News Pirates of the Caribbean closing for refurbishment in February for new auction scene

If I didn't know what was there before, it's fine.

Losing Frees is jarring though. I don't like that at all.

I don't mind the We Wants the Rum chants, they could have quietly thrown in a 'we wants the redhead' and like others suggested, the Red Head turns the gun up in the air and fires. But then that could open up another can of the PC police descending on the attraction ....

Again, if it I didn't know what was there, it's fine. But I know what was there. I was willing to give it a chance, but I'm more disappointed than anything. It was too safe. They needed to do a little more here and I maybe could have given some things a pass. Personally I'm a bit disappointed they didn't change it MORE. They should have.

And I saw a picture of the Redhead up close. Why does she have what looks like BROWN hair?

Personally, I liked the mermaid section and the old effect that rarely worked (I know that effect has long been gone). Made it a bit more creepy. I didn't necessarily mind that but I know anything being touched, for some, is a no-no. Personally we have the weakest Pirates so what more can they do? Jack's addition was not for the better in 2006. I'd take classic Pirates anyday but at this point just put in the Shanghai boat ride. They clearly think anything old is icky.

I honestly didn't care about this change at all, but after hearing the terrible new dialogue I guess I'll jump on the bandwagon.

This was such a no-brainer: have the auctioneer try to sell items, chickens, etc. Drunk pirates: "No, we wants the redhead!" Redhead: *fires gun over their heads to shut them up*

I can't believe they missed the mark so badly.

There seems to be little respect for "Classic Disney Imagineering" in Florida.
I'd argue that a lot of it is absolutely deserved.

In my mind, this is in direct competition with the interactive queue and new Hitchhiking Ghost effects at the Haunted Mansion as most offensive/unnecessary.

The new market scene-the centerpiece of the attraction-is basically the "Star Wars Special Edition" of refurbishments for me. They wanted to make the Redhead strong and independent, but they instead gave us Geena Davis from Cutthroat Island.

i'm kind of torn without seeing it in person- first, the scene looks largely broken except for the redhead and the auctioneer- there are so many people/objects that don't seem to move.

The lines feel very simplified, almost child like now. They are fighting over hens that lay eggs...and she says all they want is rum...perhaps they could have been more creative? And some of the lines are so similar to the original scene- I would have been fine if they changed the scene completely...not "overlay"...

I love seeing pirates who are torturing a person in an illegal act, drunk and setting the village on fire but arguing over hens...

HauntedPirate,

Sorry you feel that way. I watched the video before seeing people's reactions and was actually impressed with the turnout. Whether or not the old way was disrespectful I always welcome new life being breathed into an attraction. The new script feels playful to me and fits rather nicely. For those that frequent the parks, changes are always a love/hate situation as seen by the varied opinions of the board. I offer a hearty congrats to the creative team for what I feel is a seamless and impressive plot twist.

Right? It wasn't that hard.

A lot of people are confused by the idea of pirates auctioning items to other pirates. It makes sense to me.

How else would they distribute the loot amongst the crew? Split the grandfather clock into 20 equal parts?

It makes sense to let the crew members bid on the items they want (rather than fighting it out). This held true for the "bride" auction, and it holds for the current one.

Because the whole point of the changeover is to get away from human trafficking.

Geena Davis! That is who the "redhead" (she has brown hair) looks like to me

I was never under the impression that all the pirates in the ride were part of the same crew anyway, what with there already being some of them in the prison cells and the ride showing evidence of the pirates being in constant conflict/competition with each other.

If the woman isn't being auctioned off and is just another pirate then the pirates would just be drunkenly hitting on her. Is that really much different than Donald chasing women all over Mexico?
In the context of an auction, and given that everyone knows what the original scene was about?
Absolutely.

That's the whole problem with the PC mentality. Doing good got no end. We are fine with corpses, pirates torturing a man, burning a town, Stealing food, Drunken murder...but women being sold to pirates in a comical way? THATS TOO FAR!!!

Is anyone else annoyed beyond belief how they keep trying to sell this change:

"Just as Walt Disney embraced and encouraged Disney Parks to “keep moving forward” since the opening of Disneyland Park in 1955, Walt Disney Imagineering has introduced many new characters at Pirates of the Caribbean attraction over the years."
