Random UK Pavilion Stick

Okay, this may be the wrong place for this, but hey. I couldn't find anywhere else. Maybe some brits can help me out.

I can't for the life of me figure out what the GIANT pole thing in the center of the UK pavilion road it. The big wooden-looking pillar with a metal pointy thing at the top. Almost like a sundial/weathervane hybrid. There's probably some history behind it that I'm being totally ignorant about. But it really throws me off. I want to know what it is.

Help me please!

Picture for reference. Disregard the crazy kid sitting on it :lookaroun

That's the "Cole Pole"!

My family take our picture at that pole every year and have therefore dubbed it the "Cole Pole"

Otherwise, i have no idea!

Officially it was called a `monument`.

Monument to what though? Directions?

I did think also it may have been a hitching post for horses - given the pavilions timeframe - but they`d be very tall horses.

It looks like a WWI/II memorial monument that you get in pretty much every UK town... so looking a little authentically British, but not having the connotations of "war" as that is unappropriate for Disney. Just a stab in the dark. :veryconfu

Clara - good point, though the styling is a bit old even for 1918. I think.

And welcome to WDWMagic!

It is an obelisk. Go through Italy, Ireland, and UK and almost every square will have one. They are religious symbols, pagan symbols and just common things in many many towns. Many older towns in New England have them as well. It was a good meeting place in the center of the village. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If that's the case, I see it as no different than the Liberty Tree in Liberty Square... war-ish, but for all the right (and somewhat obscure) reasons.
