photo editing programs

do we all have some type of editing program on our computers?

i was thinking that maybe for one of the challenges that we could reverse the way we do it.

i would be required to do a paper one, and you all could do a digital one.

but it won't work if someone doesn't have a program.

let me know if you have a program and would like to try swapping.

even if you don't have one, there are some that are free for downloading, and some are good for 30 day trials. if you are willing to give it a try, let me know.

Yep, I have Photoshop Elements, but have never used it. Might be kind of fun to try as long as the week we do it I actually have time to learn something new.

I think this is a great idea! I have elements 5.0 (worth every penny if you need one) and I'm learning new things about it all the time.

I have Photoshop 7.0. Might be a couple years old but boy is it nice to have.

now this is the program i want! but it is expensive. i was talking with my brother and he said he might try to get it for me.

i have received 2 offers for it at a very reduced price (because i have elements 4.0) but when i got the offers i had no money.

I just got Photoshop 5.0 and so far I like it. This is the first time I have ever tried to do anything with my pictures and it has been fun. There is so much to learn, but they don't make it to hard.:)

i have had elements for probably 1 1/2 yrs, and i have really used it.

but, not to its fullest extent. there is just so much in these programs, the only thing missing is the mind's creative imagination.

do you know how many erasers choices you have? have you ever experiemented with them? for those that haven't, try it. go all the way to the bottom of the drop down eraser box, try some of those.

you can put an image up in the layers palette,
create new layer above it
fill new layer with color of choice
choose eraser (play with those eraser's and size)
start erasing from the inside area of your image and work out.

you will see your image (since it is below the colored layer)
by playing with those erasers you will get a really neat frame around your image.

i did not realize it, but that is a basic lesson. for those that know about those erasers, just ignore. i had no idea til just a couple days ago.

the same goes for the paint brush, so many choices there.

also for those just learning or who may not know, you can add texture to your plain solid color layer which then can become your textured background paper.

my daughter just downloaded 5.0 so i have been teaching her as she goes along. she has never used a program at all.

if you have any questions, ask i will hopefully beable to answer them. if not, i will not hesitate to say so. i am in no way an expert. but i do know the basics.

I haven't been hanging out in the Scrapbooking forums in a while, but I use Photoshop CS3 and it's more of a graphic design thing for me. These challenges sound like fun.

eagles that's a great explanation, thanks. I've just learned how to make small photos, put mulitple ones on a 4x6 print, and then I send them off to be printed. It allows me to put SO many more photos on a page!

I don't think anyone would mind tips for elements. Maybe we could start a thread of easy photoshop lessons we know or learn.

this sounds to me, (i could be wrong), but, it sounds like you were not using layers? i have had many friends ask about that, it seems that is the first thing that people have a problem with. but once you get the layers thing down, the fun starts.

remember that you can click and drag the layer to move it up or down, below or above other layers.

one piece of advise that i wish to share however, is this:

when you bring up a picture, please make >save as..and rename it, and work on the "save as" picture. this will ensure you have your original picture safe and sound.

i have never had a problem with my originals, but this is something that was shared to me, as the most important thing to do, so i will pass it along.

This is probably the most important tip for anyone new to any of the Photoshop products. I actually burned a backup of all my photos lately just in case I mess something up. It can happen quicker than you can blink.

Thanks for the tip eagles!! It is a great reminder to all of us.

Eagles you are right, I don't mess around with layers much. I totally mistyped multiples up there too, just as an aside!

It was a breakthrough for me because I wanted some smaller images on my pages. Some of my 4x6 photos I just couldn't trim down much. SO now I know how to save the whole image smaller and the real breakthrough, how to have them printed that way. I don't print my own pics. I assume when I upload an image to be printed - they're going to print it 4x6 no matter what size the image is. So I wasn't sure how to have an image printed in say 2x3 or 3x3. Now I get it! Does that make sense?

Changing colors with layers just confuses me. I ready how you can change they colors in the layers and then when you flatten them, the image is nicely saturated. The problem is - I have no idea how light/dark/colorful to make the individual layers!

I'm trying to learn.:D

to your first paragraph. something i found by playing. crop your image to focus on what ever you want, save for web, play with it, and then print that. the image you print now will be larger. i thought that was something cool. i print my own. i guess there would also be other ways to save and print things, its a matter of what works the best for you. (i believe).

your second paragraph...i have no idea what you said.
are you using the parts of one picture and making them layers and changing colors? then flattening?
..could you give an example of what you mean? what is on each level?

because i don't understand, why when you flatten, the image is different then when not flattened. (does that make sense).

you should beable to see exactly what it looks like on the big active work space area.

what looks good to one may not look good to another, one man's junk, is another man's treasure. you adjust to where you like it.

this probably did not help much.

if you ever want to walk thru something, layers, colors, while you are actually working on something, i have aol im. pm me and i will give you my screen name.

now if you are actually changing colors, maybe you could teach me, because i have never used the replace color, and i don't know how to do that. again, i am not sure that is what you are referring to.

  Okay I laughed when I read that. I'm not sure I had any idea what I wrote!! I am on my way out the door right now. Tomorrow I'll try to find a tutorial I was following and see if that explains it better.
