Rumor Pixar's Coco coming to the Mexico Pavilion

Let's not get on a Remember Me/Coco vs. This is Me/The Greatest Showman discussion please. I've seen so many over Internet, whether one deserved it more or not, both were good songs, we're all entitled to our opinions and liking one more, but now that is said and done there's no point on it, let's just appreciate their differences, their success, and their greatness!

"Remember Me" was a great song and all, but I really think "This is Me" should have taken the award (sorry for that little Kayne moment). Anyways, the Lopez/Anderson-Lopez team are now 2-for-2 when it comes to winning awards for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song)... would be crazy being their kids... I mean, to be the kids of the couple that wrote the music to Frozen and Coco? Then you grow up and realize that your dad also helped write the music to two of the funniest modern musicals (Book of Mormon and Avenue Q)?
And don't forget Finding Nemo the Musical as well as "Big Blue World" also being used at The Seas. Sure they're not from Oscar-winning blockbusters, but pretty cool to be in two Disney parks for the last decade, and who knows how long into the future. Like "Remember Me" or not, it is pretty unreal the success they have had.

Coco is a great movie with tons of heart that could fit so well in Epcot. I still fear that it will create a Frostrom situation where the pavilion can't be enjoyed by anyone without a FP. If they could work out an entrance that comes in from the outside of the building and then exits into the existing pavilion, I might be able to get on board.

No
But in all honesty I don't get a lot of the winners or even the movies nominated for awards... So what do I know....

Ohh, I agree... it seems like every year I have seen fewer and fewer of the movies nominated for best picture (and in some cases, I've never heard of the movies at all!)

Rewrite the Stars is consistently the one in my head (and I’ve only heard that song three times).

Showman was filled with catchy songs for sure... there were many good choices but I ultimately feel that "This is Me" was chosen for its social implications.

Let's not get on a Remember Me/Coco vs. This is Me/The Greatest Showman discussion please.

Even though I thought "This is Me" was the better standalone song, I can't argue of the importance of "Remember Me" to Coco. I mean, that song was a MAJOR plot device in the movie and the movie certainly wouldn't have been so emotional without that song. I can think of few/no other non-musical movies with a single song that was so important to the plot...

You know what Iger similarly said wasn’t a franchise 10 years ago? Ratatouille.

Yeah. But I think Franchise in Iger’s mind has come to mean any post film incremental revenue. Rat became an unexpected big consumer products franchise. Even if it was one and done from a theatrical perspective.

Coco has limited post film revenue opportunity. But still is a ‘brand ambassador’ in the same way that Saludos Amigos / 3Cab were.

Perhaps, but you gotta believe that every Nov 2 there’s going to be some nice Coco branded sugar skull moichendising!

Im glad coco was recognized and it was a quality film..

But please, academy, no more oscars for the Lopez twins (are they married, twins, weird high school soulmates like the breakfast club?...I can't tell) anymore...

...those were the two most cringe worthy acceptance speeches I've ever seen...just terrible and that's saying something given Pixar over the years..

They are married... Why would you suggest they're twins or anything but spouses?

And they deserve every Oscar they have. They are an incredible composer and lyricist team; any future wins would be because they wrote another fantastic piece. Why wouldn't you wish them more success?

I figured...I just never looked them up...

They bungle the acceptance speeches...that's all. I give them their due for their craft...

If I recall, they did a little rhyme thing for frozen where they asked for a sequel? That's tacky...no need for the nickers to get knotted.

I hope they're working on an El Día de los Muertos float for the Halloween Parade.

Or a new Land incorporating Halloweentown, El Día de los Muertos. Perfect for a revived phase 3 in DHS or plopped next the the HM when they remove RoA.

The first one: quote possibly

The second: not at all likely.

...its been a couple years since I saw anyone refer to "Phase: Me" or "Phase: More" at mgm...that made me chuckle 😜

I don't know that Rat has become a big consumer products franchise since its release. Are Disney Stores really still stocking Ratatouille merchandise? The reason I think we're getting a Rat ride now at Epcot almost entirely comes down to the fact that the film was a huge hit in France around the same time they desperately needed a new theme park attraction over there. Fast forward to the present, and they want to slot more IP-based rides into Epcot, have a France pavilion, and a popular ready-designed attraction based on a France-themed IP that can be easily cloned. It does seem to have proved one of the more merchandisable attractions in Paris, though, which probably has helped and I'm guessing they will sell plenty of Remy plushes and chef hats.

This is why I can't imagine them coming back to Coco in the same way 5 or 10 years down the track unless it develops a particularly strong following or an international park asks for a Coco ride and they can share the costs somehow.

Yeah...I think the analysis of ratatouille has officially gone beyond the obvious...

The ride is being built because it's a clone...plain and simple.

Agreed, I think saying 'huge' was an overstatement, more like unexpected. But it is consistent and Remy has become a symbol for foodies and that drives merchandise sales.

I agree with you, I don't see a on-going path for Coco to bring in revenue (outside of being a holiday TV/Streaming special). There wasn't enough unique in Coco to hang their hats on from a merchandise perspective (at least not without being able to be legally copied) and it really isn't able to carry sequels. So if Coco takes over Mexico, it will be purely as a brand ambassador and not as a Franchise IP that is expected to have additional life.

can't stop myself....... they seem to keep going around and around on this huh? ;)

:joyfull:

Good one, lol

And that they do, actually. It's interesting they keep going back and forth. Would love someday to finally hear the reasoning's behind decisions besides vague comments from those who know. I know they can't say much now, not saying that, but when these things either happen or don't it would just be fun to know more about the back and forth. At least for me I'm curious about the decision process. But they seem like a mess at the moment not sure what they want to do or where they want to put the money.
