I don't think the whole fastpass system is corrupt. In fact, there are aspects I quite like. But, there are a few differences between this and the restaurant analogy. If a nice local steak house that we had reservations for that night burned down, there is no situation where I would turn to the wife and go, "Boy, if I had known the steak house was going to be set ablaze later today, we would've gotten up at 6 am to pound our filet mignons before the blaze and general restaurant crowds got out of control." Also, I would never say, "Dangnabbit, I know I should've invested more money in tickets that let us travel out of the steak zone to another area in the city for eats." Or, "Fred spent a lot of money to eat at this restaurant with us and now we can't eat anywhere else because we're already tied in to this restaurant."
As I was typing this, part of a solution that would satisfy most occurred to me. If a fastpass+ ride that you had a reservation for is down for more than 3 hours and it includes your window, let everyone who had a reservation for that ride book a fastpass+ reservation anywhere in the world whether or not they had a hopper. If you don't have a hopper, you obviously can't hop around after you change parks once, but if you could see "Soarin over the world" because NRJ or FoP was down all day, many would be quite happy. If it is just my nuclear family we're always in the AP situation, but by virtue of growing up down there, I've been in the situation many times where I've been travelling with a friend(s) or family member(s) who spent a lot of money for one day at WDW. Quite often they haven't been in years. I can understand the high levels of frustration in that situation.
