Have never had that happen, but POTC is one of my all time favorites. I love the simple effects they use to get a big time result with guests. Maybe I will get the cannon fire in our next trip in September!

When the mermaids were added which was October 2012.

I've been on pirates a million times and I never noticed mermaids! Where are they lol? I've noticed the skeleton one but thats it.

Just before you enter the room with the skeleton, watch the water on either side of the boat. You will see what looks like mermaids swimming just benneth the water.

Not to worry, I dodged a bullet (or cannon ball, if you will) with the forcefield my special Mickey wristband placed around me. I am so glad I was wearing it at the time!

It also apparently works as effective birth control.

You meant to say, "you will see what looks like a blue blur that is supposedly a mermaid beneath the water."

IMHO, it's not a particularly effective or impressive effect.

The cannon blast, however, is cool and surprising.

They were selling said toy at one of the parks (maybe Epcot) on our last trip. Having been the target of one of those "air blasts" on Pirates, we were intrigued by the toy version. Definitely one of the best effects in the attraction, but it's hit or miss as to whether you get it...
