parking lot trams

This maybe a weird question, but does it bother anyone how noisy the engines are on the parking lot trams! Why do they have to use engines that sound like they could lift a 747 off the ground. I mean isn't there a much less noisy engine they could use to power the trams?

I'm not sure exactly what kind of engine they're using...but I would assume it's the same setup as the cab that pulls the very same 747's that you're talking about when they're taxiing.

The cabs are built strictly for "tugging" and I'm assuming you need a pretty powerful engine to do so...

Can it be deafened...I'm sure, using some soundproofing, but it would probably be cheaper to buy a whole new fleet of cabs than to replace the engines in all of them.

Those trains weigh around 24 tons with passengers on board, its no easy task to move that much weight in a tram. Those engines are serioulsy powerful (they are actually turbo charged).

Just to give you an idea about the tram... the original trams had smaller engines in them (and the tram was only 5 cars). Prior to opening, they were testing them and they were not able to pull up the hill to get to the TTC from the parking lot. SO, they tinkered with the engines and whatnot, and ended up with massive 8cyl engines. Now they use 5cyl turbocharged engines that are more efficient. But regardless, they do have to be pretty powerful to do what they do in the Florida heat. My advice is to do what I do -- sit in the back! :)

The trams are actually rather silent. The engine noise has been added by Sound Effect Imagineers for atmosphere and theming. The theme, of course, being that of a parking lot. :D

They ARE loud...that's for sure...BUT....we rode one at MGM once that was billowing out some dark smoke, and it literally made my wife VERY sick to her stomach!!! LUCKILY, we were LEAVING or it would have absolutely RUINED our day at the park!!! But yes, I've always thought they were very loud as well!!!

I have never noticed the noise before. I guess I'm always to excited just to be at WDW.

But just think about the amount of weight they are having to pull. Have you seen the size of the average WDW guest lately, as well as all the strollers and everything else people feel they have to bring into the parks? And before you start flaming me....I am including myself in that weight group of the average WDW guest. LOL

Yeah...that's one of the great things about being at WDW....

With all the great free transportation availble for Guests who stay on Property, who needs a parking lot! LOL!!

Well...okay...i'll admit that i do kind of miss not being able to ride the Trams and hear the spiels. Maybe i'll have to do the Trams like i do the Monorails....just ride them for the fun of it.

Ok, I give. What is "the Spiel?" I have been many times to the world in my 35 years and have never ridden a tram. I am tempted to ride one now just to see what it is all about. I never expected two threads about trams.

"We're coming up on Goofy lot - gather all your, etc." They may say more now - I haven't ridden in years. I miss them.

I think most people who talk about the spiel are referring to the "welcome aboard" pre-recorded safety speech they play. Although some of the trams have a new pre-recorded spiel. The new one is Corey Burton and instead of starting with "welcome aboard" it starts with "hello everyone."
