the law again. He is just forcing them to renegotiate RCID. Bay lake and Lake Buena Vista are still their own cities and can't be dissolved. If they go to court, the fl government will tell the judge Disney have until Jan 2023 to renegotiate. The court will need to wait until after Jan 2023 to take action. Disney will have no other option than to donate to republicans and renegotiate a new deal with them. If not, the CEO could face stock holder lawsuit for lost profits.

Disney will loose in court on this one because the Reedy Creek Act was granted before the state constitution was established. As a Disney shareholder I am furious that they waded into this whole mess.
Disney's argument likely will have little to do with the state constitution. Disney probably will frame this as a violation of the 1st Amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech [emphasis added], or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Citizens United suggests that corporations such as Disney have rights that are protected by the 1st Amendment.

A reasonable argument can be made that the State of Florida passed a law that abridged Disney's right to free speech.

If Disney continues to publicly use the full power of the Disney Corporation to attempt to overturn the will of the people, does the pushback stop with RCID? Nobody elected Disney.

Losing RCID may be the least of Disney’s upcoming problems. I won’t do business with companies that hate me. I’m not a fringe guy here, just a member of the other half the country, millions of us, that have different views. Views that, until recently, were respected (or at least quietly ignored) by Disney.

I’m hopeful Disney will come to their senses, but it may very well take a decade... and a hostile takeover? Perhaps losing RCID will force some self reflection on The Corporation before worse things happen. We can hope. I’d like to be a customer again.
What? Why do you think Disney hates you? Have they done something to you personally or do you you believe they hate everyone they don’t agree with?

Also, what will of the people?

As for a hostile takeover, by who? There aren’t that many people/companies who could afford to even try it.

Not trying to jump on you I just legit don’t understand.
