Pirates of the Caribbean a kid's ride?

I partially blame Disney's marketing these days. Every WDW commercial we get up here are cutsey commercials showing parents with young kids riding dumbo, tea cups, and hugging Mickey. They don't show the badassery Disney is capable of like ToT. So in a way I can understand why most people assume Disney is a place for kids, but it comes at my expense. :brick:

I'm 27 years old and I still like getting pics with Mickey and hugging Mickey along with the other characters so can't be too kiddy on that one lol at least in my opinion.

Well see and that's the thing, his tune changed as soon as another person was around. It kind of went like this while I was at work:

"Disney World sucks! It's just for kids!"
"No, talk to John, he went with his 3 year old and complained she slowed him down"

John: "No, we went only for her. I'd never do it alone."

In other words he was probably embarassed that he had the nerve to enjoy that park and refused to admit it in front of skeptical people, unlike me.

The thing is he then went on a rant about how everything is for kids and nothing appeals to adults. I tried to explain stuff like Pirates, HM, Splash, stuff that is fun but as you get older is also something that you can appreciate with the theming and the attention to detail. His response was that had he gone to Disney as a teenager he'd have probably thrown things at a Pirates while on the ride.

I loved WDW as a teenager and even more as an adult and I fully could seperate the thrill park of Cedar Point in Ohio to WDW. I prefered WDW, still do, despite loving Cedar Point. So I don't get the ones who don't. But if you want to pick on Peter Pan, Snow White, Dumbo, Mad Tea Party and stuff and call them rides directed at kids then go ahead. I still love them, but how in the world can a person figure Pirates is directed at kids. To me I've always felt it was a ride for EVERYONE. It is commonly thought to be the most popular ride in WDW.

I know a person or two like your co-worker; say one thing when they are around just you and then another thing when someone else gets in on the conversation. Not necessarily a Disney thing in my case, usually more music related (tell you they like a certain band and then cut the band down when others are in the room with you). What can you do though. Just let them hang themselves out in the breeze I guess! :hammer:

As for the Disney aspect...on a personal level, I have only been as an adult. Never experienced WDW for the first time until 2005, when I was 34. My wife had been as a child a few times and my kids were 8 and 13 on that first trip. And I can tell you we ALL immediately fell in love with the place! Sure, there are some rides or attractions you might not like as much as others, but you are going to get that anywhere you go. Even my mother-in-law, who came with us our first three trips and doesn't ride many of the attractions, LOVES the place! It is more the atmosphere that surrounds you while on Disney property. Whether it is at one of the resorts, or visiting Downtown Disney, or at one of the parks. Disney just KNOWS how to cater to every demographic! Like I said in my earlier post, there is pretty much something for everyone.

And as for Cedar Point...live maybe 3 hours away up here and have been just as many times as I have been to WDW. Haven't been in years though, and most of my trips there were when I was either a teenager or in my 20's. It is a GREAT amusement park, don't get me wrong, but if you are not a coaster enthusiast, which I am not, it just doesn't hold the same excitement for me as a Disney vacation. Now even my best friend and my wife, both of whom are HUGE coaster fans, would tell you they prefer WDW to Cedar Point any day of the week. Again, that is just mine and their opinions, but even as middle aged adults, we still consider WDW better suited towards us with MUCH more to do than just some pretty wicked roller coasters! :p

While I LOVE going to Disney with my children and seeing how excited they get and watching the amazing expressions on their faces, I also LOVE Disney. I love the atmosphere and the music and I also love watching the people and the families and hearing all of their excitment. My husband and I try to get one night to ourselves each trip. Our kids go to a kid club and we hit the parks.
This Friday my best friend of close to 30 years and I are going to Disney for 5 days, just us,to celebrate her upcoming nuptials. It's her second time around and she didn't want a bridal shower and we have kind of passed the bachlorette party age so while figuring out a vacation getaway we decided that we would have the most fun at Disney! We are probably more excited than our kids usually are, counting down the days, talking about what days to go where and what shows are a must. It's true that not everyone loves Disney. One of my brother-in-laws think it's the worst place in the world, while one owns a DVC and the other goes once a year. I am usually shocked to hear when people think Disney World is an awful place, but I do hear it enough and like others have shared on this thread, just less people on line.

So who is the crazy one? Him or me (us on here)? I get it how he was embarassed to have the audacity to enjoy Disney on his own merit once other people entered the room but how do you explain Pirates being a kid's ride?

How about this? You are right. Pirates is not a "kid's ride". But he is probably in the majority opinion.

My teenage son complains a bit when I drag him on IASW [I still do it, but he whines ], never POTC. He gets much more upset when I do my occasional solo trips. Like in two weeks! :king:

Your teenage son gets my sympathy on that point. Drag him to the Magic Kingdom, yes. Small World for teenaged boys, no. I would never do that to my teenaged son. :dazzle: Hopefully, when I am old, he won't do that to me!

Pirates is a ride that is enjoyed by the young and old alike. Its one of my faves and I wouldn't be ashamed to say so.

Agreed! This ride has aged well and the additions of elements from the very successful Pirates of the Caribbean movies have helped keep it relevant.

He just doesn't want to be seen or heard saying anything about liking Disney.

What a shame... only talking about Disney and look how fast he gives into 'peer-pressure'. Dont want to see what he does when it comes to more serious things.....

Either way... I like this quote:

All things Disney: "If you have to explain, they wouldn't understand".
:D

Pirates is a family ride. Even though, every child is different. Last year my youngest LOVED it... we got on it 3 or 4 times! This year, not so much!!! :lookaroun Cried the whole time... even told us to take her home!!! :hammer: But its definietly a 'do not miss' ride for us.

when we were growing up pirates was always my dads favorite ride and he made us save it for last. once i was older we would go do it first because it had become a "thing" and to this day we call my dad as soon as we're on it just to rub it in that we didn't save it for last. also when my youngest was 16 she totally redid her bedroom (from the flooring up) based on the idea of "what captain jacks cabin on the black pearl would look like". very adult pirate. she's now 21 still living at home (in grad school) and hasn't changed the room a bit. pirates and disney is for everyone. my next trip is for my sisters 40th birthday and we're not bringing ANY kids...just a little tequila lol.
