Pet Deliema

Okay so apparently at my apartment building we can have pets. I have wanted a pet since freshman year so this is exciting to me. I really want a little dog or cat.. and my roommate does too (she loves animals and was talking about the cutest zu that they have at the animal center.

The problem is our other roommates. They don't want a pet and apparently wouldn't let Annie have one last year because they didn't want the apartment to smell. :( :(... Now my problem is I have a soft place for all animals and hearing about the poor animals who are at the shelter (and what will happen to them if they don't find homes) kinda makes me very very sad.

Does anyone have any advice on how to convince our other two roommates? They seem to even have problems with Natasha (Annie's turtle) ... I guess they aren't animal people...

I think I would be on the roommate´s side this time... sorry... If you were living in a house, I would say whatever, but since you are in an apartment, the space is very reduced and yes, you will have the smell... and the puppy or cat requires a lot of attention and care, medicines, $$, etc. Not everybody -specially having school duties and social life- will be willing to take care of a little animal around the apartment which will need space more than anything and that space would be your space!

I can´t be of much help...hehe... but I think it would require a lot of commitment. A pet could be the cuttest one one second and and the most awful destroyer of your stuff the next one. :animwink:

I have to side with Maria and the roomates....all of the animals you mentioned...even the turtle...can smell...or worse! However, I've found that using these little "turtle" shaped stones that you buy in the pet store really helps to keep the water cleaner...since the containers are fairly small, I break the tablets into smaller pieces.

A leopard gecko is very neat, easy to clean, and actually interacts quite a bit. Not as warm and fuzzy as a puppy or kitten, but fun none the less!

I have a dog .We had him from a puppy so there was plenty of smells,______ and the other stuff........now hes 18 months and its smelly and muddy and holes in the garden .....he craves attention all the time...........also we have had to insure him because he eats socks and they get stuck inside of him ...........

I dont think a rescue dog would be any easier either :(

BUT i love him to bits ......did i mention the HAIRS boy he sheds like crazy i have to hoover every day ...........and when we come to WDW we have to find some one to look after him.........oh and he loves swimming so hes wet alot ..........

I could go on and on but a dog is HARD work for everyone and if your flat mates dont want one at the moment im with Maria youll have to wait :(

I have to agree with Maria and Mom...
Pets are a HUGE responsibility! Even cats, who are mostly independent....(Except for mine...LOL) require ALOT of care and attention! The smell is something you can control, but you MUST be on top of it at ALL times, and sometimes hairballs and accidents cannot be avoided...
THEN there is the question of who will take care of the pet when it comes to school breaks?? and who takes the pet home??? Who pays for the food, and the Vet bills??? Immunizations can be expensive...and so can Spaying or Neutering the pet....
I know how difficult it can be, and I just moved 3000 miles across country with mine...I adopted them, and I have dished out my share of cash for vet bills and Boarding...
I LOVE them...but, being in the situation you are in, I would suggest either waiting to get a dog or cat, and get some fish...or even a bird...but they can Destryoy things as well....
A dog left alone, can be VERY spiteful, and adopting one from the pound is an honorable thing to do, they can come with some behavioral problems...the last thing you wanna do is have to take it back, after disrupting the household.....
Just my Opinion...of course....

Don't forget too that a dog or cat requires a 10 to 20 year committment. I know how you feel because I want to adopt EVERYTHING - lol- but if I were you I would wait until I was more on my own and not living with 3 other people.

Also-- since you are all at college I assume you all plan on working full-time when you graduate-- and dogs need a LOT of time & attention! At a time when you and your roommates are going to getting yourselves settled into your careers, you're probably going to be working loooooong hours.

I know it stinks! I'm animal-crazy too! But it's HARD.

I had one hamster live for 4 years :)

Her name was Furball. She was your basic little hamster. Ate hamster mix, ran in a hamster wheel, loved her hamster ball, and climbing through hamster tubes. She lived in an old 20 gallon fish tank though...

It's only fair to respect the wishes of anyone with whom you agreed to share the apartment. Anything that would alter a roomies original expectation of comfort level should be unanimously agreed to.:)

...I hate going to the shelters too. I wanna bring them all home.:(

A note:

Don't get Russian or Siberian Dwarf hamsters unless you're into a challenge. They never acclimate to human contact and have a tendancy to bite. They live in communal groups (unlike the average little fuzzy hamster who prefers to live alone) but will keep reproducing and then eating their young if there's not enough space for "everyone."

I got them cuz they were cute.. but jeeze.. Small and dangerous.

Then i got Furball. :)

How about a snake? No joke! We've got a Miami Phase corn snake (he's beautiful) and we keep him in a 20 gallon aquarium with a secured lid. They don't smell and they only eat once a week. We love ours! He's two feet long and his girth is about the size of my index finger. Very low maintenance.

im sorry angel, but i have to agree with the no dogs thing. they need a lot more attention than you will be able to give right now. also, since some of your roommates dont want the dog, you need to respect that. If one of my roommates wanted a dog, and i expressed that i didnt think it was a good idea(as i have alergies and prefer mostly outdoors dogs) I would be pretty annoyed if they just kept pushing the issue with me...
My advice would be to get a big fish tank like we have in our apartment... fishies rule!! yay

I am in agreement with everyone else here. You cannot force animals on your roommates.

Every time the animal does one of those destructive/disgusting/smelly things that animal lovers shrug off, the roomies will blame you. You want to skip the drama that will happen when the animal chews/whizzes/sheds on someone's favorite shoes/couch/sweater.

I would suggest you indulge your animal cravings by hiring yourself out as a pet sitter or walker, or volunteering at the shelter.

Sorry that this is not what you wanted to hear...:(

Maybe I do just need a guy LOL but that requires a mutal thing.. Annie and I are just lonely I think. Natasha is great... she doesn't smell, she's well behaved and she's actually entertaining hehe.

Hamsters... scare me... lizards and snakes freak me out and ... fish are boring...

I'll just have to make due with my huge mutts at home when I visit...

And um.. Tramp what pet store have you been to that has boys for sale LMAO.
