Trip Report Phil getting swallowed by a shark is so September. It's time for a November Disney trip report!!!

NOTE - November 7, 2016 - For those of you just looking for the Disney portion of this trip report, it begins on Page 11. If you're looking for the Key West portion, begin on Page 5. PS - Original title of this thread was "Phil got swallowed by a Great White Shark - it's time to go back!"

NOTE - September 9, 2016 - For those of you who don't feel like scrolling through the "pre-trip report" stuff, I totally get it and the Key West portion of the actual trip begins on Page Five. The Disney Old Key West portion will begin in November. :) I'll give the page that starts on too. Now back to your regularly scheduled pre-trip report for those who want to read all of the posts.
***************************************************************************

Well, not exactly.

Or should I say, not yet.

Or should I say, Phil is actually the Great White Shark.

Ummm.... what exactly am I saying here, or trying to say, totally unsuccessfully?

Well, here goes.

For those of you who don't chat with us on the Chit Chat Thread, and damn you to all of you who don't (kidding! - come chat!), you will not really know how anti-Disney my partner Phil has been toward Disney since our last trip, which was last June. I'm not going to mince words - he has basically been a total jerk. Every time I bring up going back to Disney, he does something very similar to this:

The last time I brought it up, he said, and I quote, "I would rather be waterboarded than go back there!!!"

That can be arranged, is what I was thinking.

But wait! How can he possibly hate it so much when he acts like he loves it when he is there?? Your honor, I present to you the following evidence:

Biergarten.JPG

And this (if he's a little less happy here it's just cause there is no drink in his paw. :hungover:

Mexico.JPG

And this!

Boardwalk Villa.JPG

And this!!

Spoons.JPG

I could keep going all night, but you get the idea. I find him guilty of secretly liking Disney - at least once he gets there. This is not a tortured, miserable soul at a Disney park. He is having fun. So why all the pushback for going back?

Well, let me quote once again:

"I don't know why we have to go there all the time when there all all sorts of other places to go to!!!!"

Okay. Point taken. I didn't bring it up again for a while.

Then, a series of unfortunate events happened in very quick order, or actually just two that felt like a lot:

I got downsized (that means fired, due to budget cutbacks) from a job I had held for 19 years. Here is what was my incredible office:

Office 4.JPG

And then, soon after, our little cat, Spooky, started screaming in the middle of the night and we ran downstairs to find out what was going on, and the back half of him was paralyzed and cold. He wouldn't stop screaming. We rushed him as fast as possible to a 24-7 animal hospital and they told us that he had a sudden blood clot that had burst and paralyzed him and there was a 99.9% chance that there was no hope. We were basically forced to put Spooky to sleep. :(

Spooky hockey.JPG

Spooky snow.JPG
Spooky tub.JPG

The tears flowed like the River Jordan.

Yeah, it's been a rough patch folks.

But on the good news side, my contract got picked up by one of my previous job's competitors, and I was only out of work for 2 weeks. On the other hand, nothing can replace a sweet cat that didn't deserve to go in such a violent way. Where am I going with this?

Oh yes, that's right. You see, from my previous job, I got a small, but to me, significant severance package. People I tell about it laugh and say it's nothing, but to me, who has lived from paycheck to paycheck my entire life, I finally have money in the bank ---- but not for long if I have anything to say about it, dammit!!

This is my very long and meandering way of saying that I finally convinced Phil to go back to Disney, but only because I surprised him by telling him that for his birthday (on September 15), I was taking him to Key West. We've never been, and assuming that he does not get swallowed by the great white shark in the title of this thread, we are then doing a Key West-a-Palooza and we are going to be staying at Old Key West from November 1 - 4 for Food and Wine Festival.

Look! I themed our Fall! :)

I feel like this resort is totally out of the way of everything, but when I looked at the 25% discount offer that they currently have, I was able to book a one bedroom villa (!!!!) at Old Key West for $150.00 less than it would have been to book a standard room at the Contemporary. It was kind of like an offer I could not refuse.

Yeah, so three nights is basically just a tease, but as I told my pals on the Chit Chat thread (and again, why aren't the rest of you having fun there too??) , I'm going to use this as an excuse to demand a new trip for 2017. ;) And since the Philmonster is bound to throw a fit about that, I am going to search out that Bounce Back Offer as soon as I get to the room. :) If you want, I'll post the details/pics of the Key West trip in September prior to the November trip to the World.

Hope you are all having a great summer.

:D

Quick check in:

Today was.....weird. The airport was weird, the flight was weird, the vibe at EPCOT was very weird, and Phil was off the weird-ometor by 100%. Even this trip report is weird!! Old Key West is not weird, however. It is amazing so far. Back to you next week with the full report. But I'm here typing this on a couch in the living room of my one bedroom villa in Old Key West, while Phil is snoring in the other room, and I think that counts as pretty cool.....and also weird that I'm up so late! More soon. :)

Obviously I'm late to the party, but had to chime in before the next TR arrives on how much I loved your KW report - you are a wonderful writer. This was the first TR from you I've read and now I must hunt down any/all others. :inlove::inlove::inlove:

Even with the iguanas, heat, jellyfish and all, I adore the Keys almost as much as the Mouse - and I'm a diehard WDW fan. The drive for us is 4 hrs to KW and 3 hrs to the Mouse, so I'm always torn re: which way to point the car. I know it's probably sacrilege even saying that around here. :jawdrop:

But if you ever return, consider flying into Ft Laud, renting a convertible and driving just 2-3 hrs to stay in Islamorada or Marathon. Every key has a unique and marvelous character all its own. KW is great and we love Duval and nightlife, but it's one slice of the experience. So many people just visit KW and have no idea there's so much more.

You can easily day trip to KW from middle keys (90 min drive) or split your stay with a couple of nights upper/middle keys, then drive down to KW. (Bonus - hotel rates in middle/upper keys are much cheaper.) And there is nothing like the overseas hwy drive - you gotta do just once - it's breathtaking. And a lot more pleasant when it's 90 min vs 4 hours.

Visit May-July for AWESOME snorkeling conditions - few to no jellies!
Believe it or not, it's often more tolerable in May-July vs. Sept. Sept is when it's cooling down everywhere else on the planet - yet it's often Florida's most humid, disgustingly hot month.

Also check out the Hemmingway House next time: the tour guides are really good - they tell some fascinating stories about his life, loves, adventures - not dry or boring at all.

Agree - we stay sometimes in Marathon and sometimes Islamorada, and may take a day trip to KW. And sometimes we just stay in KW. Same drive times as you (we are in Oakland Park.)

Thanks for the nice words and for the travel tips. Much appreciated.

I should be starting the Disney portion of this trip report later tonight.

A STAY AT FAKE KEY WEST, or DISNEY, I LOVE YOU - a mini trip report by Buddy Thomas - A Prologue - in which I complain a lot and post a picture of princess ornaments

So, ladies and gentlemen........and those who have yet to decide.........here we are, the night before the most insane election of our lifetimes. I'm stressed beyond belief. I am climbing up and down the walls like a creature from a horror movie. I am going to go into a fetal position any second now. But hopefully it will all be okay. Somehow.

And to make myself believe this, I am going to go ahead and take us back one week ago, when at this very moment, I was packing to go on my incredible three week trip to Disney World.

Oh wait. Did I say three weeks? I, umm, must have been remembering this nice woman we met there who was on her first of three weeks there. She was so nice. Damn her to hell!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kidding. Err, just a little jealous because my trip was not even close to three weeks. It was three nights that felt like three hours.

So come with me if you will, as we venture back, a very long time ago, to November 1, 2016 - a simpler place and time where we had an entire week before the election instead of mere hours.

And in that innocent time, I give you this picture, which happened late in the trip....but that's just because what you are about to read is such a sh*t show that you are going to need a little brightness to keep your spirits up on this first......interesting day.

Princesses.JPG

Ahhh, yes. That's better. Who can worry about elections or a crazy first day of a Buddy Thomas trip report when you have ten thousand princess Christmas ornaments to look at?

Take a nice long look at that, because the crazy train is leaving.....NOW. All aboard!!!!!!! ;)

A STAY AT FAKE KEY WEST, or DISNEY, I LOVE YOU - a mini trip report by Buddy Thomas - Part One - in which I travel to Florida with a Phil Monster

So off we go.

November 1, 2016 - flight leaves just after 10:00 AM, so it looks like a 7:30 Long Island Railroad from Forest Hills to the Air Train.

Forest Hills sunrise.JPG

Air train.JPG

Who the hell is that queen? Anyway, she's very happy at the crack of dawn so more power to her, I guess.

Anyway, Phil soon arrived from his Glen Cove train, and we hopped on a very crowded Air Train to JFK.

As soon as I saw Phil, I knew he was in a bad mood. He is not a morning person. He is also not a Disney person. So - guess what happens when you make someone like that wake up at the crack of dawn to travel to Disney. This:

Sully.jpg

On top of all this, Jet Blue messed up our seats.

We had paid (or should I say, I had paid) $40.00 extra per seat for something called "More Space" and "More Speed".

The concept here is that you get whisked through security instantly in a special line (think Fast Pass) and then your seats are upgraded to ones with lots more space and toward the front of the plane. A few days before the trip, I decided to upgrade us to this, in part because I have the last few $$ of some severance pay (from my previous job) burning a hole in my pocket, and in part because I try to do anything to make sure Phil Monster is having a good time. Because when Phil Monster is not having a good time, no one is having a good time.

So - They upgraded us (a few days before the trip) to row 4 on the plane - two aisle seats next to each other. Hurray!!!

When we got to check in, that was not the case. Our seats were - One seat in the front row - aisle.

And one seat in the fourth row - center seat.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?

Yeah, I know, in retrospect it is totally no big deal, but at the time, I was like - what the hell? You lied about where you were going to put us, and I paid $80.00 extra to be jammed into a middle seat? Sheesh.

Anyway, guess who got the front row aisle seat:

Phil plane.JPG

Oh, he is so first class and elegant.

And let's see who is cramped into the tiny middle seat in row four of this so called "more space" area:

Buddy plane.JPG

Yes, I'm so happy!!!!!!!! NOT.

PS - If I ever make an expression like that again, I would appreciate it if one of you would please shoot me in the head.

Oh well. I guess if I have to sit in the dreaded middle seat, a little medication might help:

Plane drinks.JPG

All in all, the flight was great. Jet Blue has the tv screens, so after watching a few quick shows, we were on the ground, and on whatever that terminal train is called:

Buddy train.JPG

I always feel so bad for those people who are going home when we are getting on. And I simultaneously feel bad for us, knowing that we are going to be the ones going home soon too. Talk about the circle of life, LOL.

Anyway, we did Quicksilver Tours again for ground transportation again. They are freaking amazing. The only reason why we don't do Magical Express is because we need a liquo....ahem...grocery store stop....and Quicksilver always gives a free 30-minute stop.

So once we had all our supplies for this three night extravaganza, off we went. Oh, and in case I didn't mention it, or for those of you just tuning in, this is a trip at Old Key West.

Getting closer.

Look who isn't happy:

Phil car.JPG

I'm sorry. He looks like he is being dragged away to a prison chain gang or something. And unlike previous trips, he's not just faking it for the camera. At least not on this first day (his attitude will improve, I promise).

In the meantime, here is Lunatic Lu Lu having a fabulous time in the car:

Buddy car.JPG

Well someone's gotta have fun, right??? Hello there, Mr. 40-something year-old neck. Nice to meet you. You will soon be meeting all sorts of skin creams that will most likely do nothing to help your fatal demise.

But suddenly, while I was messing around taking horrifying selfies of my horrifying neck, this happened:

Hurray! We're here!

A STAY AT FAKE KEY WEST, or DISNEY, I LOVE YOU - a mini trip report by Buddy Thomas - Part Two - in which Phil gets pulled from the park

disney-s-old-key-west.jpg

And here we are.

We arrived at like 2:30 PM, and our plan had been to go to the room, drop off the groceries, unwind a bit, maybe go in the pool, and then head to EPCOT for Food and Wine and extra magic until 11PM.

Plans at Disney? Ha! Disney had other plans for us.

The room was not even close to being ready, and I totally understand that it does not have to be ready until 4PM. However, this is the first time ever....like ever, ever ,ever, ever that they had not had a room ready when we got there, no matter what time.

I could see that Phil was having an internal freak out so I told him to go wait outside:

the-entrance.jpg

The front desk guy was very nice but he said there were a lot of people with late check outs (remember this - it will come to haunt us later) and they just couldn't get us in right now.

Okay, no worries. Let's check our bags with bell services and go to EPCOT. Phil was about halfway toward a meltdown at this point, but I assured him that bell services had refrigerators and the groceries would be fine.

Also, I should add that one of the ways I sold this trip to Phil as that it was going to be nice and cool in November. Well, today, it was close to 90. Oooopps. My bad. Let's see what Phil was wearing to go to EPCOT:

Phil bus bench.JPG

Oh yes. Long sleeve shirt and jeans. Perfect for a hot Florida afternoon that we didn't know we were going to have. He looks like he has heatstroke already. Luckily, he has a libation from the Gurgling Suitcase in his hand to keep him company.

And here's me sitting on some sort of structure I'm probably not supposed to sit on - the new wait time signs told us the next EPCOT bus was 20 minutes away, so we had time for a little photo shoot:

Buddy Key West 1.JPG

By the way, that shirt is in honor of the people who lost their lives in the Orlando nightclub massacre. If only it was short sleeved. And worn with shorts, not jeans. In nearly 90 degree heat. In November. But still...I had to wear this shirt on my first trip back to Central Florida since it happened.

So, finally, after Phil and I were both reduced to gurgling puddles of sweat, the bus finally came, and off we went to EPCOT.

Can you tell how excited Phil is?

Phil Epcot ball.JPG

Yeah, well, he's not going to ruin my trip. It's time to do some tastings God d*mmit!

And where better to start in the blistering heat than the Hawaii booth:

Hawaii food.JPG

You're looking at the Kalua Pork Slider with Sweet and Sour Dole Pineapple Chutney and Spicy Mayonnaise, along with the Spicy Tuna Poke with Seaweed Salad, and two Florida Orange Grove Sparkling Pineapple Wines. It was delicious!!!

This was followed by a bunch of complaints from the peanut gallery (Phil) about how hot it was and how he was dying, to which I said, it's time for Greece!

Buddy Greece.JPG

Phil was starting to pout, so he didn't have anything, but I had Spanakopita, which was amazing, and I will be checking into the fat farm next week.

Next was Canada, and even a grumpy Phil Monster cannot resist cheese soup, even in the sweaty sun:

Canada food.JPG

Yes, that's right. We're eating on top of a garbage can. There was absolutely no other place to go. It was MOBBED.

PS - Please note the extra teeny tiny little half shot glass of apple wine that I have next to the soup, and which I paid 4 bucks for. I mean, it was good and all, but it was served in a plastic thimble. A dollar a sip?

Finally, and I don't even know how, we ended up on the other side of World Showcase, and here is the next and last thing I got that day at Food and Wine - the African butter chicken. It was freaking amazing. I could have eaten ten of these:

Butter chicken africa.JPG

At this point, Phil had been almost despondent the entire time and I kept asking him what was wrong with him, are you okay, blah blah blah. I actually thought he was coming down with something. He wa clearly miserable in the heat, and even though I knew it would cool down if we could just hang out a little while longer, I decided that Phil had suffered enough and had to be pulled from the park.

It was like when those contestants on Naked and Afraid decide after day 4 that they have had enough of being bitten by gigantic bugs and having their skin fried off of their bodies and they get pulled from the game.

I pulled Phil from the game.

The room was still not ready. Hopefully, we would get a notification while on the bus.............

A STAY AT FAKE KEY WEST, or DISNEY, I LOVE YOU - a mini trip report by Buddy Thomas - Part Three - in which Buddy posts some more room tour videos, thinks he is Spielberg, and fails, epically.

So, on the bus, we got the "your room is ready" text.

We got Building 29. A little walk from the main house, but it could have been so much worse.

Here we are, about to head into the room for the first time, and by room I mean......well......you'll see. That's Phil up ahead:

Building 29.JPG

So, please to enjoy a room tour of our Old Key West One Bedroom Villa:

And if you didn't get enough listening to that raving lunatic (me!), here is part two!

And with that, I will be back with you all tomorrow, if I haven't curled up into a fetal position due to the election results. In which case, I will be back to you....errr........someday.

Everyone go vote!

OMG--as usual, you didn't disappoint with your TR so far! (I have a long day ahead of me at work and voting after work--lines . . . ugh), but I laughed out loud multiple times here reading and looking at pictures of "happy" Phil !!! :hilarious: (Side note: in defense of Phil, I also despise heat and humidity, so I understood why he was miserable at times.) I'm really surprised that in November, it was still that hot. Yuck.

About the upgrade on the plane--if you paid for that and they stuck you in a middle seat, I hope you can request a refund for what (extra) you paid for that. At least Phil made it to a better location, but both of you should have received that. (If you still have your ticket receipt and your boarding pass--they should honor that and refund you the extra you paid.)

Never been to OKW (I think that's a DVC, and I'm not a DVC member), so I really enjoyed your photos and the video! Can't believe how big it was--and even a private laundry room inside your suite? Wow. Still trying to figure out why there was a bottle of (what looked like) aspirin next to the stash of candy you guys put on the table? o_O :D By the way, that tub looked great! Looked like a jacuzzi--cool. Was there a recent refurb? Everything looked so nice. I also didn't realize there was a kitchen in there, too. Being able to have breakfast in the room is a big deal to many guests.

Some of the kiosk food in EPCOT is very good during the festivals. I go to the Flower and Garden Festival each May, and have tried some of the festival food. Problem is that you wait in line for the food to "try" something, and if you really like it and want more--you don't feel like lining up again for it! (I know, I know . . . First World problems . . . :p )

Can't wait to hear more about your trip! :joyfull:

1. According to @Doc Disney, the train at the Orlando airport is called the fonorail (fake monorail, get it?)
2. Turkey neck selfies are best avoided by not snapping a pic while sitting.
3. Butter chicken is heaven on a plate.
4. Did you secretly book the bounce back offer like I told you to?!

LOL, thank you!

On number 4, I found the bounce back offer but it had expired on October 31. We checked in on November 1. I left a note for Mousekeeping but they never brought a new one. I called reservations but all they could do was a very minor, almost non-existent discount, so I just decided to wait until the Spring codes (hopefully) come out. :)

Proud of you for trying! Here's hoping for good spring discounts.....and a happy Phil! (Although I imagine either one of those things might be a minor miracle, :joyfull:)

A STAY AT FAKE KEY WEST, or DISNEY, I LOVE YOU - a mini trip report by Buddy Thomas - Part Four - in which Buddy tries to avoid having a fatal heart attack over the presidential election by posting more trip report!

Okay so I did not intend to post anything today, but I am seriously climbing the walls as these election results roll in. I'm not saying who I am voting for or anything, although I am sure you guys can guess, but this is getting crazy and my blood pressure is about to explode. So hey, I know what, let's just turn off the tv and continue this trip report and pretend like nothing bad can happen.

Well first of all, here is me this morning after I voted. I am such a nervous wreck that I almost ate my voting stickers.

Buddy voted.JPG

Well, now that we have that out of the way, let's continue on with the Disney trip.

So....where did we leave off? Ahhh, yes, Phil got pulled from the park due to exhaustion, heat stroke, and general Disney hatred.

While I was taking room video, Phil took himself a nap, but that was short lived when I woke him up and asked him if he wanted to go to Disney Springs. His answer will not surprise you:

"Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!"

Okay. Fine. Should we just sit in the room all night or what?

No, no. I don't think so. This is my vacation too, so I think a trip to the pool might just be in order. As I was about to walk out the door, Phil decided to come with.

And here is the pool:

Pool night.JPG

Very quiet, as you see. That sandcastle slide is totally creepy, if you ask me. It looks like a demon mouth at the bottom, but whatever. After a few rounds at the Gurgling Suitcase, no one is thinking about demons:

Buddy pool night.JPG

Yes, yes, I'll drink around a world, I'll drink around a monorail. I'll drink around anything. But you already know that, don't you? ;)

We had to take our drinks outside, because this was the scene at the very tiny Gurgling Suitcase:

Full Gurgler.JPG

No way in there.

So anyway, I tried again to get Phil to go to Disney Springs, but he would not do it. Too tired, blah blah blah.

SO the only other option for Dinner was Olivia's. And we were dressed in bathing suits, basically, so i was not sure if we would be in violation of any sort of dress code if we went there..........so I went to the hostess station and asked. The answer:

"Oh honey, we have a come as you are vibe here, and you are just fine."

All right then. Olivia's for dinner it is.

And here is the restaurant itself:

Olivia's.JPG

And here is me having fun and Phil being the Disney b*tch, as usual:

Olivia Buddy.JPG

Olivis Phil.JPG

Yeah, seriously, what is his problem. I'm thinking that he is never allowed to come again. But here comes our food!
Olivia food 1.JPG

Phil had Conch Fritters and I don't know what is in that main course bowel but if I had to guess, i would say some sort of pork dish. And here is mine, below, which is some sort of tofu vegetable thing, which was.........fine......or something.

Olivia food 2.JPG

Arghh....I'm sorry this is not more entertaining, but none of this matters in relation to what is happening on my tv right now (election), which is about to make me jump out a window, but so that we do not become political, let me run home from Olivia's and jump into a bubble bath!!!

Buddy tub 1.JPG

Well, so much for rolling through the rest of my 40's with any shred of dignity.

And on that note, I think I will go have my election heart attack. It's been nice knowing all of you. If I happen to recover, I will be back with you in the next day or so.
;)

I'm not saying who I am voting for or anything, although I am sure you guys can guess, but this is getting crazy and my blood pressure is about to explode. So hey, I know what, let's just turn off the tv and continue this trip report and pretend like nothing bad can happen.

Well first of all, here is me this morning after I voted. I am such a nervous wreck that I almost ate my voting stickers.

Very quiet, as you see. That sandcastle slide is totally creepy, if you ask me. It looks like a demon mouth at the bottom, but whatever. After a few rounds at the Gurgling Suitcase, no one is thinking about demons:

Yes, yes, I'll drink around a world, I'll drink around a monorail. I'll drink around anything. But you already know that, don't you? ;)

We had to take our drinks outside, because this was the scene at the very tiny Gurgling Suitcase:

No way in there.

So anyway, I tried again to get Phil to go to Disney Springs, but he would not do it. Too tired, blah blah blah.

SO the only other option for Dinner was Olivia's. And we were dressed in bathing suits, basically, so i was not sure if we would be in violation of any sort of dress code if we went there..........so I went to the hostess station and asked. The answer:

"Oh honey, we have a come as you are vibe here, and you are just fine."

All right then. Olivia's for dinner it is.

And here is the restaurant itself:

And here is me having fun and Phil being the Disney b*tch, as usual:

Yeah, seriously, what is his problem. I'm thinking that he is never allowed to come again. But here comes our food!

Phil had Conch Fritters and I don't know what is in that main course bowel but if I had to guess, i would say some sort of pork dish. And here is mine, below, which is some sort of tofu vegetable thing, which was.........fine......or something.

Arghh....I'm sorry this is not more entertaining, but none of this matters in relation to what is happening on my tv right now (election), which is about to make me jump out a window, but so that we do not become political, let me run home from Olivia's and jump into a bubble bath!!!

Well, so much for rolling through the rest of my 40's with any shred of dignity.

And on that note, I think I will go have my election heart attack. It's been nice knowing all of you. If I happen to recover, I will be back with you in the next day or so.
;)

Too bad Phil didn't want to go to Disney Springs, there's a lot of good food and drink there. But sounds like you made the most of it at the Gurgling Suitcase. And your bubble bath picture made my night. :joyfull:
