...just waiting as long as possible. The usual routine now.
The irony of most of the other Disney properties working on major expansions, despite having various COVID-19 related closures as the flagship has stayed open since July, while WDW pauses its existing, near-complete projects and remains noncommittal on its 50th, is not lost upon me.

It’s almost as though they take WDW bookings for granted.

How much longer will they blame the pandemic for sitting on their hands while the parks are packed and their competitors (and sister properties) keep building?

DLR is still closed but has reaffirmed that their Marvel land opens this year. WDW can’t pick a date for really anything (other than the date of their anniversary, which they can’t change) despite sustained bookings.

A lot of people think epcot is hurting for attendance, but I wouldn’t say that’s true the last month or so. It’s been looking like pre Covid crowds there for a while now. It may not be fully booked, but I don’t think opening rat right now is going to add any meaningful revenue to make it worth the chaos it will create with current guidelines. Maybe a special ticketed event would be good for world showcase, keep all the attractions open, some food and shops, do a firework show, and ride rat. Boom: $$$.

The worst Disney customers (by far) are at wdw.

Not for Disney...they’re fantastic for them...for themselves.

They tolerate everything, they don’t ever question the prices, and they never ask for anything in return.

Do we think the center of Future World being closed (including two enormous buildings) along with two full pavilions to its East, a show and post show to its west, and almost all of the live entertainment and much of the dining in World Showcase might be to blame?

Topiaries are pretty, though.

Oh totally! It looks like they have prepped the stores in Canada and UK to open soon, but that’s not going to add any significant capacity. And future world is not going to be ready for a while yet. I think most restaurants have reopened in world showcase though? So yes that’s all contributing to the crowds, and if you open up rat it just doesn’t seem worth the mess it’s going to create while not really increasing capacity overall for the park. That’s why I was thinking the party route might work.

now I’m having flashbacks to something, didn’t we used to do some sort of late night world showcase party during food and wine one year?

Given the pace of vaccination, they still want a reason for people to return. Unfortunately they already wasted MMRR due to an unlucky opening date. Rat is the only option. And it is at the park, of the four, which can best-handle an opening. The ride being very far from the park entrance helps.

It seems as if the crowds are there pretty consistently now. What is the reasoning behind not opening up all the food locations (MK, AK, all of them) and shops? Or in the hotels, why still so many restaurants closed?

Is it really the demand isn't there? Because it seems like people are starting to ask for more food. 😂

I’m just guessing, but I feel like we are getting very close to the tipping point of having to open more venues. I know it’s all a balance of how many guests vs how many cast are already back vs how many cast would need to be called back and still be able to give them their minimum hours. Big opportunity would be having tomorrowland terrace open all the time.

the other issue is physical distancing, at MK for example Caseys and ice cream parlour would have very little room to hold a line, tortuga is being used as stroller parking and harbour house is an extended queue for PPF. The issue then becomes where do you put all the people waiting to order/picking up food from mobile order? I think MK is pretty much at the breaking point.

I think social distancing on rides is about to end, and they will start loading every row of rides (although they might keep it to one party per row) in the next 2-3 weeks. Most rides are less then 15 min, so this does not break the bubble. Also guidelines are to mask or social distance while both is preferred, one is acceptable without the other. It would greatly increase capacity, making the lines move quicker and keeping the lengths in check.

I think socially distant lines will be gone by Memorial Day too, but masks stick around until the CDC gives the ok.

How does waiting for vaccinations help in the long run? Whether they opened it now or in September, there will still be lots of people returning for the first time in the fall. It would be "new" to them whether it's 6 days old or 6 months old.

They shouldn't lift anything until everyone who wants the vaccine is able to get it. It will be impossible to social distance if they raise capacity anymore, it's already near impossible in certain areas of every park.

The counter argument is that you shouldn’t be going to a theme park until you’re vaccinated. CM will be getting theirs very soon (weeks) and increasing capacity on rides does nothing to their risk. Ending it in lines would, but by the time summer starts, and they will be protected.

If that's the counter argument, then the parks should have been closed for a year.

-Disney wants $
-More people=More $
-In a few weeks 25% of this country should be fully vaccinated and another 15-25% partially, those people are going to be willing to take more risks.
-Those people are going to give Disney more leniency on the safety issue and thus allow Disney to make changes that increase capacity.
-Increased capacity=Increased $
