Another thing to consider. Our game might benefit from having it's own distinct art style. That could help blend the "real" environments with the modern Disney with the classic Disney with the Pixar with the in park characters with the live action character with etc.

Something cell-shaded and cartoony like WindWaker might work.

Would it be possible to reuse some of the Disney Infinity style graphics. I thought they were great!

(Also, maybe by scanning your old DI characters, one could get new skins like the amibos in BotW)

I personally think we should stray away the amiibo concept for now, and hammer out the core of the game. As time passes and as we finish we can include all the DLC and things like this we've talked about.

I'd like to volunteer doing some concept art...so I can start on it soon. Would like to create a world map, somewhat in the style of this (which I drew):

Was thinking I could draw each known landmark separately (such as the Castle, Space Mt., Splash), giving us the freedom to place them on a larger expansive map as we like. So it won't be at this level of detail or complexity. As new ideas come and go, they can easily be added. Thoughts?

THIS SOUNDS AMAZING! :)

Would having the most evil of Disney villains (Scar, Maleficent, Jafar, Evil Queen, etc.) merge themselves into one super-villain be too dark?
If we could pull it off without making it look weird then sure.

Sorry I'm late to the party on this. I'm really loving the ideas so far. I've got an idea; maybe as the game goes along, you can ally yourselves with the good Disney characters; and form a giant party.

I can easily imagine a shot for the final boss battle with the player's avatar standing alongside all these Disney heroes, preparing to take on the main villain.

That would be cool. Like maybe when you do side quests for certain characters they can join your traveling party (maybe a max of 2 characters in party). And they all come back for the final boss.

I'm not sure, this sounds like it may be a bit too lose to Kingdom Hearts

And you could change out members of the traveling party, depending on the situation.

In the case of Kingdom Hearts, most of the characters there only join you in their home world, and "Summons" only come about occasionally. With this game, you could stick with the characters throughout the events of the story.

What if we do the party members more like paper Mario?

In that game, each party member has a different ability to help with moving around besides helping in combat. So, unlocking new party members also unlocks more if the world. But you can only have one person out at a time.

So, maybe Jack Sparrow can pick locks or Tigger gives you a super jump.

Tl;dr
Get like one (maybe two sometimes) new party member each land. But limit to one out at a time. And make them serve a purpose outside of combat.

If we're to have partner I would prefer it to be this way, but another thing to consider. Let's say the player is climbing the Frontierland mountain range how would their partner react? Wold the climb along with them, or stay at the base? While it is a good thought it has the potential to be too much for the game. I say this because I can't think of an Open world game where the partner follows throughout the entirety.

Additionally if we go this route with the partners are we going to keep the Figment/Dreamfinder storyline, or throw that one out the window? If I remember correctly Figment was going to be the original guide/partner ala Navi.

We could take a page from Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom; and have each character have their own special power. If that character is part of the Player's party of the moment, the Player can use their power.

Maybe the major characters of Disney (Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Pluto, Oswald, Chip, Dale, Scrooge McDuck, Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Ludwig von Drake) could serve as additional major characters in the game, alongside Figment and Dreamfinder.

Yen Sid could help with "strengthening" powers; and Ludwig von Drake could provide some sort of science-y thing to help the player out.

In fact, why don't we make a list of all the potential characters we could interact with in the game? I really want this game to be full of fanservice to all of Disney's films. Maybe we could even throw in a few cameos to lesser-known movies and characters?

Obviously Mickey and Co can fit in anywhere, but this is a good starting point on what characters we would want to add

Main Street: Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians, Mouse Detective, Aristocats, Princess and the Frog
Fantasyland: Snow WHite, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Black Cauldron, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, Fantasia 2000, Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Winnie the Pooh, Frozen, Mary Poppins
Liberty Square: Sleepy Hollow, Pocahontas, Princess and the Frog
Frontierland: Bambi, Fox and the Hound, Pocahontas, Brother Bear, Home on the Range
Adventureland: Saludos Amigos, Three Caballeros, Peter Pan, Jungle Book, Aladdin, Lion King, Tarzan, Dinosaur, Emperor's New Groove, Lilo & Stitch, Moana, Pirates of the Caribbean
Tomorrowland: Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Meet the Robinsons, Wreck-It Ralph, Big Hero 6, Tron
Toontown: Zootopia, Chicken Little, Oliver & Co, Bolt, Rescuers, Make Mine Music, Melody Time, Fun and Fancy Free, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I guess I was picturing more traditional platforming/exploring over breath of the wild style climbing. With the partner following behind. Maybe teleporting in a cloud of pixie dust if they fall behind or get separated.

And figment u saw as more of the Clank to our Ratchet gameplay wise than a party member. Figment serving as almost an extension of the player.

But I understand the concerns and focusing more on just the Hero and Figment over a larger party might be smart.

This could be a clever way to do it. Maybe tie it into the autograph book. Like each boost is tied to an autograph, but there is only so much room in the page. So, you are limited by how many you can fit. More powerful boosts take up more room.

Like the stickers in smash Bros brawl

It gives a tangible reason to explore and seek out characters. Some you have to do a quest or challenge before you get their autograph. Others are just difficult to find. Sometimes they're just easy to get.

Could easily be done as pins or cards or anything really instead of autographs.

Could be a clever way to do allies without the issues of party members tcool pointed out.

Also, if we have allies as our state boosters, then we can keep armor as purely aesthetic so people can dress as they want without worrying about stats.

Also, if anyone is interested. I have a few of my favorite videos on game design below:

Sequelitis on Zelda

Digressing and Sidequesting on Super Metroid

And honestly any video by snowman gaming in his Good Game Design series

Here's one super related to what we're doing actually. It talks about things Breath of the Wild does that are really smart compared to other open world games and what makes it work in Zelda
If you only watch one video, make it this one.
