Well, considering the release from Screamscape came out today, I'm not seeing much in the way of "upstaging" ongoing events of the day at WDW.

Edit: And has Universal released the "sneak peek" into the new Spidey ride that this thread was for originally?

...i already know im going to regret jumping into this one...but oh well..

First off..its very clear you have a grudge against WDW. Yes you have your opinions, but you yourself said you were "let go"..which i'm sorry..would make anyone even a bit upset..even if you hated the job. Its lost income. That being a known fact makes it hard to read any of your extremely passionate posts without a looming sense of extreme bias.

Now that I got that out of the way:

As a big fan of both company's parks...I can honestly say that I (and a LOT of people i've spoken to) were left very underwhelmed with a lot of what BOTH companies have been doing lately.

Lets start with the big one first: Potter. Awesome first impression...got boring REAL fast. The ride, yes...its fun. Is it "the most amazing ride ever"?. Hardly. It has its flaws (out of focus cameras being a constant one from my dozens of times being on it). A lot of people are very passionate about harry potter just as much as people are of disney, and base their opinions on a ride on that emotion.

Lets go for the other side of the county...Avatar. Sure..huge movie. Mass appeal? not so much. Potter destroys the attraction of Avatar ANY DAY (in my book at least)..and has a much broader audience. I think that disney can do a good job with this, but I know that it will leave me just as bored as i fear. The franchise is still in its beginning stages...and can easily end up being horrible with the next 2 installments (ie: the matrix), and thus end up effecting the popularity of a themed land. To invest all that money into an obvious "panic mode" addon, left me very disappointed. I would have much rather seen them invest that money into doing something they came up with themselves (beastly kingdom..i mean come on!)

So how about "improving whats already there". I go back to IOA: Spiderman. The ride is fun. I wont deny them that. The Upgrades are more than welcome. But to say this will make the ride the "best dark ride again" is a bit..overzealous. The ride isn't changing that much that it will be a completely different experience. Its getting a much needed polish...and I'm all for that.

But similar to how Disney is doing with Test Track. Was it bad before? no. Did it NEED to be updated? Yep. Do I think it will make it "the best fast ride on the planet again"...no.

The point I'm trying to make is, you can't slam one and ignore the other. In my personal opinion (see that word there?), I think they are both doing a great job of updating and expanding...each in their own ways. Competition is great for business, and I don't see either one of them as "winning" in that aspect.

P.S...to say disney was "upstaged" was a bit extreme as well. I was at the 24 hour event, and that place was packed. So I will go out on a limb here and say it was a huge success.

In many people's eyes, Spider-Man is only competing with Forbidden Journey for the title of "best dark ride." You obviously disagree based on your comments about FJ, but if this upgrade makes those people favor Spider-Man again, it isn't being overzealous. I personally never stopped considering it the best dark ride, even before the upgrades. I also think we need to wait and *see* the upgrades before judging how much of a difference they make.

Actually to clarify a bit...When I first rode spiderman I was FAR more impressed than I was when I first rode FJ. Both are great dark rides, and spiderman will always hold a high rank in my book...and Im very glad to see it getting upgrades. But that being said...will it be the top dark ride forever? Of course not. And I don't mean just vs. Disney.

Queue. And the green house is still lovely looking.

And Mummy DOES have zizagging lines in it's queue. You just never see them because it isn't as crowded. And I like how you conveniently forget to mention the castle itself, the One-eyed Witch passage, the hogwarts entrance, Dumbledore's office, Defense Against the Dark Arts Classroom, the talking portraits, the Gryffindor Common Room, and the Sorting Hat.

Nice.

The lack of understanding you have for the ride system and thematic depth astounds me.

Maybe its just my lack of interest in Harry Potter because I have no idea what any of those things are that you just mentioned  Also, The Mummy queue is themed well enough that you don't notice the zigzags. Just my opinion though.

So, just out of curiosity, what would you consider to be the best dark ride (of any park)?

Its hard to choose a defined winner...mostly because what makes a good dark ride to ME will easily be different than what makes a good ride for somebody else. I think themeing outweighs "thrill" any day..so that being said its a close call between

MIB at universal (seriously impressive amount of theme work went into that)

or

Indiana Jones in Disneyland. For the same reason.

Fair enough. I like Spider-Man, FJ, and Indiana Jones as well. The stark differences between Indy and Dinosaur really illustrate your point as to the power of theming.

I like MIB too, but I think that the "interactiveness" of the ride distracts a bit from how well themed the whole thing really is. I think I'll try riding without shooting at the aliens so that I can take in more of the atmosphere. I'm not sure why I never thought of doing that before. :)

I would Have to agree that Harry Potter isnt my favorite dark ride ever and neither is spiderman....BUT both are some of my favorites. They both rely to much on screened images and not really placing the guests into different worlds....idk just my opinion. My favorite dark rides are Indiana jones and dinosaur. I know this is kind of weird because they are the same ride but to me both have there own unique themeing and both work within the park. I mean trying to beat out the best dinosaur franchise"jurassic Park" is pretty hard to do and I think Disney did in fact make a better dinosaur ride. And Indy....well there isnt much to say except its awesome!:sohappy:

Eh, I hate threads like this. I'm so happy with what Universal has done with the resort, but then you have people on here acting like 5th graders insulting WDW. In some weird way, it reflects poorly on Universal.
