PBS said:
Since its premiere on PBS KIDS in 1983, READING RAINBOW has helped children build lasting relationships with books at home and in the classroom. As broadcast rights are set to expire, PBS will no longer feed READING RAINBOW after August 28, 2009, and all broadcast rights will discontinue after that date.

Production ended on READING RAINBOW several years ago and viewership for the show has declined dramatically. Nationally-recognized stories authored by children will be available online between August and December 2009, at which point the READING RAINBOW Web site on pbskids.org will end. The Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest was just completed with 96 stations participating in local judging and recognition ceremonies.

Still available for the classroom, off-air educational rights remain in effect for a year following the last broadcast of each episode. PBS and member station WNED, producer of READING RAINBOW, are discussing plans to continue the contest on a national level as well as plans to build out a literacy Web site for school age children.

I remember that being a favorite of mine years ago... :(

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo.......

I LOVED this show as a kid! Sheesh...What a awesome show. I know for a fact that is had a huge role in my love of literature.

It will be missed...

Kinda surprised that PBS would let this go so easily, when there is such a problem with education and learning in this country. This is almost a step backward.

It was Winnie the Pooh, Batman/Superman, Pinky and the Brain, and Recess for me.:o
Oh I remember when One Saturday Morning first came on, I'd switch over to that after Garfield. LOVED Recess, Pepper Ann, Doug and Science Court.

Anyway. I just told my friend about Reading Rainbow and he proceeded to cry "NOOOOO LAVAAAAAAAAAAAAR" so at least we know we're not alone.

One Saturday Morning was THE BEST.:sohappy: And it was Disney!!:sohappy:

Never heard of Science Court, though... I do recognise the rest, though. Loved them all.

Remember Mrs. Munger's class?:ROFLOL:

And yeah, I'll miss Lavar and the very shiny butterfly (he always blinded me!) too.:( It's a sad day for PBS....

Aaaawwww. :( That used to be one of my favourite shows when I was little. Got me interested in so many books.

I guess its safe to say that the 90s generation of great kids television has completely died out...

Well, as the article stated, production ended years ago, so it's not like they've been making new episodes and suddenly decided to let it go. I'm sure they have some new educational show lined up and ready to go for PBS stations across the country to put on in place of "Reading Rainbow." I'll certainly miss it, especially since it was something that was watched in 2nd grade by my class and the classroom next door to us all together. It also introduced me to Anansi the Spider who showed up years later in a great book by Neil Gaiman, "American Gods." For shows on PBS when I was growing up, though, for me it was "Reading Rainbow," "3-2-1 Contact," "The Voyage of the Mimi" and "Square One Television."

Science Court was awesome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRA7BuPFJlU
And Mrs Munger's class was hilarious! Wasn't there some kind of spinoff with the lunchlady too?
Wow I'm going to spend the day on Youtube again, I can tell.
Yep!

I'll join you...

OMG I right there with you on these shows! That was my afterschool TV. I remember when we got to watch an episode of Reading Rainbow in class and I wished that I could be one of the kids who talks about the book they read.
