Trip Report Phil getting swallowed by a shark is so September. It's time for a November Disney trip report!!!

NOTE - November 7, 2016 - For those of you just looking for the Disney portion of this trip report, it begins on Page 11. If you're looking for the Key West portion, begin on Page 5. PS - Original title of this thread was "Phil got swallowed by a Great White Shark - it's time to go back!"

NOTE - September 9, 2016 - For those of you who don't feel like scrolling through the "pre-trip report" stuff, I totally get it and the Key West portion of the actual trip begins on Page Five. The Disney Old Key West portion will begin in November. :) I'll give the page that starts on too. Now back to your regularly scheduled pre-trip report for those who want to read all of the posts.
***************************************************************************

Well, not exactly.

Or should I say, not yet.

Or should I say, Phil is actually the Great White Shark.

Ummm.... what exactly am I saying here, or trying to say, totally unsuccessfully?

Well, here goes.

For those of you who don't chat with us on the Chit Chat Thread, and damn you to all of you who don't (kidding! - come chat!), you will not really know how anti-Disney my partner Phil has been toward Disney since our last trip, which was last June. I'm not going to mince words - he has basically been a total jerk. Every time I bring up going back to Disney, he does something very similar to this:

The last time I brought it up, he said, and I quote, "I would rather be waterboarded than go back there!!!"

That can be arranged, is what I was thinking.

But wait! How can he possibly hate it so much when he acts like he loves it when he is there?? Your honor, I present to you the following evidence:

Biergarten.JPG

And this (if he's a little less happy here it's just cause there is no drink in his paw. :hungover:

Mexico.JPG

And this!

Boardwalk Villa.JPG

And this!!

Spoons.JPG

I could keep going all night, but you get the idea. I find him guilty of secretly liking Disney - at least once he gets there. This is not a tortured, miserable soul at a Disney park. He is having fun. So why all the pushback for going back?

Well, let me quote once again:

"I don't know why we have to go there all the time when there all all sorts of other places to go to!!!!"

Okay. Point taken. I didn't bring it up again for a while.

Then, a series of unfortunate events happened in very quick order, or actually just two that felt like a lot:

I got downsized (that means fired, due to budget cutbacks) from a job I had held for 19 years. Here is what was my incredible office:

Office 4.JPG

And then, soon after, our little cat, Spooky, started screaming in the middle of the night and we ran downstairs to find out what was going on, and the back half of him was paralyzed and cold. He wouldn't stop screaming. We rushed him as fast as possible to a 24-7 animal hospital and they told us that he had a sudden blood clot that had burst and paralyzed him and there was a 99.9% chance that there was no hope. We were basically forced to put Spooky to sleep. :(

Spooky hockey.JPG

Spooky snow.JPG
Spooky tub.JPG

The tears flowed like the River Jordan.

Yeah, it's been a rough patch folks.

But on the good news side, my contract got picked up by one of my previous job's competitors, and I was only out of work for 2 weeks. On the other hand, nothing can replace a sweet cat that didn't deserve to go in such a violent way. Where am I going with this?

Oh yes, that's right. You see, from my previous job, I got a small, but to me, significant severance package. People I tell about it laugh and say it's nothing, but to me, who has lived from paycheck to paycheck my entire life, I finally have money in the bank ---- but not for long if I have anything to say about it, dammit!!

This is my very long and meandering way of saying that I finally convinced Phil to go back to Disney, but only because I surprised him by telling him that for his birthday (on September 15), I was taking him to Key West. We've never been, and assuming that he does not get swallowed by the great white shark in the title of this thread, we are then doing a Key West-a-Palooza and we are going to be staying at Old Key West from November 1 - 4 for Food and Wine Festival.

Look! I themed our Fall! :)

I feel like this resort is totally out of the way of everything, but when I looked at the 25% discount offer that they currently have, I was able to book a one bedroom villa (!!!!) at Old Key West for $150.00 less than it would have been to book a standard room at the Contemporary. It was kind of like an offer I could not refuse.

Yeah, so three nights is basically just a tease, but as I told my pals on the Chit Chat thread (and again, why aren't the rest of you having fun there too??) , I'm going to use this as an excuse to demand a new trip for 2017. ;) And since the Philmonster is bound to throw a fit about that, I am going to search out that Bounce Back Offer as soon as I get to the room. :) If you want, I'll post the details/pics of the Key West trip in September prior to the November trip to the World.

Hope you are all having a great summer.

:D

A STAY AT FAKE KEY WEST, or DISNEY, I LOVE YOU - a mini trip report by Buddy Thomas - Part Six - in which pancakes are made, rides are ridden, and Phil commits the ultimate Disney sin

Obviously, by now, you guys know that I give Phil a pretty hard time on here. But he's actually a very good guy. He just absolutely does not get Disney. That's my nice way of saying that he hates Disney and that he tolerates it for me. But just barely. As evidenced by this very short trip.

But....in the good guy column......who can complain when they wake up to smell this cooking:

Pancakes cooking.JPG

Errr... okay - they actually look a little gross. But they were chocolate chip pancakes and I promise they were delicious! Here was the spread on our outside balcony (thank you again severance pay!):
Pancake breakfast served.JPG

That strange looking rectangular thing was a guava and cream cheese coffee cake that we were definitely not entitled to, especially as a side order to pancakes, and double especially since we were doing food and wine festival. But it was delicious all the same.

Soon afterwards, we waddled our fat selves away from the table and got ready for - The Magic Kingdom!!!

Through the magic of not having to wait of any bus for 45 minutes when you are reading a trip report, here we are!

Soldier Buddy.JPG

Look, I have turned into Gilbert Gottfried! I am Squinty Eyed Sally. The sun is so bright that I can barely see. Oh yeah, and PS - it is Christmas on November 2!!

And double PS - If you think that is water inside that water bottle, I have a wonderful bridge to sell you.

Of course, Phil did not wait long to commit his ultimate Disney sin:
Phil gun to head castle.JPG

That's right, that's right, he's using this opportunity to do the old gun to the head motion in front of Cinderella's Castle.

That's it. I think he now has to hang!

(On the bright side, look how empty the park is at like 1PM on November 2!!!)

Anyway, next we had a fast pass to Splash Mountain. I took a couple of selfies on there that are NOT ever going to be seen by human eyes anywhere, so please enjoy this picture of people who are not me on Splash Mountain instead:

Good times!

Next it was just about time for our reservation at the Skipper Canteen for lunch, but not before Phil demanded to climb through the Swiss Family Treehouse:

Trehouse Phil.JPG

Wait, is that an actual half smile? Is that a "watered down" Dole Whip in his hand?

Ya know, as I say, some questions are better left unanswered.

But anyway, now time for Skipper's Canteen or whatever it's called. The pictures that have been posted do not do this room justice, and neither do mine because at least the room I was in was a little dark. It is a gorgeous restaurant. The food quality was superb. And our waiter was funny and charming without being cloying, if that makes any sense. Just in quick order, here are some pics from the restaurant:

It was all amazing. Highly recommended. Go! And since it's only lunch time, that means that there are all sorts of more shenanigans coming your way tomorrow! See you then! :)

See what I did there? Covering up that ridiculous 40-something turkey neck? I think I'm just going to wear a ribbon of bubbles around my neck at all times from now on for the rest of my life.
If you want to look like Santa all the time.......

I'm glad you liked the Skipper Canteen, it was one of the best meals we had in June. I find it curious that Phil wanted to do the Swiss Family Treehouse, any reason why he demanded that?
He is all about "If I have to go somewhere for the 10 thousandth time, I have to do new things." Fair enough. We've never climbed that treehouse before, but honestly, really? That's what he wanted to do? Errgghhh.

The gun to his head pic is hilarious! I could totally see my boyfriend doing that! You should have made a photopass photographer capture that moment as well!!

And wasn't skipper canteen so yummy?!? I loved it there so much! Now if only they sold alcohol...

Can't wait to read more! :)
They might not "serve" alcohol", but a little Dasani water mixed in with a drink that is too frozen to drink never hurt anyone. ;)
If you notice, in that picture of food and drink at Skipper's, that Dasani water is right up next to my frozen drink at all times.

A STAY AT FAKE KEY WEST, or DISNEY, I LOVE YOU - a mini trip report by Buddy Thomas - Part Seven - in which a castle is lit and so are we.

So, immediately after lunch, we had a fast pass for Space Mountain, because nothing says digest your lunch calmly like getting on a roller coaster through outer space.

Space mountain.jpe

And after that, we wound down with a bit of Phil Mover, I mean People Mover.

Phil people mover.JPG

Then we had a little time before our next Fast Pass, so we decided to stop by Cosmic Rays for a little Frozen Lemonade. We had a bottle of water that needed to water some stuff down! And while we were there, I have definitively been able to answer the question about what is happening with the liquid cheese.

Add Cheese one dollar.JPG

I have no horse in this race, but I have no idea why a lot of people on here had a mental meltdown when they took this away. Of course, now it is back, but for a buck a serving, and that is kind of gross too. But this stuff is not even real cheese. It is, by most accounts: Cheese Whey, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Modified Food Starch, Cheddar Cheese (Cultured Milk, Salt, Enzymes), Sodium Phosphate, Salt, Natural Flavors, Monosodium Glutamate, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Vinegar, Color Added (Including Caramel Color, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6), Oleoresin Paprika.

On the other hand, that is a LOT of ingredients for a dollar, so you might be getting your money's worth. Maybe sign me up! ;)

Okay so we got our tarted up lemonades and off we went to the Mine Train.

Here is a train selfie of Mr. Gobbler Tom Turkey Neck. You can find me next week in your grocer's freezer.

And here is a picture of Phil:

Witch.JPG

Kidding, kidding, I kid Mr. Phil.

Next, it was over to Liberty Square, and before we went to the Haunted Mansion, we went to that Haunted Mansion shop where I never remember the name, but I do remember that everything was priced for millionaires only. Phil decided to try on a hat. I think it suits him. LOL.
Haunted Hat Phil.JPG

And then on to the mansion.

You guys are probably going to roll your eyes, but I never noticed the below before, probably because we always just walk right on instead of waiting in a 20 minute line, but I thought this was very cool:

Captain.JPG

Plus it leaks water and bubbles. So amazing.

Back to Fantasyland to have an audience with this dame:

Mermaid.JPG

Let's face it - it's not the greatest ride in the world, but it's a little fun all the same.

And by this point, it was getting dark, and all of a sudden we heard a lot of commotion going on at the castle. It was too early for fireworks, but it turns out that damned Elsa had shown up and decided to freeze the castle. Of all the nerve!! It's one thing to freeze Arendelle, but Kissimmee too?!? Sheesh.

Well, she actually did a great job:

No, socks pulled up is all in vogue again for some reason (although I agree with you 150%).
View attachment 175273

I think this became "fashionable" because of CrossFit. People who do CrossFit wear their socks like this. I have heard it is to keep from getting shins scraped during deadlifts. I have been doing deadlifts for 20+ years and yet to scrape a shin. I began seeing a lot of men wearing long socks when CrossFit was a really big thing. :)

THIS!!! So much THIS!!!
At the risk of sounding hipster, I was into CrossFit way before the time you couldn't shut people up about talking about Crossfit. We used in our wrestling workouts and it was great. I think the socks became just another "Look at Me" badge the cult had to identify kool-aid drinkers. Its right up there with the compression sleeves that run from your shoulders to your wrist. Just put a damn shirt on already and be done with it!

EDIT:
So sorry about the tangent!

Ok, this is probably because I'm sleep deprived and slightly hungover (yes, I know it's Wednesday- an old friend came back to my town last night and we sort of bar hopped for 5 hours and found amazing deals), but I thought that the BB8 cup being advertised was for the 'cheese' :depressed:
