This is a MOM&DAD-ONLY TRIP!!! This is the first ever for us! Of course we have not mentioned to our kids that we are going. They probably will be mad when they learn we went without them. But we couldn’t take them out of school, and frankly, we needed a husband-and-wife only trip. It might be our first real vacation just us in our whole marriage, so ummmm, IT’S ABOUT TIME!!! So let’s get the party started!

PRE-TRIP:

Backstory:

Hello everyone and welcome to my first trip report in a while! I did the math and it had been 502 days in between our trips to Walt Disney World! That is so long!! It had been exactly 420 days since we’d been to Disneyland. So 60 weeks since we’d last stepped foot in a Disney Park of any kind!! It was weird to know we hadn’t visited one at all in 2010. But life has changed and we live all the way across the country now (literally 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean). We got totally spoiled from 2008-2009 living on the Panhandle of Florida, visiting 5 times in that period.

Trip Journal:

Surprise!
Back in August of last year, I started to price out what it would cost for DH and me to head to Florida to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary. That fell through and then I came to peace with not going. Then my awesome, incredible, amazing husband surprised me on our anniversary day with red roses, and a really cute card with his present written inside…One trip to run a Disney Half Marathon!! Wow!

Originally I figured we’d just head down to Disneyland, then after researching when the races were, I knew I didn’t want to wait a whole year to redeem my cool gift (which is how long it would be until the Disneyland one). So I asked DH what he thought about us going to Disneyworld for the Princess Half Marathon in February. He said, “Fo sho!”

So I got to work with planning, as any good DG (Disney Geek-adopted from BigTex71) does. First, had to decide when the vacation would happen…before, after or sandwiching the Princess Half Marathon. Well I’ve run a half marathon before, and I don’t walk very well for a few days afterward. So…I figured it made much more sense to trek around the parks for several days and run the PHM on our very last day. I also figured not everyone coming to run the race would vacation before the race so hopefully the crowds would be minimal. So our tentative dates were February 20th-February 27th! Yay! One thing down. Only bummer is that this would be like week 8 of Winter Term for me for school. I just figured I’d have to work ahead the weeks prior. It’s worth it for a trip to Disneyworld!

A Day Off Property @ Disney is Better than a Day at Home!
Next I looked up places to stay and even called a Disney representative because they can search what dining deals there are and if/how you can swing military room discounts, etc. Unfortunately, Disney really couldn’t offer us much. But I was able to nail down a great reservation at an Armed Forces Vacation Club 2-bedroom timeshare for only $369 for the whole week, the same days we needed! And no, no timeshare presentation required… It’s really close by, and got great reviews from other military families we know. When I factored everything in, Disney’s deals didn’t even come close to matching the savings even if we had to rent a car. I don’t get picky when it comes to where we stay, as long as it means I’m going to Disneyworld, I’m pretty flexible. We do a lot of resort hopping while we’re at Disneyworld anyway. Maybe one day we’ll buy into DVC, and then we’ll start staying at resorts.

Next, I started to analyze park hours and extra magic hours. See, when I know we are staying off-property, I plan around EMH, specifically avoiding parks that have EMH. We also don't park-hop, we just enjoy one park per day. I came up with my outline and laid down ADRs right away. It is SO EASY to get the ADRs you want when it is only 2 people versus our usual 5. Speaking of which, we worked out childcare right around now as well. Luckily, we have a great family who are excited for us and happy to help.

Brand New Dining experiences I have plans/ADRs for:
~ Beaches N Cream (no ADR needed)
~Pizzafari or Restaurantosaurus (no ADR needed)
~Jiko
~Le Cellier
~Raglan Road
~50’s Prime Time Café
~Boston Lobster Feast (@ DH’s request)
~Artist Point
Not new: Crystal Palace (breakfast-DH’s favorite).
I’m really looking forward to all of the dining experiences. I wish we had more time/stomach room for more J

Run Like a Girl!
For the next few weeks, I watched the PHM registration status like a hawk. I knew we’d have to pay for this trip gradually but I didn’t want to end up waiting so long that we couldn’t get in…because it was the reason for the trip in the first place! We missed the first registration price, but I’m glad I waited because over the course of those weeks, DH decided he’d like to run it with me!! *swoon* He’s the best! I love him so much! So when the PHM hit about 65% full, I registered us as a team, and picked Ariel as our princess. I also started searching for cool outfit pieces to wear to make the race even more fun!

A month later, it was time to buy our plane tickets. I was glad we waited on this too because DH learned that he’s got 3 weeks of training in Mobile, AL, which starts…February 28th! The timing couldn’t be better! DH started researching and was able to fix the plane tickets so that his will be paid for since it is work-related. Woohoo!! We just won’t get to fly home together obviously. So we’ll rent a car and drive down to Disneyworld from Mobile, something we are quite familiar with (if y’all don’t remember, we lived there for 5 years prior to moving to Rainy-ville, OR last year).

So in finishing up the details, DH ordered our military tickets through the local morale office, of which he just so happens to be in charge of and it is because of him DisneyWORLD tickets are now available for order. Until recently, we could only buy the military tickets to Disneyland. Did I mention how much I love him?? Somewhere around the same time, I ordered a cute sparkly green skirt and purple running top for the PHM.

25 days out:
We receive our info packet from our resort! YAY!!! Our vacation is starting to feel that much more real. We also file our taxes which is always a nice little bonus.

Another noteworthy subject: running endurance. About 2 weeks ago, DH and I had finally gotten up to running 6 miles. Then DH pulled his calf muscle. PT says he’s out for a few weeks! Yikes! And right in the middle of our training plan. Oh well, this race’s purpose is fun! I’ve gotten back up to 7 miles so far…When I ran the Eugene Half Marathon last year competitively, I’d only gotten up to running 10 miles, and it went really well still. So I know we’ll survive even if the best we do is 7 miles. We’ll do a walk/run combo and take time for character stops and such.

24 days out:

Our WDW tickets arrive!! YAY!!
DSCN0540.jpg

We officially have all our ducks in a row! Now to just save up $$ for meals and FUN! Today it was actually sunny where we live, and I realized I don’t have any sunglasses or flip-flops. Time to go for a little vacation shopping trip. Another detail I worked out was that I booked a wonderful couple’s massage session! I researched all the different offerings on property, then went to the Niki Bryan Spas website (the company that does all of the Spa offerings in and around WDW). As it turns out, the same 50-minute couple’s relaxation massage costs $80 less just by going off property to the main spa!! I can’t wait to surprise DH with a couple’s message session! He’s going to love it. I plugged it into our itinerary for late afternoon on the second day we hit Typhoon Lagoon. *Note: It turns out I suck at surprises. I was so excited I went ahead and told DH ahead of time. His reply was a great big, mischievous smile and “NICE.”

20 Days Out:
Tomorrow we’ll actually be in our vacation month. What an amazing feeling. To tell you the truth, when we moved to Oregon, I figured we wouldn’t realistically be visiting The Happiest Place on Earth while we were here. Plane tickets for 5 are so expensive and I figured now that we live on the West Coast, we would choose destinations such as Hawaii, San Francisco or other warm places to visit while we were here. Disneyland, maybe. But here we are, as our vacation gets closer and closer, and it’s really going to happen! Brings a tear to my eye.

The closer we get to vacation, the more well aware I am that I need to start working harder on the curriculum for this term. I need to be a week ahead before we head out or I’ll be worried about school while we’re there. That is NO BUENO. No worrying while at WDW!! So starting today, I’m hitting the books hard.

See you in the next installment!

Heading Out and Arriving

Friday, February 18, 2011
Today we got up really early and packed the car to head over and meet my aunt, who we dropped the kids off with.

Here was our weather the day we left:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4MxQnCDN1w

We ran late because it was dumping snow on the pass, so we had to drive really slowly. Either way, we met her at McDonald’s, hooked the kids up with happy meals, gave them great big hugs and kisses and said our good-byes for the next 10 days. No tears there. We did ok. I was actually quite surprised. I think it was because it was a bit rushed we didn’t have a chance to linger. It wasn’t until I sat down across from Ben in our booth at McD’s with my yummy maple fruit and oatmeal that it hit me. I started to cry. Surprisingly it wasn’t because I’d dropped the kids off…it was because for the first time in a LONG TIME…we, just Ben and I…were on vacation. It was sinking in. We. Were. On. Vacation!!! I had no idea how long it had been since we had been away from the kids. Yeah, this was overdue.

We headed back to the airport where we’d be spending the night in order to get up for our early 6am flight. We were both hungry so we headed over to Hot n Pot Sushi, a cool place where the sushi travels past you on a conveyor belt and you just pick and choose what you want. Fun!

After that we just shopped around Cascade Station hitting places like Target, Ikea, and Sports Authority. Thankfully we’d also wandered in to GNC where, I realized we hadn’t bought any gels or ShotBlocks for the PHM. We bought a few packs. After a few hours, our food had settled, so we actually decided to hit up the motel gym. FYI this would be the last time I would run prior to the Princess Half Marathon. Then we cleaned up a little and walked over to Buffalo Wild Wings for some drinks, wings and trivia. At about 9pm we headed back to get ready for bed.

Saturday, February 19, 2011
I tossed and turned all night! I hate it when that happens. It always happens when I know I have to be up at an abnormally early hour. Around 3:30am I just went ahead and got up to get ready. Just laying there is pointless anyway. I think I ended up maybe with 5 hours of sleep. I’m a sleeper; lack of sleep does not work for me. I start to feel hung over with even a little lack of sleep. So here was hoping the 5 hours or so would be enough to get me through to about 9-10 pm (Central Time). All I know is that I COULDN’T WAIT TO GET OUT OF THE COLD AND RAIN!!

1:30-ish: Ben and I arrived in Houston around noon (I figuratively waved at you, Kelly!!). Stepping off the plane I got this wonderful smell that reminded me of warm summers!! I could not stop grinning and ran to the window to tell the warm sun how much I’d missed him ;) I’m pretty sure people around thought I was crazy. Right after we found our connecting gate to Mobile, the screen changed, alerting us that the plane was delayed for 5 hours! So we scrambled around to see if we could get on another flight, either Mobile or Pensacola. The best we could do was to get standby passes on a 4:30 flight to Mobile.

We arrived in Mobile around 6pm, and thankfully so did our luggage. It was funny, we moved away a year ago, but as soon as we started to fly over the Gulf Coast, it felt like I’d just left yesterday. We met up with our friend and reconnected, having not seen each other for a while. Then we headed downtown for a great dinner at Joe Cain Café. We had the shrimp pizza and gumbo.

We also toured the beautiful Battle House hotel, a recently renovated historical hotel.

We enjoyed walking around our home city, and we both miss living here.

We hit the hay at around midnight…only 10pm pacific time, but since we’d been up since 3:30am, we were tired and crashed.

Sunday, February 20, 2011:
We woke up to a warm sunny day and a nice southern breakfast courtesy of our friend. Then we attended our old church and got lots and lots of hugs and a wonderful reunion. We miss everyone so much. Since our families live in the northwest, our church really became our family while we lived in Mobile. They still are. And Mobile really has become the place we call home. So it was nice to come home ;)

After church we swung by our old house to check on our renters and make sure everything is going ok. The place looks great, and once again our minds were put at ease. We headed east and stopped briefly at Bass Pro Shop for some great lunch. Sweet tea, fried alligator and catfish and salad. Yum! Then we headed out to Florida! I can’t believe the beautiful weather. Hardly a cloud in the sky, 70s and the most perfect breeze. What a banner day!

Here are a few pics from our journey driving down:

Day 1: Chillaxing at Typhoon Lagoon

Monday, February 21, 2011 (Presidents’ Day)

Ben and I both slept awesome. We loved our resort, it was so beautiful. We were staying at Wyndham Cypress Palms. We joked that it was cooler than our first apartment ;) Today I planned us going to Typhoon Lagoon for a few reasons. First, we learned on a past trip that starting a week at WDW out at a water park simply rocks!! You don’t have to get up super early on your first day, the water parks are totally chillaxing and since it was Presidents’ Day, we figured it would be crazy busy at the bigger parks. We didn’t want to waste a touring day competing with crowds when we’d be there for the rest of the week. So we got up around 7-8 am and Ben headed to the gym here and I went to the store to stock up on some food and coffee. I learned this morning how essential these things are to me for waking up. Whether we were at a hotel or whatever, I gotta have a bite to eat and coffee or I’m a train wreck waking up. We joke that I would never last on Survivor…because they don’t have coffee.

Breakfast and coffee consumed, we were all set and heading on property!

We arrived at Typhoon Lagoon around 10am (opening).

DSC08967.jpg

We love the cute signs along the entrance road that rhyme. For the life of me I can't find it online though, and I didn't take a picture of each sign. Anyway, as Ben and I were driving in, we practically shouted each sign out then ended the poem with "Typhoon Lagoon!!" with all the gusto within us.

Bus Stop

We had to start off at the ticket booth to because we needed to activate our cards. The sun was shining and it was already really warm. We kept murmuring to each other how thankful we were that we didn’t have our kids with us this time. It was nice to have it be so easy.

LOL, what stats? :drevil: LOL. My phone actually died early on in the trip and I lost my phone charger, or I would probably have updated more often. I used DH's iPhone. We had such an awesome trip! I'm working on convincing DH to let me take a trip with him or with a friend so I can run the Disneyland Half and get the covetted Coast to Coast Disney Medal! We'll see. It's in September too, just like your trip!

Once we’d finished that, we headed over to the Storm Slides which were fun as usual and Humunga Cowabunga. I love this slide! It’s steep and exciting but doesn’t last so long that I think I’m going to die. I went down Summit Plummet a few trips back and I swear I saw my life flash before my eyes. Definitely the scariest attraction on property in my opinion.

Here's a few pics from the queue(trail) up to the slides.

Next we hit up Shark Reef because there was very little wait (in fact just about everything we did there was a walk on). Shark Reef was great this time! There was a great big school of yellow fish and in addition to fish I saw several sharks and one sting ray in particular swam quite near me and I got some nice pictures.

Day 1: Chillaxing at Typhoon Lagoon

After this, we sat in the sun for about 20 minutes to dry off, and then started making our way out of the park. I got to stop to browse the shops first(something I loathe doing when we have our kids because they ask for everything), get a snack (Chip and Dale Mickey-Shaped pretzels anyone??) and Ben found our first penny press! Back in 2007, our first trip to WDW, I quickly became addicted to collecting these little pennies. We don’t do pins or vinylmation or anything else, just the pressed pennies.

Day 1: Chillaxing at Typhoon Lagoon

We exited Typhoon Lagoon around 2:00, and headed for The Spa at Lighthouse Key for our couple’s massage appointment.

Our massages were divine!! The day just kept getting better!!

After massages, we hit up Target briefly for snacks and to see if I could get another phone charger, as I’d left mine in Mobile L No luck. Oh well, at least we still had Ben’s phone.

After that, we proceeded back to our resort to get cleaned up for dinner. Ben had really been looking forward to Boston Lobster Feast, and he’d even heard rave reviews online. I agreed, lobster sounded good. This is where the evening sort of went to pot. The place stunk so badly of seafood and the atmosphere is awful there. We had no idea. We thought it would be at least as nice as say, an Olive Garden. Um…no. But, hey…lobster, new restaurant, and we were hungry so we stayed. Most of the sides looked downright disgusting, kind of like something out of National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation ("Green or blue?"). I settled on plain rice, some steamed veggies and lobster. Ben did not eat nearly as much as he usually does. We were very disappointed, especially for the price. Ben filled out a comment card and before I even said anything declared how we will NOT be going back. Yuck.

TMI alert:

Throughout dinner then right after we left, my stomach failed me and I came down with a bought of diarrhea (and to be fair, I don’t believe it was due to Boston Lobster Feast). So, we hit the CVS and called it an early night.

We really had had a great day up til Boston Lobster Feast. We figured an early night couldn’t hurt. The next day we’d be headed to Animal Kingdom and I wanted to have all of my strength!

Your Typhoon Lagoon pictures are great! It was really perfect water park weather in WDW this past week.

I totally hear you on the Chip & Dale Mickey-shaped pretzels! How is it that they taste to much better than regular pretzels??

That's too bad about the lobster place...yikes! Can't wait to read more!!

Day 2: Animal Kingdom and Jiko and a rediculous number of pictures

Tuesday, February 22, 2011: ANIMAL KINGDOM

Today I woke up at 7am and I was feeling great! Yay! There’s always this nervousness that goes along with any yucky feelings on vacation that those feelings are going to lead to something more serious that will floor you and ruin your vacation. Anyway, it was SO great to wake up feeling good! I was actually very hungry. So I got up and made us a nice breakfast, and even set the table. Ben woke up at about 7:30 and we ate together then I got ready quickly and so did he. We left our hotel at about 8:30 in order to get to Animal Kingdom early. I had a huge smile on my face!!

One thing I’ll mention quickly…a new thing that I realized that I miss so much/look forward to/really makes a big part of my experience…the smell and feel of the wonderful warm Florida air. It must be a mixture of how the warmth brings out smells in the local vegetation or something, but it just smells so good in the warm Florida air. Anyway, next time you come down, take a moment and take a few great whiffs of warm, Florida air. You’ll agree, it is a big part of the experience.

We arrived at Animal Kingdom just after 9 o’clock.

092.jpg

I was a little shocked that the parking costs have already gone up $2 since we visited last.
093.jpg

First we proceeded straight to Guest Relations to get our Anniversary buttons. Now, I know we hit our 10-year markback in September, but this trip is the celebration of it. So…we got Anniversary buttons. Ben insisted which was so sweet.

It was a really fun ride as usual! I can't ever remember when the dinos pop out so the thrill never fades no matter how many times I ride. There always seems to be a kid in our ride vehicle whose parents are trying to convince that it won't be scary.

We would have ridden Primevil Whirl next, but it was under refurbishment. Too bad, I love that ride!

Then we headed back toward EE to use our FPs. DH noticed the license plates along the shrubs.
