Possible Frontierland expansion

To this day I have yet to ride a raft ride at any park that is better than the Popeye barges one over at universal. The ride is well themed and it's one heck of a long ride too :) It would be great if they could make something on par with popeye in the magic kingdom.

I think that's why "Raft Ride" has some of us nervous. Richly themed Raft Rides that are a transportive experience are in VERY short supply in the Themed Entertainment industry. They're all . . . pretty much the same . . . and not known for creating a reliably equal experience for all riders. How many times have you ridden Kali River Rapids where one or two people got drenched and everyone else is bone dry?

I don't believe for a second that Disney COULDN'T create a grand, immersive, truly dynamic ride experience out of a Rapids ride, but given the precedent attractions using that ride system across the world, it would certainly be the exception to a disappointing rule.

That said, are we too quick to assume "Raft Ride" = "River Rapids"? Because I'm realizing that's sort of what's being inferred, but not necessarily what's being implied.

All the water from popeye VS all the glitter and make up from bibidi bobidi boutique.... The exit line would look like a rainy Halloween night in Greenwich Village, Manhattan! ;)

I like Popeye but I think it's a tiny bit overrated. Am I just not remembering the same ride here? LOL. It's better than Kali for sure though. But we have a UNIVERSAL forum.

How close is this expansion to being greenlit? Is this something we should just file away for a while or does this have the chance of happening by the 50th?

Just caught up on this forum, so this may read as out of date. If I am reading Marni correctly, Splash Mountain could have a new theme in a few years. This makes sense considering the source material and its blatantly racist content, so much that Disney will not release it on Blu-Ray. I would be okay with giving the 25 year old attraction a refurb with Woody and Pals. As for expansion plot, we could only hope we could get another E-ticket like RSR over there. Pixar is cool and all, not my favorite IP, but it works for updating an attraction and building a mini-land. For the most part it seems people enjoy Test Track, so why not have the new and improved version in MK. A top notch attraction in an unused space...I'd take anything at this point.

Wow. First- not blatantly racist. Walt specifically hired a second screenwriter to go fix up things so it would not be that. Whether or not he was successful is a matter for debate.

Second- how, EXACTLY, would you theme a log flume ride to Woody & Pals so that it works?

Where did Marni suggest that Splash was getting rethemed?

I agree with @Matt_Black. If you want blatant racism, you'd be better served by Birth of a Nation or even Gone with the Wind. Song of the South was made with the best intentions, from everything I've read about its development. And it features some the most charming animation the studio ever produced. I think the characters can stand on their own without necessarily being associated with the film in which they originated.

"Song of the South is RACIST! It's so offensive it was banned!" is a knee-jerk reaction, popularized by the internet. Give the film a watch. It's no masterpiece for sure, and is a bit sappy in parts, and suffers from the admittedly mundane/vague plot involving the human characters. But it does feature some wonderful performances, namely James Baskett as Uncle Remus-who is just a delight, and everything that character should be. He also voices Brer Fox, and a host of others-he was just a ridiculously talented man. And the songs are wholly enjoyable. So much so, I actually hunted down a record and ripped the audio to my computer. For me, the questionable/dated elements are vastly outweighed by the good. And remember: The film doesn't say it outright really, but Uncle Remus and his companions are share croppers, not slaves. A really important distinction to make: At one point Uncle Remus leaves the plantation, with no consequences whatsoever.

It also features seamless blending of live action/animation, which is impressive today, considering the available technology of the time. Really, if you consider yourself a fan of the Disney, you do owe it to yourself to see it at least once. (Not that I'd ever encourage acquiring any media illegally. Never, never.)

Indeed. Part of the problem is that one of the critiques of the time claimed it took place during the slavery era instead of the Reconstruction period*, and the person who wrote hadn't even seen the film but instead was working off of notes an assistant took while watching it.

*Not that the Reconstruction Period was all that great, either, but it was certainly better than the period before or the Jim Crow era that came after.
