Some of the best Disney has to offer is in the resorts. I believe the magic in the resorts is way higher than the parks. At the resorts everyone is in vacation mode and the same can’t be said at the parks. People are also a lot less stressed at the resorts, I’m not sure why resort only stays are so widely unpopular
Disney resorts do not offer any more, in fact, probably less than thousands of other resorts in this country and in the world. However, the parks are what makes that location unique and why people travel thousands of miles to see it. Hotels, high quality, relaxing hotels are everywhere and are more than likely less expensively. I'm not sure why resort only stays have any popularity at all. ;) :)

Walt would have been tossed out by the shareholders in a revolt that similar to the Roy Disney and Stanley Gold led shareholder revolt that forced Eisner to resign. Walt once said he doesn’t make movies to make money. He makes money to make more movies. An action plan like that would spell a CEOs departure. Walt’s idea is complete financial incompetence to run a business .
I believe that the only thing he was mutually dependent on was the ABC Television Network and they on him. The one time they went public, if I remember correctly Walt bought them out and/or was the majority holder, if not total owner before he died. For that reason... he just plain was not happy about being forced by outsiders about how to run his company and his park.

Walt wasn’t directly affiliated with TWDC when Disneyland was happening. The board and Roy divested from him so while he was still the face of Walt Disney Productions for marketing, he wasn’t directly involved with it either.

He was a minority owner of Disneyland at the time of opening and technically by the end when he and it got folded back into TWDC he was given more authority over it.

The loan from ABC that turned out to be mutually beneficial to get Disneyland off the ground from a construction and a marketing aspect. Roy was the one that used the revenues and proceeds from Disneyland to pay off the remaining ABC ownership of Disneyland and put Disneyland in the negative when TWDC finalized the Acquisition of WED/WDI and Disneyland Inc.

Walt did a lot to make Disneyland happen, but without Roy and C. V. Wood it possibly never happens or succeeds the way it did.

Of course the disputes between Walt and C. V. Wood made sure that his name ended up next to nowhere to be found in the history of the company

I agree there are better/cheaper resort options but as Disney fans sometimes you just want a Disney fix without the added stress of the parks, DCL and Aulani are even better ways to get that fix but they usually come with a 5 figure price tag.

Oh yea cause there are hundreds of hotels connected to a gondola system that can transport you to the Caribbean, to the livery riveria that has entertainment at it and outdoor games, to the boardwalk that has live entertainers at it, and then whatever pool you have and then all the food offerings at the resorts. Then you have the ability to connect to alll the other resorts. People go to fort wilderness and never leave it for their trips. Hotels with Disney level staff are few and far between. Disney hotels are extremely unique and the interconnectedness of them just shy of Las Vegas is unparalleled. Disney is Las Vegas for children.

What are some of these better/cheaper resort options that Florida residents can easily access?

In the Parks
Yes

I wouldn't go as far as tagging Disney as a place where children can indulge any vice they want like Vegas. It has alot of amusements and theming yes, fantasy as well. It's no Pinoccio Pleasure Island and it has rules.

Disney world has every single age appropriate vice children can indulge in, just like Vegas does for adults.

I never for a minute meant to imply that Roy wasn't a very strong and efficient partner to Walt. But, it isn't possible to think that Walt wasn't willing to hear Roy out, with the exception of a couple of situations. It was indeed Roy that found the way to pay things off and keep a strong vigilance on the company finances. However, without Walt's determination to make thing happen Roy wouldn't have been needed. As it was, he was very much needed.

Without Roy though, there would be no Walt Disney World. Cows would be back in the pasture. Walt Disney World, as it stands now was not even close to what Walt had envisioned with the exception of Magic Kingdom. At least not much that had been made public. Walt wanted his own controlled city. MK was to draw people in a help pay for a large part of it. In reality the statue in Magic Kingdom should be Mickey holding Roy's hand.

I'm sure there are many that see it that way. I just don't know why one would want to spend that kind of money for what is "given". That is a personal decision but I have to wonder what percentage of people go to WDW and don't go to the parks when the whole reason for the resort to be there is to support the parks and keep you captive. Want some real gondola's, go to Venice and see real gondola's not just in name only. It won't cost a lot more and if you want a very quiet place to relax, you will not find a better place. And the food is incredible.

Most just seem to pile all of the credit on to Walt, but really it was those 3 men (as well as those first imagineers) who collectively made Disneyland happen.

And yes, Walt seemed to view what became MK as an afterthought to draw people in and help to subsidize his City. He was on to the next project, not rehashing the same one as before in different iterations. While he’d certainly understand the business need for the additional parks, etc, I don’t feel like he’d care for the multitude there are now. The one thing I think he would’ve been somewhat inspired by is probably branching into the Cruise industry as that just would’ve been a new test for him.

Aulani for locals who don’t even stay there is sweet. It’s HI state law that any beach is a public beach ( public domain ).
