PHOTOS - Downtown Disney upgrades continue

They're doing a lot of ground work there as well. I noticed a walled off area next to WOD and on the side of the Lego store. I was excited to show my parents (who haven't been in a while) the new Lego sculptures outside but some of them you could hardly see or get near to because of the walls.

Hmmm. Well all those folks hoping for the clubs to reopen should probably find encouragement in this. That they are spending money upgrading the fountains behind PH may mean they intend to have that walkway available to route guests around the former PI.

I think this is the wrong decision if it is true but this change may mean they intend to reopen the clubs. Much more than anything else they have done recently.

Bring back Hyperion Wharf!

Bringing back a couple of clubs really wouldn't be such a bad idea and could still be part of the bold new vision if done correctly.

The good news in all of this is that some of the acts on PI have signed new 1 year contracts.

So as of right now, one more year of plywood stages covered in tin with a couple guys with instruments next to a mic! Who needs the world class entertainement we once had on PI?

And why use the empty air conditioned buildings when we can have our guests and acts stand in the heat and humidity every day.

1 more year featuring...NO PROGRESS!

That's true Disney magic, folks.

Interesting... I am wondering where this announcement is that Staggs teased in his response to the Expo. How big, exciting, and innovative can it really be? I don't see why there needs to be a huge unveiling....

He'll get back to you (and everyone else) when he has a clue himself.

But I wouldn't use the term 'Hyperion Wharf' since it is dead. The fact Staggs himself didn't use the term once during his Blog post a few months ago spoke volumes. As did the fact he DID say Pleasure Island, which really is a place that no longer exists.

Whatever winds up there (beyond the grass and mulch) will likely keep the PI moniker.

***NOTE: This absolutely does NOT mean the AC or anything else that was at TSFKaPI will return even if its old name does.

I don't think it was ever the intention nor would it be practical. They simply do not have the parking available today that would be necessary by a major expansion happening all at once.

I really think this is the primary reason they have opted to go slow. (cue the usual comments from the house cynics:rolleyes:) The last thing the current tenants need is their customers fighting for a parking space beyond the current circumstances. It would be very easy for Disney to cross that line in the development of DTD that parking could become extremely difficult.

To fully realize the promise that the Hyperion Wharf concept offered they need to start building parking garages.

This is easy, just put a bid out for a smaller garage and allow the builder the revenue generated by the garage for a certain number of years if they finance it. Wouldn't cost the mouse a dime. Once one section of garage opens another section of parking lot can close to add another section of garage. The entire process could continue until there was adequate parking for any future growth considered for DTD. And if done right it would increase DTD's footprint and allow for even more expansion into the current parking lot. Possibly even a for a hotel and/or transportation hub.

JT, they are not moving slow.

They are not moving at all. No positive progress. Just some store shuffling.

Two full service restaurants and at least three new shops have opened since the clubs closed. I believe two other shops are opening or being upgraded soon. And then there is Splisville which the consnsus here says will be at capacity every night.

Parking is the main factor for the "go slow" transformation. I am quite sure of it.

So the latest reason they are doing nothing is lack of car parking? Do you read back the c**p you post before you hit Submit Reply? That is the most stupid thing I have ever read on this forum!

The car parking is made worse by all the people parking for free and busing to the parks. One easy way to cut the number of cars is bring in a parking fee and get free parking validated in the stores and restaurants if you make a purchase.
The thing is parking isn't such a huge issue the lots behind cirque I have never seen full even in summer or maybe I am lucky. If it was that bad they could think of a million quick solutions. How about overflow parking at Typhoon Lagoon with a shuttle bus? They will have thought of every option and in the scale of of the money Disney spends building a parking garage won't kill them if they need one.

Obviously you do not actually read something before responding. Here is what I said....

Obviously when you claim they are doing "nothing" it is disingenuous or is proof you do not know what you are talking about. Don't bother responding as I won't engage in what is obviously an attempt on your part to start a flame war.

They are doing something, but I think what's being argued is that additions don't equal design. We're looking for a high design, a concept, something that says Disney. Adding a couple non-themed stores and a bowling alley (which I'm excited about personally) here and there across the whole DTD area doesn't reflect that.
