I live in Villa Park, several miles directly due east of Disneyland, and it's been pouring rain all night here. Pouring! And according to the radar weather thing, the Disneyland area has been getting hit equally hard all Sunday evening.

This Paradise Garden area still has a lot of open dirt areas around it, and I sure hope the construction crews don't come in on Monday morning to find ankle deep mud that keeps them from their schedule!

I know I seem to keep mentioning this and worrying about it, but it's only about 10 weeks until this area opens on June 3rd. Plus there's also the exposed dirt area that is still to become the Little Mermaid queue and surrounding development also opening June 3rd.

This type of heavy rain is rare in SoCal, and rarer still this late in the winter rainy season.

Looks like you were right all along, TP! Seems they weren't able to get the restaurants finished on time for the June 3rd media event. The Disney Parks Blog announced that the two new restaurants, Corn Dog Castle, and Goofy's Sky School will be opening July 1st:

Coming in for a landing on Paradise Pier will be Goofy’s Sky School, a Wild Mouse-style roller coaster which carries Guests through a flying lesson from Goofy. Last summer, we showed you this video in which Goofy dreams of opening his own flight school – and on July 1, his dream will come true!

Also, two new dining locations and one returning favorite will add to the excitement: Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta and Paradise Garden Grill. Pam Brandon will be sharing details on these new restaurants here on the Disney Parks Blog later today.

Read the full entry here:http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2011/05/paradise-pier-transformation-to-be-complete-july-1/

And here's a look at the new menu items that will be served at Boardwalk Pizza + Pasta and Paradise Garden Grille:

As Erin Glover reported earlier today, two new quick-service spots debut July 1 at Paradise Pier at Disney California Adventure park. These new restaurants will be side-by-side, with 900 shared seats. Open for lunch and dinner, both will feature healthful options throughout the day. Here’s what you’ll find on the menus:

At Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta, on-stage kitchens will turn out flatbreads, pastas and freshly tossed salads. Flatbreads run the gamut from a traditional cheese or pepperoni to a Portobello mushroom and spinach flatbread with pesto, artichokes, mozzarella, ricotta-salata and Pecorino Romano (two fancy cheeses).

What did I win?! A free dinner at Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta? :sohappy:

So, obviously this new corner of the park won't make it by June 3rd. But when it does open a month later, the look of the new area is a dramatic improvement, and these new menus sound fantastic.

Is it me, or does Disneyland food keep getting better and better by the month? Methinks they finally wised up and are now trying to prevent me from running across Harbor Blvd. to Mimis Cafe when I want a decent meal.

They've been doing a great job with the new menus at the park. For quick-service counters, it's a pretty good selection of food and improved quality.

Especially with these two restaurants at Paradise Garden, quite a big improvement considering it's replacing the McDonalds that used to be there! Who can forget the giant UFO burger ;)

There's still so much to do in this corner of Paradise Pier! I wonder if they'll even make it by the newly pushed back July 1st deadline? :veryconfu

I certainly hope they make that deadline! Here are some brand new pictures from today - it's looking great :)

Fantastic! It is coming along quickly, as those newer pictures show. Five weeks, give or take a day, until this opens July 1st. Hmm....

This is such a great way to remake that entire corner of the park. The big attention in DCA this summer will be on Mermaid, obviously, but these new dining places and the dramatic retheme of the area surrounding them is a big plus for DCA, compared to what the area used to look like from 2001 to 2010.

I've said this before, but it's so obvious how they went into this 1.2 Billion Dollar Extreme Makeover with a surgeons knife, cutting out the weakest parts of DCA thematically and replacing it with dramatic improvements in aesthetics and offerings. Truly a brilliant way of doing this huge project. :sohappy:

It's interesting to note the paint scheme for the new buildings and the similarity to the Paradise Pier hotel in the background. A pretty clever way of creating a seamless look between the different buildings

Any chance this area "soft opens", does anyone think?

Going to be there from June 11th-16th. We'd love to try out Goofy's Sky School and some of the new foods.

I know they've been doing vehicle testing on GSS, which would make me think there's a chance of soft-open... But on the other hand, I don't know if they'd open GSS for soft-open without opening the area all around it.

Kinda a wierder situation than usual.

I think it's more likely that they would open the traffic area early and "soft open" GSS. If I had to guess, that is what I think they will do. They want to be operational by 7/1 so I am guessing in the week prior. Disney never practices on its guests. 6/16 is a stretch though.

Its coming along nicely, though I think they overdid it a bit with the palms...

Ha! That's likely an easier criticism for WDI to take in 2011 than the common (and legit) complaint from 2001 that California Adventure is devoid of shade and is just one big concrete walkway without any trees.

I believe those are Canary Date Palms, and the fronds are huge and really spread out very dense and wide after they've had a few months to settle in.

IMG_1962.jpg

The palms in the background behind the restaurant are Fan Palms that are actually part of the street landscaping on Disneyland Drive that runs right behind Paradise Pier. But the Canary Date Palms are going to be huge and totally shade the DCA parade route that passes between Paradise Garden and the spinner attractions along Paradise Bay.

For the record, I was referring to the date palms along the walkway in my original post; the fan palms behind the buildings (which are outside the construction area) I have no problem with. The problem is that there is not enough space between them. Like you said, the fronds will eventually spread out dense and wide, upwards of 20-25 feet in width. At best, there is only about 15 feet of spacing between each tree. I'm all for shade and palm trees but these new palms are WAY too close to each other.
