News Paradise Pier Becoming Pixar Pier

Aren't the chicken meals at the box thing supposed to come with mini-zurg toys? Wasn't that like, a big deal when they were pushing the pier?

No, the idea was to have a photo op next to it where you take a picture with an oversized mini zurg figure. It showed up for a while then disappeared but now it is back again:

As much as I think the execution of Pixar Pier has been an utter disaster and a disgrace...

I had the rainbow unicorn the other day and oh boy did I smile the entire time I was drinking/eating that stupid high fructose corn syrup bomb... I'll need to get another one of those things...

I don't like the cement flooring in the store... is this going to be a new thing for new projects? I expect better from the leader in the themepark industry...

I'm sure this was already discussed, but with 500 pages I'd be reading all day before finding out. The thing that irks me the most about Pixar Pier is that most of the positives were either stolen or revamped from old ideas. Firstly, the idea of a candy shop on the boardwalk is not a new idea, as we can see in this concept art for the revamping of Paradise Pier in 2009:

In this image we can see a banner for a "Candy Palace" well as a theatre, which makes me think that they already had some sort of blueprints for the conversion of this part of the park, and it was given a Pixar overlay. The theatre for Pixar Pier was dropped for the bandstand, but my guess is that it would have been virtually identical to these original plans.

The second thing that bugs me is that some of the grandest elements that actually accent Pixar Pier well are carbon copies from Tokyo Disney Sea's Trolley Park.

Even some of the things we saw in the concept art for Pixar Pier that didn't come to fruition matched set pieces found in Tokyo. It explains why Disney was able to quickly fabricate these set pieces for Pixar Pier, yet still have so many of their custom parts missing, such as the Luxo Lamp, Bing Bong, and the late arrival of mini-Zurg. Very revealing of how rushed this project was.

It's also interesting to note that the Jessie figure that will be in front of the carousel seems to be an exact copy of the Jessie figure from Shanghai's Toy Story Land.

I have a theory that Pixar Pier was originally going to open alongside Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge next year, both to alleviate crowds of SWL and to open it's headliner attraction, The Incredicoaster, alongside the release of Incredibles 2, which originally was going to come out in 2019 but was bumped to 2018 when Toy Story 4 started having production issues. Not only would it have given them more time to get everything fabricated for the land and open everything at the same time, Flik's Flyers would have had time to go through a retheme, and it would explain why the announcement at D23 seemed to come from nowhere.

This is a really good theory tbh. It explains a lot about this project.

I don't mind that its best qualities are coming from tokyo disneysea; TDA doesn't budget properly for all things dca, and imagineers haven't always had the best ideas when it comes to this park either. My main criticism of hollywood pitures backlot was always that they did it way better in orlando with hollywood and sunset boulevards, and it annoyed me that they didn't just clone it, but rather make inferior versions of everything. At least we got some of tokyo's quality orientation. Without them this project would be even worse. Interesting theory however about the timeline moving up for this project. Another interesting question is what would have happened if eastern gateway got underway on time. Would marvel land have opened in 2019 also? or would the 2020 marvel land actually include a new E-ticket or a completely different location (north of hollywood).

This is nothing new, WDI constantly borrows elements and themes from one project and uses it for another.

You will find it interesting to know that the Toy story area in TDS was actually designed for DCA. so in reality TDS project borrowed the ideas original from DCA.
WDI had played around with turning Paradise Pier into a full Toy Story area when they were working on the DCA retheming. Everything in Paradise Pier including the old Orange stinger and maliboomer was going to be toy story themed
as ideas shifted the group of WDI working on the project decided to abandoned the more in your face cartoon elements and took a more subtle approach.
I believe that is why the original group of WDI were surprised to see that the new group completely disregarded the original approached to the pier and took the route they did.
They could have accomplished the whole Pixar theme idea without the need for the in your face cartoon elements.

I do recall the Green Army Men Parachute clone that was was slated for Maliboomer's spot from Blue Sky Cellar a few years back. I also do understand that concepts, ride systems, and lands often jump around parks. I would have loved a variation on Trolley Park in DCA, and I do see some elements of it even in the design for Toy Story Midway Mania, but I also know it draws a lot of inspiration from East Coast landmarks such as Luna Park in Coney Island.

A couple other things of note, with the cancellation of the Eastern Gateway Project plans for Marvel Land were shifted. I'm not sure if "a bug's land" was always on the chopping block for Marvel, but if it wasn't, that could explain a few Pixar Pier decisions. I took some pictures of the some of the earlier concepts of Pixar Pier from Blue Sky Cellar a while back:

If Flik's Flyers was going to stay, it makes sense that they would want a spinner in Pixar Pier, which we can see here themed around the omnidroid. We also can see a much more fleshed out Inside Out ride in the Maliboomer helix, which wouldn't house the Inside Out spinner. I'm kinda bummed we're getting Emotional Whirlwind, because this original concept looks a lot more interesting. Another thing of note that we did see in earlier concept art is another enclosed tube in the eastern helix. Makes me think that we were supposed to get a more proper finale for the Incredicoaster instead. A variation upon this can be seen in this concept art as well:
