Look, nothing against Orlando, but we've all been there multiple times and the truth of the matter is WDW is in a different stratosphere than Orlando. I say this in a gentle way. In other words, while close in proximity this is the equivalent of thinking the L.A. riots in 1992 changed the way people came or went to Disneyland. It is just a different group of people that are at a nightclub than at a family-based theme park.

Orlando is a bit like Hollywood, or closer to where I am like in Niagara Falls. What I am saying is that the "touristy" areas are glamorous while once you get off the beaten path it isn't always the nicest neighborhoods. I don't know where this is in Orlando, but I never think of Orlando as a "safe" place to begin with, and I am pretty sure others don't either.

. Ok, but this wasn't because it was in a bad neighbourhood, it was because someone with hate in their heart planned to kill a lot of innocent lives. If it was an altercation, gang etc. I could see your point but this could have happened anywhere.... Look at Paris.. I don't think has anything to do with the area or even the fact it is a gay club. It was simply an excuse for evil. (I'm not trying to argue with you just make a point)

Everyone just has to get on with things as normal regardless though.

Very sad day for the world and I just hope the LGBT community realise that this isn't an attack on them but an attack on humanity and that they stay strong.

A) It's completely irrelevant to this particular crime, what neighborhood it happened in. You make it sound like a beer brawl.

B) WDW has never been just a 'family' park. And again, the type of park it is is irrelevant to the crime, since this is a hate crime backed by an ideology that paints hate with a broad brush.

C) Many park goers visit other parts of Orlando while they are in town. That is why there is a HUGE range of other businesses aimed at tourists.

D) I have lived 2 miles from Disneyland, and in both Paris and San Francisco - two of the most visited cities in the world. All those places have their upscale and down and dirty neighborhoods. I don't understand your point.

Exactly. I'm born and raised in Orlando - lived there for two decades - it's a great city with an amazing community. Obviously there are places in town that are sketchier than others but it's no different from any other city in that regard - by far that does not characterize the city more broadly.

And you're right that that's completely irrelevant - this could have (and unfortunately has) happened anywhere.

Not really heavy indepth reporting here, but that is understandable. This wasn't shaping up to be a great summer anyway. The question is how many people might decide that Orlando is a target. It really isn't -- beyond the MK, anyway.

This was just a sick, sick, evil individual. And it is heartbreaking to see. Indeed, many of these people likely had ties to the theme park community.

Been following the news, so not up on what has and hasn't been talked about here ... and I see threads have been moved (congrats to my friends on that, you accomplished something!) ... but there was an explosion at Shanghai Pudong International Airport today injuring three people. I don't have a link handy, but it looks much worse than it was.

One of the people Killed, Luis Vielma, was a Universal TM on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Universal closed the ride early tonight.

That is horrible. Of course, it's horrible that so many families, so many people will never be the same ... and that there will be more mass murders in the future because we have decided that is the kind of society we want to live in.

I have some friends at UNI and wonder if they knew this man. This is just grotesque beyond belief ... just sick.

Also, recall me telling you that Disney was strongly looking at preventing people from carrying in food and drinks?
I'd expect that to happen within the very near future as well as more invasive security theater.
Wonder what kind of policy they will come up with given the litany of dietary requirements many people have (or claim to have).

Neither.

Pulse is around the corner from ORMC - Literally. Just south of downtown by a mile or so. Not the nicest neighborhood but better than Pine Hills.

The Plaza Live is about 2-3 Miles East of Downtown on Bumby between 408 & S.R. 50. Really nice neighborhood, venue itself is in a strip mall.

We were at the Magic Kingdom earlier today. Bag check was extensive and EVERY GUEST was routed through the metal detectors. Aside from the enhanced security at the entrance, we didn't notice anything different within the park.

On the other coast I was at Disneyland today and it was the same thing. Everyone was directed to the metal detectors and all bags were thoroughly checked. The person in front of me was even asked to completely take off their f-a-n-n-y pack, set it on the on the table zipped open so it could be inspected.

It'll happen if it happens.

Until then don't let them win. Be vigilant and aware. Just like you would anywhere else.

And honestly - just statistically - lightning definitely hits twice - it's just very rare. It's doubtful that every bad-doer in the world is heading to Orlando.

As terrible and senseless this act was, driving in Orlando is still far more dangerous.

I don't take terrorism lightly, I went to school with a few guys that died in 9/11.. But, I lost many more from high school to car accidents.

To be fair, when I went last month, they were sending everyone through the metal detectors at MK some days. I gather the level of security theater is linked to daily threat levels.

I noticed a significantly lower proportion going through the metal detectors at the other three parks.

One particularly quiet evening at DHS, they weren't sending ANYONE through. Metal detector guy was just sitting at the table next to the detector chilling. I guess terrorists wouldn't attack DHS on a night with a 20-min wait for RnRC?
