Question about the name EPCOT Center

I think Danny Kaye says it best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LApowdPGyI8

(Fast-forward to 5:10)

Just so there's no confusion... :p

Danny Kaye's explanation, while correct, was intentionally confusing in order to be humorous. Put simply, the entire WDW property is technically "Epcot". The theme park known as "Epcot" is in the geographical center of the property.

Hey, wasn't that much easier than posting a YouTube link and making everyone watch it just to get the simple answer to a simple question?

In 1994, EPCOT geographically shifted 3 feet 4 Inches to the left due to an unexpected massive geologic upheaval. Everything was fine, but obviously it was no longer "centered" so a name change was in order.

According to what I recall..The Epcot Logo that is right behind The Fountain of Nations in Innoventions is where the Actual Center of the entire resort is..

I don't know, the spot may be the North/South centre point, but East/West it doesn't look like it's centred. Expand out on that map without changing the centre point and the distance West to DAKL is a lot further than the distance to the Eastern end of DTD.

Unless the property has changed dimensions since EPCOT was built?

EDIT: Nevermind :brick:

DAK and DAKL were built after. If you go by what was built at the time, it's the centre point. I need that extra hour of sleep!

Actually I believe the geographic center is where that large circle is if you go toward The Land pavilion, where there's many things about accomplishments in science, etc.

As noted by others: The theory in 1982 was that the entire WDW property was Walt's Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, or EPCOT, and the theme park that opened that year was the center of EPCOT, meaning the heart of WDW property, both physically and philosophically...thus "EPCOT Center."

These days, it seems the WDW-as-EPCOT theory has pretty much gone the way of the dodo, and "Epcot" (just a word now, not an acronym) only refers to the theme park.

While I don't have a definitive answer why the word "Center" was added to the parks name, I think maybe it's possible that it's as simple as this:

A "Center" is defined as "a point that is pivotal in relation to an indicated activity, interest, or condition."

Things that come to mind to me are:
Day Care Center
Shopping Center
EPCOT Center

That was my original thought as well, but the geographical center idea is pretty interesting.

Although in many Reedy Creek Improvement District documents, the name lives on as a referall to the entire Florida project. For example, (to my knowlege) the building codes and regulations for the entire eleventy-billion acres of resort property are still referred to as the "EPCOT building code."

Is that the "seismic shift" in the resort that everyone keeps referring to? :lookaroun

Nope, that's a myth.

It used to be somewhere in Communicore Court/Innoventions Plaza but the selling of land has caused it to shift toward the Land Pavilion.

Actually I believe the geographic center is where that large circle is if you go toward The Land pavilion, where there's many things about accomplishments in science, etc.
That's not what that's there for (It's plussing!) but it is actually a liiiitle bit closer to the Land than it is to Innov.

The center (as taken) of WDW is indeed now between Inno West and The Land.

`Center` from what I can tell came into play around 1976 when World Showcase moved from next to the T&TC to roughly where it was built. Futureworld was planned as a phase 2, but was added to Showcase as a phase one, and was also reffered to as the EPCOT Theme Center. By 1978 the word `theme` was dropped, and the whole project was reffered to as EPCOT Center.

Trivia... in 1986 the area to the west of the park was to have the Tishman Hotels, but be called `Disney Center` and feature several hotels around waterways, a golf course, retail and entertainment. The area developed into the Crescent Lake resorts and the CBR.

Isn't this part where two very distracting hotels are located?

But for what i heard this is not the original area for those hotels (and this coming from a big suit from those hotels).

The Swan and Dolphin are there, yes. The Tishman Hotels were originally going to be built where TDO is today. Try a thread search for Tishman and lawsuit.
