Ok, so you get the title...DH and I are headed back to WDW! We're running the Princess Half Marathon at the end of our vacation, and we're not bringing our kids this time! Oh, and "migration" because we live in the Pacific Northwest...we're heading south for a break from the rain and cold!

This is a MOM&DAD-ONLY TRIP!!! This is the first ever for us! Of course we have not mentioned to our kids that we are going. They probably will be mad when they learn we went without them. But we couldn’t take them out of school, and frankly, we needed a husband-and-wife only trip. It might be our first real vacation just us in our whole marriage, so ummmm, IT’S ABOUT TIME!!! So let’s get the party started!

PRE-TRIP:

Backstory:

Hello everyone and welcome to my first trip report in a while! I did the math and it had been 502 days in between our trips to Walt Disney World! That is so long!! It had been exactly 420 days since we’d been to Disneyland. So 60 weeks since we’d last stepped foot in a Disney Park of any kind!! It was weird to know we hadn’t visited one at all in 2010. But life has changed and we live all the way across the country now (literally 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean). We got totally spoiled from 2008-2009 living on the Panhandle of Florida, visiting 5 times in that period.

Trip Journal:

Surprise!
Back in August of last year, I started to price out what it would cost for DH and me to head to Florida to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary. That fell through and then I came to peace with not going. Then my awesome, incredible, amazing husband surprised me on our anniversary day with red roses, and a really cute card with his present written inside…One trip to run a Disney Half Marathon!! Wow!

Originally I figured we’d just head down to Disneyland, then after researching when the races were, I knew I didn’t want to wait a whole year to redeem my cool gift (which is how long it would be until the Disneyland one). So I asked DH what he thought about us going to Disneyworld for the Princess Half Marathon in February. He said, “Fo sho!”

So I got to work with planning, as any good DG (Disney Geek-adopted from BigTex71) does. First, had to decide when the vacation would happen…before, after or sandwiching the Princess Half Marathon. Well I’ve run a half marathon before, and I don’t walk very well for a few days afterward. So…I figured it made much more sense to trek around the parks for several days and run the PHM on our very last day. I also figured not everyone coming to run the race would vacation before the race so hopefully the crowds would be minimal. So our tentative dates were February 20th-February 27th! Yay! One thing down. Only bummer is that this would be like week 8 of Winter Term for me for school. I just figured I’d have to work ahead the weeks prior. It’s worth it for a trip to Disneyworld!

A Day Off Property @ Disney is Better than a Day at Home!
Next I looked up places to stay and even called a Disney representative because they can search what dining deals there are and if/how you can swing military room discounts, etc. Unfortunately, Disney really couldn’t offer us much. But I was able to nail down a great reservation at an Armed Forces Vacation Club 2-bedroom timeshare for only $369 for the whole week, the same days we needed! And no, no timeshare presentation required… It’s really close by, and got great reviews from other military families we know. When I factored everything in, Disney’s deals didn’t even come close to matching the savings even if we had to rent a car. I don’t get picky when it comes to where we stay, as long as it means I’m going to Disneyworld, I’m pretty flexible. We do a lot of resort hopping while we’re at Disneyworld anyway. Maybe one day we’ll buy into DVC, and then we’ll start staying at resorts.

Next, I started to analyze park hours and extra magic hours. See, when I know we are staying off-property, I plan around EMH, specifically avoiding parks that have EMH. We also don't park-hop, we just enjoy one park per day. I came up with my outline and laid down ADRs right away. It is SO EASY to get the ADRs you want when it is only 2 people versus our usual 5. Speaking of which, we worked out childcare right around now as well. Luckily, we have a great family who are excited for us and happy to help.

Brand New Dining experiences I have plans/ADRs for:
~ Beaches N Cream (no ADR needed)
~Pizzafari or Restaurantosaurus (no ADR needed)
~Jiko
~Le Cellier
~Raglan Road
~50’s Prime Time Café
~Boston Lobster Feast (@ DH’s request)
~Artist Point
Not new: Crystal Palace (breakfast-DH’s favorite).
I’m really looking forward to all of the dining experiences. I wish we had more time/stomach room for more J

Run Like a Girl!
For the next few weeks, I watched the PHM registration status like a hawk. I knew we’d have to pay for this trip gradually but I didn’t want to end up waiting so long that we couldn’t get in…because it was the reason for the trip in the first place! We missed the first registration price, but I’m glad I waited because over the course of those weeks, DH decided he’d like to run it with me!! *swoon* He’s the best! I love him so much! So when the PHM hit about 65% full, I registered us as a team, and picked Ariel as our princess. I also started searching for cool outfit pieces to wear to make the race even more fun!

A month later, it was time to buy our plane tickets. I was glad we waited on this too because DH learned that he’s got 3 weeks of training in Mobile, AL, which starts…February 28th! The timing couldn’t be better! DH started researching and was able to fix the plane tickets so that his will be paid for since it is work-related. Woohoo!! We just won’t get to fly home together obviously. So we’ll rent a car and drive down to Disneyworld from Mobile, something we are quite familiar with (if y’all don’t remember, we lived there for 5 years prior to moving to Rainy-ville, OR last year).

So in finishing up the details, DH ordered our military tickets through the local morale office, of which he just so happens to be in charge of and it is because of him DisneyWORLD tickets are now available for order. Until recently, we could only buy the military tickets to Disneyland. Did I mention how much I love him?? Somewhere around the same time, I ordered a cute sparkly green skirt and purple running top for the PHM.

25 days out:
We receive our info packet from our resort! YAY!!! Our vacation is starting to feel that much more real. We also file our taxes which is always a nice little bonus.

Another noteworthy subject: running endurance. About 2 weeks ago, DH and I had finally gotten up to running 6 miles. Then DH pulled his calf muscle. PT says he’s out for a few weeks! Yikes! And right in the middle of our training plan. Oh well, this race’s purpose is fun! I’ve gotten back up to 7 miles so far…When I ran the Eugene Half Marathon last year competitively, I’d only gotten up to running 10 miles, and it went really well still. So I know we’ll survive even if the best we do is 7 miles. We’ll do a walk/run combo and take time for character stops and such.

24 days out:

Our WDW tickets arrive!! YAY!!
DSCN0540.jpg

We officially have all our ducks in a row! Now to just save up $$ for meals and FUN! Today it was actually sunny where we live, and I realized I don’t have any sunglasses or flip-flops. Time to go for a little vacation shopping trip. Another detail I worked out was that I booked a wonderful couple’s massage session! I researched all the different offerings on property, then went to the Niki Bryan Spas website (the company that does all of the Spa offerings in and around WDW). As it turns out, the same 50-minute couple’s relaxation massage costs $80 less just by going off property to the main spa!! I can’t wait to surprise DH with a couple’s message session! He’s going to love it. I plugged it into our itinerary for late afternoon on the second day we hit Typhoon Lagoon. *Note: It turns out I suck at surprises. I was so excited I went ahead and told DH ahead of time. His reply was a great big, mischievous smile and “NICE.”

20 Days Out:
Tomorrow we’ll actually be in our vacation month. What an amazing feeling. To tell you the truth, when we moved to Oregon, I figured we wouldn’t realistically be visiting The Happiest Place on Earth while we were here. Plane tickets for 5 are so expensive and I figured now that we live on the West Coast, we would choose destinations such as Hawaii, San Francisco or other warm places to visit while we were here. Disneyland, maybe. But here we are, as our vacation gets closer and closer, and it’s really going to happen! Brings a tear to my eye.

The closer we get to vacation, the more well aware I am that I need to start working harder on the curriculum for this term. I need to be a week ahead before we head out or I’ll be worried about school while we’re there. That is NO BUENO. No worrying while at WDW!! So starting today, I’m hitting the books hard.

See you in the next installment!

Day 3: EPCOT: "...and WELCOME to the 21st Century!!"

Today we started by getting up and getting ready for our (new) ADR for Boma for breakfast. I have to say, all the food we'd eaten the night before had made it hard to eat much that morning. I only filled one plate of food but I did get some awesome POG juice! :sohappy: We really enjoyed our breakfast there and AKL is just gorgeous!! I forgot to bring my camera in. I think I was a little tired and spacing things out.

After breakfast, we headed over to EPCOT thinking we were going to make opening, but we missed it by like 5 minutes. It turned out ok though, because we missed the mob to the FP queue for Soarin' and we just strolled on in to a FP machine.

We thought it was funny how our FP tickets were for two different times, 11:12 and 11:15.

While we waited for our FP time to come up, we headed over to Living with the Land. For some reason it is one of our favorites.

Day 3: EPCOT: "...and WELCOME to the 21st Century!!"

After LwtL, we headed over to Captain EO, a show Ben described as "totally 80s awesome". I'd never seen it before but I'm an MJ fan, and an 80s fan (I did grow up in the 80s after all). So we checked it out!

040.jpg

042.jpg

It was an interesting show, I can see why it was so popular in the 80s. I enjoyed the music and the 3-D effects were definitely ahead of their time. But I don't think I'd be racing to see it again right away.

After EO, we strolled next door to see Figment in action. He's so cute!

048.jpg

In Imageworks, I found a really great frame, a wooden one similar to ones I have at home, only it had burnt out sketching of phrases and sayings in all sorts of fonts. I almost bought it, and looking back I really wish I had because I never got around to buying one. I also got another pressed penny there.

Our FP time still wasn't up so we headed across FutureWorld to check out wait times for Test Track and Mission:Space. TT was down, and M:S had too long of a wait for our liking(probably 30 minutes). So instead, we headed over to Spaceship Earth

050.jpg

054.jpg

The wait was about 20 minutes, but the queue is always moving so it doesn't feel very long.

055.jpg

We love this classic Disney ride. I was surprised that we only rode once this trip.

I just love Soarin'. I especially love the river, orange groves, Navy Ship and beach and sunset scenes. DH said that he teared up when he saw and smelled the orange groves. He almost loses it every time when we follow the H-60 off the carrier. DH flies one of those(only it's orange and white).

After our awesome flight, we headed out to World Showcase. Ben looks forward to World Showcase most out of every single thing in WDW. Here's a few pictures along our way.

France

As we crossed over into France, I saw...Marie!! I've never met my favorite little feisty cat so I got in line ("Ladies do not start fights but they can finish them..."). Now I mentioned that Ben isn't really crazy about characters, but as you'll see he's in a lot of the pictures with them(until I get to the Princess Half Marathon part of the TR). I think the reason for him being in the pictures was about 30% humoring me, and 70% awesome characters who would insist he be in the picture...especially since we were wearing Anniversary buttons.

Ben seemed to have a habit of taking pictures of me like this...mid-bite

We found the most peaceful spot past the topiaries. I loved sitting under this tree. When the wind would blow, all these tiny white petals would fall, like snow or something. It was so beautiful.

We got an apple turnover and Ben got a German hotdog with saukraut, I can't remember what they're called.

165-1.jpg

I forgot a fork, so I popped into the caramel shop to get one(did not find one there) and oh my goodness just the smell in there was mesmerizing!! I took a quick look at the items in the case and then took a few good whifs. I think if food could be consumed by osmosis (via smell) then this would definitely be the place to be!

Another flattering shot of me taking a bite of something.

I seem to be late on everyone TRs anymore. Dang!

I see y'all didn't have much trouble letting go of the kiddies. Sounds like y'all had a fab time from the get-go.

I didn't know y'all lived in Mobile! Dern woman! I knew you had lived somewhere in the Northwest Florida-ish corridor. I don't know why I was thinking closer out to like Eglin or Whiting Field on the east side of P'Cola. We pass thru Mobile fairly often when we make the turn onto I-65 towards the little po-dunk town in Alabama my folks live in (Monroeville...blech!). Tracey's sister & her family live in one of those big 100+ year old homes in Old Mobile. He lived in Mobile for several years when he was a kid and graduated from Davidson. Mobile is where we moved to right after we got married and got our first little apartment (off Lloyd's Lane in West Mobile). AND, Brian was born in Springhill Memorial Hospital! Oh yeah. We knoooow Mobile. LOL!

Um, for being an old married chick with a gaggle of kiddies can I just say you totally held up like better than well???? Either you took super-good care of yourself while preggy or your body is a total machine. LOL! Nobody clued me in so I look like I was hit with the pregnancy train then dragged for many miles. Not even diet & exercise can fix what I did to myself. Just wanted to send you props, girl. You look great!

The swimsuit pic. ROFLOL! Tracey was laying in bed next to me & saw that. Wish you coulda seen his face all contorted when he asked "What the $#@!?" It was great! See, now that pic totally illustrates my concerns for dressing myself appropriately. Whenever I try stuff on I'm asking myself & anyone around 2 important questions: 1. Do I look like an old chick who's trying to pretend she's young? And, 2. Do I look like a big girl who doesn't know it? ((Sidenote, not sure if any other girls out there have this issue, but Tracey & I have this ongoing swimwear power struggle thing where I'm like "Babe, I need to give it up and move over to the 1-piece world" and he fights me on it tooth & nail getting all y if I even *look* at a 1-piece saying things like "Whatever, Kelly. You always think you're fat & gross..blah blah blah..Why don't you trust me when I tell you you look good?!" Um, hellooooo...this is the man who said I looked my BEST when I was gigantic pregnant with Fred Flintstone feet & such severe stretch marks that my skin literally tore open! I believe his vision is rather skewed when it comes to how I look.)) Back to what I was saying: I think no matter what size/shape you are you can look good if you dress yourself right. That pic was a definite wrong. There was a time when I wore that type of swimsuit w/the half back on the booty (when I wore them it was called a Brazillian cut, not sure what it's called now) because I had the booty to sport such. Would I wear that now??? Oh heck no! I'm trying to cover or disguise as much as possible. If I thought I wouldn't get crazy looks from people I'd wear a full-on mu-mu from neck to toe. That poor lady in the pic, I fault her family for this. When she put that suit on someone shoulda said something to her. Poor thing.

I know exactly what you mean about wearing the anniversary buttons and getting the comments on not being old enough to be married that long. Y'all must've gotten married fairly young, too. I was 19 & he was 21. When we went to WDW for our 15th we heard that comment frequently, as well. During dinner at CRT a fellow guest heard us say how long we were celebrating and she really made a fuss. I wanted to kiss her! I wonder if we'll hear anything like that again in September when we're there for our 18th...

There's half a thousand comments I thought to make as I was reading thru everything but I couldn't stop to post anything. You know me with my pea-brain and Dory-type memory. Good idea...pretty pictures!...idea gone. :p

I'm totally eating up every ounce of your report. The pics are amazing. Can't wait for more!

I had to laugh when I saw this pic, I thought me and my DH were the onely strange ones who took pics of this guy in that video...

Great report so far!! (I haven't read the next page yet, so it may be over, but I have loved it so far!!!)

Nope, you are totally not the only one! I love these videos and preshows, the do such a good job setting the mood!

Great start, Melanee! I'm thinking you had the right idea starting out the trip with Typhoon Lagoon... your pictures really made me want to take a trip down the lazy river.

I love the gorillapod self-portrait and I think it's awesome that Ben insisted you pick up anniversary buttons! I can definitely see that the two of you have settled nicely into your "Mom and Dad only" trip. I can't wait to read more!

I don't know why more people don't go to Typhoon Lagoon! Every trip we try to make it to at least one of the water parks, and to be honest, we enjoy it more than even DHS and it is in a close race with AK!

I love your trip report so far! And I have to agree with you I love the theme around EE. Its just so, not really sure there are words to describe what I'm trying to say but I know you get it :) Can't wait to read more of your report! And I love all the pictures too!

Enjoy your time! It is so much easier without all the gear that comes with kids! And you can be more flexible with your time which is nice. I missed my boys at times, but for the most part, we enjoyed one another and kept reminding ourselves that this time was important for us.

I love your photos, Melanee! The safari ones are really nice!

Well, I'm glad to hear you sort of liked Jiko...it's our very favorite.

Can't wait to hear more! :)

Jiko was really great! The food was wonderful! I think it was mostly our fault that we came out of there with any negative feelings. We should have a) studied the menu beforehand(so the prices wouldn't shock us) and b) we should not have eaten so much! By the time we left we were so stuffed it was somewhat painful! All the food was delicious however! I think we just got a little too ambitious, wanting to try so many different things at such a special place!

I am loving this report! I have totally been taking that trip with you!
Can't wait for the rest......

Yay! I'm glad you're enjoying it!

:sohappy:

Hi Kelly! Ok, first I should have been more specific...we've lived both in Mobile and Milton(near Whiting Field). Mobile was a longer tour, like 4 full years, and we lived in Milton for a year for Ben's flight training. Mobile really holds a special place in our heart, Milton, not-so-much. :hurl: (although the kids had a really nice school)

Thanks for the sweet compliments. I work pretty hard, but also have to admit I have some good genes. My family are naturally pretty muscular, and I did not get stretch marks in obvious places (that the swimsuit does not cover). I agree though the right clothes make a difference! I have t-shirts, pants and the like that I buy thinking, "Hey I'm going to love these!" then I see pictures of myself in them and immediately throw them out! I am also my own worst critic, something I'm working on letting go of!! Your husband is so sweet that he tells you those things. Maybe you could go the in-between route and find a pretty tankini that you like and are comfortable in? But honestly, you are NOT too old to rock the bikini either!

Totally loving your TR!! You two DEFINITELY don't look old enough to be married 10 years with kids! Good for you guys!

Great pics and I'm looking forward to the next update!

Thanks, that is very sweet of you to say!! More coming up!
