I’ve said this before, but the park has plenty of California inspiration. It’s just fantasy and no longer the direct California reference it once was back when it opened in 2001.

That is mostly due to the bones and left over of lands form 2001 more than the new parts.

Pixar Pier is still a pier. That is a stretch isn't it?

Cars, it is more based on Arizona than anything Cali.

Avengers Campus...huh?

The entrance to the park is nice though.

CA imo

Entrance - solid ca theming
GRR/Soarin area - solid theming
Pixar Pier - solid theming
CarsLand - solid theming
wine terrace - solid theming
wharf, now sanfransokyo - solid theming
AC - not solid theming, but being a campus it can be put anywhere
Hollywoodland - solid theming even though the area is not very good

i mean, it seems like the majority of the park still has a california theme, even if you dont like the IP inclusion (and i agree with ya on some of them) its still pretty california themed to me. I could see them turning this park into a studios park, but theyd need to redo GRR and soarin or make a movie based on them and the grand californian would prob have to be rethemed. Overall Im on team CA, its a decent little sister park to DL and almost everything in it is exclusive to CA.

No, what’s left over from 2001 applies to the direct California references I mentioned earlier.

Cars Land does look like it could be somewhere in California. We have deserts, too.

The pier is a bit of a stretch, but California is very well known for beaches and piers.

Hollywood Land. Yeah.

Buena Vista Street, self-explanatory.

Grizzly Peak, another self-explanatory one.

Pacific Wharf, soon to be San Fransokyo. Self-explanatory.

The only one that is a head-scratcher is Avengers Campus. I agree, huh?

What the heck is California Adventure's over-reaching theme now anyway?

It really is the ultimate Iger/Chapek wish park. They just toss is in. It is just "Adventure" without much of California left.

IOA is Adventure and has a a basic but neat throughline with a nautical arch that connects the islands.

Buena Vista Street has a Starbucks and overpriced clothing. Very California

Hollywood Land had a lot of empty facades like a real Hollywood backlot. Very California

Grizzly Peak has a mountain named after a bear but looks like a dog. Kinda California

Paradise Gardens has the look of many an open air mall. Very California

Pacific Wharf smells like the Santa Monica Pier. Smell you later California

Cars Land because Californians like cars and no one in the rest of the US does. Mucho California

Pixar Pier to make a quick buck. Mucho Denaro California

Avengers Campus…..third rate jr college? Connect the dots California

There you have it, CALIFORNIA!

This is another one of those announced overlays where I'm like... was Big Hero 6 really that popular to justify a land themed to it? A dedicated meeting space is fine but this makes me feel like they're banking on this IP having lasting popularity over the next 10-20 years.

Unless modern Disney doesn't think that far ahead anymore.
Modern Disney thinks that even if Big Hero 6 isn’t that popular, it’s more popular and way more “Disney” than this generic Pacific Wharf, and so even in 10-20 years it’ll still be an improvement on that basis alone. They seem to think most guests would rather something from a Disney movie on the simple condition that it’s from one of their movies.

It’s like they’re so baked in the synergy thing that they’ve lost sight of the actual product.

That's sort of the problem with all of these IP lands. Some are warranted but others require knowledge of the film, which obviously fade over time. Pandora may be the exception. It's a shortsighted strategy.

It's really funny when you think about this. The Big Hero 6 movie is like 10 years old, its decent I guess but very forgettable. It's already on the edge of obscurity as far as Disney is concerned.

Yet to them theming it to this property makes sense. Like you said though, in 10-20 years will anyone remember this movie?

Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco has stuck around forever without needing a movie to base it off of.

I wouldn't call Pixar Pier solid theming. Prior to Pixar, Disney was moving towards better theming and details with the news stand hot dog vendor and other details, but Pixar Pier feels very much like a 6 Flags now.

I also would disagree on the San Fransokyo being solid as the pictures make it look pretty sad. The bridge is simply too small to try and pull off the grandeur and forced perspective. It is the same issue they had with the Golden Gate Bridge over the entrance.

Exactly and this is my biggest issue with it. It will take something that is low key and fits in nicely to something artificial, forced and cheap looking. Nice place making/ world building turning into a forced meet n greet and that nobody is asking for. They re Pixar Pier’ing the Wharf except this is worse in a sense since Pacific Wharf isn’t ugly.

I also the fear that Pacific Wharf Bakery goes away and I can’t make my Turkey Leg sandwiches anymore. The Bakery seems like the likeliest spot for the store and Meet n Greet but they do sell a lot of food so it’s confusing. Or maybe Boudin leaving is what got them thinking about this retheme in the first place.

It's a "Campus" so I kind of just see it as a tech hub, like an Apple campus or something. silicon valley, tech campus, type thing.

Why can't I have a Wreck it Ralph / Flynns arcade in the Starcade? I've played the real Fix-it Felix Jr arcade machine many times. I'd love to see a Sugar Rush arcade cabinet. They can dig out the Space Paranoids machine too. Wreck-it Ralph did just as well as Big Hero 6.

I don't think 6flags is near as nice as PP, nor does it have a WoC level show, but whatever. And I'm excited for sanfransokyo, looks cool imo and I think it def fits the CA theme

It depends on the Six Flags. There are plenty of coasters Six Flags has done that are better themed than the characters on a stick level of Incredicoaster.
