Honestly, I love this renewed rivalry between the two resorts.

I as well, but this is the FIRST time that WDW has been in a position of weakness. UO, SW, and even LegoLand and Busch are in positions of strength right now and that's why this is so fascinating!

In the eyes of some perhaps. But look at the attendance and revenue of them. No comparison.

Always falls back onto this argument, doesn't it?

Yes, WDW will always have more visitors and revenue, we get it by now.

Spiderman is about to become the best dark ride (yet again) with these upgrades and you argue attendance and revenue.

Typical fanboi argument, it's really getting stale.

Hey steady on the insults, the use of fanboi is getting very stale. Regardless of what you think, Walt Disney World is in a different league of attendance, revenue and profit compared to any of the parks you list. They are the facts.

Absolutely agreed.

That said, there's only so long a monolithic presence in a given market can maintain that giant lead whilst continually degrading their product and shooting themselves in the foot.

Witness Microsoft and Apple. About a dozen years ago the thought that Apple would ever be eating Microsoft's lunch would have been comical. Yet, that very thing has come to pass via excellence, vigor, and imagination on one side, and complacency and lack of successful innovation on the other.

What Disney needs to realize is that nostaliga is driving an enormous part of their theme park business: I fondly recall my parents taking me when I was a child so I, in turn, take my own and relive the experience. But the true magic of those times in my childhood is that Disney World was a genuinely unique place with the absolute cutting edge in theme park experiences. The moment a competitor begins to encroach on that, and Universal certainly is with Harry Potter at the moment, and the generational memory begins to turn.

Disney's been transitioning from "awesome" to "nice" over the past 15-20 years. They need to go back to being "awesome" lest they lose the multi-generational angle of their business.

Well said.

Even your analogy is spot on.

Not only did you steal my thought, but converted it into something much more articulate.

Attendance and money are on the side of Disney, and likely always will be, but why? Is it more to do with what has been previously established, with what has been more recently established, or an equal partnership of the two?

I lean more toward what has been previously established. I don't subscribe to the thought that everything new is bad, but the reasons behind why people have come to WDW since the 70s are apparently beginning to be abandoned. The traditional is being abandoned for the untraditional, innovation for replication and maximum profit. These principles should be equally intigrated. Too much of one over the other is a mistake ie building stripped down parks with no attractions and expecting people to visit. Or abandoning the immersiveness of created environments which your success has been built upon.

I agree, great analogy.

I totally agree that Disney kills UO in those two categories, and will continue to do so. I don't think anybody would ever argue against that. However, Applebees kills my local independent restaurant in those two categories as well. Guess which one I'd prefer to eat at? That's not to say I prefer UO to Disney, but 4 years ago I never would have considered taking a day away from my WDW vacation to go to UO and now I'm hoping to spend at least two days away from WDW the next time I'm in Orlando.

I think that when FLE opens it will give Disney/ Magic Kingdom that WOW factor it once had. The work done so far looks EPIC and will stand strong next to IOA's Potter. All of the Disney parks are lacking that WOW. Avatar will refresh AK big time. Hopfully Disney can keep up the pace. We just need a big bang project to be built at Epcot and DHS.

but isn't that what most of harry potter is? while forbidden journey is WOW all around, surely you could suggest that hogsmeade is basically some well themed shops. let's face it, if forbidden journey didn't exist, would people be amazed by the area? i don't think so.

But it does exist. And it's easily one of the best themed attractions anywhere on the planet, surrounded by one of the best themed lands.

Nothing in the FLE will be anywhere close to the best ride/experience in the park, let alone anywhere.

I agree...Forbidden Journey is AMAZING...I thought it was probably the best thing I've ever been on, and amazingly well themed...But the rest? The 'rollercoaster' is just an old ride they re-imagined as a Hippogriff, and then rest, although well themed, is shops. Pretty, nicely disguised shops...but shops.

I know a lot of the same could be said about Disney, but to me, there is NO comparison between Universal and WDW. When I am in Universal, it definitely feels more to me like an amusement park, and last time I was there their were posters everywhere advertising how to upgrade this, upgrade that, spend more here, spend more there....

Disney to me has always felt like an experience. I think the attention to detail is way beyond anything anywhere else. It feels like more than just an amusement park to me. Is Universal ahead of the game in some ways? Yes. Will it ever replace or outdo Disney? I really don't think so.
