Pop Century Phase 2 to be torn down?

Just a quick note, and perhaps someone can confirm, but elsewhere peeps are talking about having mailed Disney Guest Communication and gotten the response that the second phase would not be completed and would be torn down. Also, notices to guests of major work at Pop Century for September (not to mention the signs at the resort entrance are being changed right now and behind tarps).

So i guess that's over, no?

Wow, I really hope it's not true. I would love to see POP completed. I was an opening day guest of the Classic Years, and I would love to be an opening day guest of the Legendary Years too.

I wish they would have finished but I would rather see it torn down and relandscaped then have it looking like where they tested Nuclear bombs in the dessert.

I really enjoy the POP next to the ASM ..But I have imagined staying at a legendary POP part and frankly don't think it would be too much fun any way. I wish they could of built another value resort on the land but the unfinished buildings probably are in such bad shape from weather exposure and animals that they may now have to be torn down after sitting for 6 1/2 years. If they build another value resort on the cleared land , what would the theme you want be if they did ? Well we all know they will build it if they add another park to the resort.

this is a total surprise

when i was at the POP back in early december i had a conversation with someone highly placed in the POP management and i was told that Phase 2 was going to be made into both family suites and some DVC. now this was not to be an easy transition as they explained to accomplish this from an enginnering issue there would have to be considerable modifications to the existing framework. budgeting to do this had not yet been approved but it was expected to happen and construction begin late 2008 or early 2009. this person stressed that disney management had to make a decision soon because ordinary structure maintance has not been happening and if the project was delayed too much further then conversion would not be an economic feasibility.

so if indeed it has been decided to tear it all down then i guess management has either decided to 1) just walk away from it, which has a deeper meaning in that it would reflect management's view that the global economy is in/will be in a real downturn, OR 2) possibly inspection has turned up some nightmare structural problem

Even if they intend to finish the resort, they may have to tear down the unfinished buildings and start again. They've been sitting there, open to the elements for six years. The interior building materials that were never designed to be exposed to sun and rain have probably been damaged; metal components have rusted, fiberglass insulation deteriorates from UV light, etc. If anything inside has gotten wet (a certainty in that climate) there will be mold growth that will be almost impossible to eradicate without tearing out every porous material in the building, such as drywall, wood members, carpets, and insulation. Then every surface will have to be treated to kill remaining mold spores. The roofs and air conditioning systems, if installed, are already 6 or more years into their 20 year lifespan. Finally, some of the systems that were code-compliant 6 years ago when they were installed are no longer compliant and will have to be replaced.

In the end it may be more cost effective to just start all over again than to correct these problems.

According to this video they are nothing but concrete structures with the plumbing stub outs and pipes in them...I wouldn't think it would be that difficult to continue construction. Concrete won't rot...:p

That's pretty cool, and at the same time, kinda creepy. It looks like everything on Earth was wiped out except for the building. It also reminded me of some kind of horror movie setting. I was waiting for a guy in a mask to pop out. Haha.

Oh my gosh! How creepy! And why on earth is that sprawling facility just sitting there with no security presence and no perimeter fence placed up around it?

Or was the person who took this video a security CM who was there as part of his job?

If this is true, and Im really hoping it isnt but the opposite, then pop half century needs to be renamed pop half century. I wish they had finished it too, it is kinda bad show for the buildings to just be there, looking all run down and stuff, but I wish they'd do whatever they needed to do to fix it back up. Instead of building all these DVC, I wish they just finish pop half century and make it pop century resort.
