Pirates refurb dates released

Thanks for writing this. I've develepod an affinity for in depth Disneyland history that goes beyond "there's a spider on the glass in the ballroom", and posts like this are awesome to read.

Do you think there'd be demand for a thread that goes through and analyzes the ride as awhole- from conception, to the changes that it's undergone over the years? Could be a fun rival to the Long Forgotten thread on Micechat

Are we sure all of those photos @TROR posted are from DL? Could some of them have come from Florida and Tokyo? Were all three auction scenes ever the same, or were there subtle differences?

No one withered away, but many were bothered by it, which has been stated here repeatedly on different threads since the announcement was made last year. Even Walt Disney questioned it thinking it might be crossing a line for Disneyland. It sure would be nice if we'd could stop glossing over legitimate issues some people had with the way the original auction scene was portrayed.
I never heard one peep of complaint or protest until Disney announced they were changing it.

There are a few differences between the versions (in the refurb). Disneyland's has a cantina behind the scene whereas the others have closed shutters. Florida and Tokyo's have the fat woman's jewelry being auctioned off, while Disneyland's has her chickens being auctioned off

There definitely are definitely subtle differences but as far as the figures and their characteristics go they're all the same.

Just for an example, here's a picture of Disneyland Paris' (old) redhead

Notice the way the hand is in front of her hair instead of behind it.

Here's Walt Disney World's version where she is far less dolled up.

All three of these dresses are also slightly different as are their necklaces.

I dunno, maybe opinions are being over-emphasized here. Can't a person question something without stating it verbally? I always thought the scene was odd, but certainly not enough to flat out protest it on a discussion board, and I assume that was true for many people. At some point someone at Disney with decision making powers felt this was the right time to strike the scene, and I'm fine with that decision. I don't see it as anything to get upset about.

WELP! Time to completely change the thread to something unrelated (Great analysis Tror BTW).
About the new scene... I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority here, but I actually enjoyed the water fall effect. Ignoring the awful Davy Jones projection. It acted as a screen between the two segments which created a sense of surprise and awe at the opening to the cave. Without it, you can see ALL the way to the ship battle scene from the caves. This removes a bit of the grand reveal of that huge show scene. I would have enjoyed it if they kept the waterfall, got rid of the Davey Jones projection, and added the new scene. That would be IDEAL in my personal opinion.
I actually liked the mist waterfall affect also, even if it became quickly old-fashioned (Davy Jones is another story). That being said I'm not that worried about it being gone because the new pirate figure still serves as a visual "time travel" point. But the waterfall worked pretty well as a "time curtain" I think.

This is more about the theme of Pirates rather than a history of the physical attraction itself, but you should really read this if you haven't already. It should be required reading for any serious theme park fan: http://passport2dreams.blogspot.com/2011/08/fire-in-night-pre-eminent-attraction-as.html

I find it baffling that the new pirate skeleton is not Johnny Depp.

Especially since the whole ride focuses around the danger and curse that surrounds the treasure.

Showing jack at the end celebrating and unpunished sort of contradicts that since it gives off the impression of a happy ending.

Having that skeleton be jack would at least show that that isn't so.

But, the new one fits in well with the rest of the animatronics and it's a great effect and I'm not gonna complain about not having more jack in the ride.

He was satisfied with the final result, though.

From Claude Coats: “We added the auctioneer scene kind of late...He [Walt] came in one time and even said, ‘This will be all right, won’t it?’ He was just a little doubtful of auctioning off the girls. Was that quite ‘Disney’ or not? We added some other signs around, Buy a Bride...that augmented the auction scene as though it was a special big event...the way the girls were done it’s not an offensive scene at all...

So just watched a ride through of WDWs POTC and no wonder why so many say DLs is better. No bayou, no talking skull, shortened caverns, one drop and no armory scene? I think I knew most of these facts but had never watched a ride though.

I do like the placement of their one drop though.

MK’s version has a talking skull. They put it back in last year, unless they took it back out? They used it as a tool for picture-taking. I remember it looking very cartoony. Hated the voice as well.

MK's PotC is like an abbreviated highlights reel of Disneyland's.

It’s probably an old video. Our talking skull isn’t the original X atencios voice anymore is it?
