Quiet 40th Anniversary

I was speaking with a friend last night who works in WDW marketing and she was saying how busy they all were with work. She said the Summer Nightastic campaign was literally thrown at them at the last minute and that it took precious time away from them when they should have been working on next year's campaign.
I asked her if the campaign is going to be focused on the 40th Anniversary and she sadly said no. She followed up by stating that it would have been a challenge to focus next year's marketing message around that especially when there are no "new products" to push next year and seeing how the slate is really slim of new offerings in 2011 they are deciding to go on a campaign that will emphasize emotion and memories, like the Magical Gatherings promotion in 2003 and What Will You Celebrate in 2009.
However, a few weeks back I was speaking with a friend who works in the Disney Design Group and asked him if he knew of any plans for the 40th. He said all he knew was his department was working on merchandise for it. There's going to be some pretty nice things but had no idea what the other divisions were doing.
They have done this before. During the 100 Years of Magic campaign there was a smaller selection of merchandise promoting WDW's 30th Anniversary but seeing how the 100 Years was a bigger deal they focused on that.
I know there has been talks of a new parade but I just don't see that happening if the company is not standing behind the celebration with the big marketing blitzes that other celebrations have seen.
This was not the news I wanted to hear, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out.

there might be a few more retro shirts and merch with the big D logo and a mention of 40 years but it will really be geared toward a small base

Yea I expect this some generic 40th merch, maybe some kind of discount, and maybe a new daytime parade. Beyond that I don't expect much.

Here is to hoping that I am dead wrong!

when.....will.....CoP.....get a new ending :zipit::brick:

Back when there were serious plans for a 40th there was an idea floating around to tie in a classic attraction from each land in the MK with the 40th and the CoP would be chosen for Tomorrowland and be updated.

I hope you are wrong as well. It does deserve something special. Lets just hope 50 is a huge celebration.

It won't be, remember this is Disney World not the precious Disneyland.:fork:
After all they have said it before that the world gets fewer updates compared to the land. :brick:

This is interesting as other members in the know have hinted on a possibility of a big 40th celebration (lasting a couple of years, with Fantasyland Forest opening at the end - as said in the D23 magazine) with a special parade and stage show + merchandise line.

I miss the days when Disney didn't have such a low opinion of their parks that they felt the need to come up with some big celebration marketing campaign every year.

COP and the Tiki Room were on the drawing board for the 40th. Now a new day parade (!) is about the only thing definitely planned.

Then there's that FLE thing... ;)

I believe him about the Nightastic/40th anniversary problem. The marketing and DDG departments are often thrown things at the last minute. Much of Disney's design work has been outsourced to a local firm lately, which is why so many things use the same clip art. Disney Parks has some of the worst timeline planning in the world.

I miss the days when Disney didn't have such a low opinion of their parks that they felt the need to come up with some big celebration marketing campaign every year.

That's because the people in charge wanted their parks to be the best possible for bragging rights and simply because they could. There was once a real desire to constantly improve the parks and blow people away with the latest, greatest attractions. Of course they wanted to make money, but management believed in the "if you build it, they will come" strategy. Now they focus on discounting the inflated prices to attract guests.

EPCOT Center never would have been built in today's executive climate.

But they're obsessed with tech. You can pull up wait times on your phone! Yaaaaaaay.

I'm going to be seriously ticked off if Disney doesn't do anything big for the 40th. It should be the main focus of the entire celebration.

If there is a new daytime parade next year, and I do mean NEW! NOT REUSED! will MK be stuck with Celebrate A Dream Come True till the fall or something? Or won't we have to wait that long? haha
