Daily Discussion Question:
When it comes to armchair imagineering, what's your favorite aspect of a park to think up and design?
Rides and attractions, especially their story. One thing I think is fun is thinking about how to make rides sort of "realistic". I ask myself: why - in this story - do I want/have to get on this vehicle? Why does this vehicle do this, why does it go that way and so on? And I try to come up with a story that also answers those questions. I particularly like this aspect

The story behind a ride - making sure that it's not only a fun ride, but instead a captivating story; personally, that's why I enjoy coming up with new stories rather than relying on existing IP whenever possible. A close second would be leveraging all aspects of a ride to tell the story - aligning the queue, ride story, cast members, and actual ride experience in a cohesive way (Tower of Terror does this best IMO)

Well, with some fresh faces joining the competition alongside familiar ones, I think it might be fun to give some time to a practice prompt! Though there won't be any points this round, it's a chance to get your gears a-turning as you get into the mindset for this competition with some practice. Plus, it'll give me a chance to practice writing critiques.

Practice Prompt: Mary Poppins

Before we get the ball rolling on the main competition, I thought it might be good to give folks a chance to practice at making a pitch, particularly with this slightly unorthodox set-up. So, I’ll give you that chance with an IP that most armchair imagineers have probably thought about: Mary Poppins.

Frankly, it’s kind of surprising that there has not really been major Mary Poppins representation besides meet and greets at any of the parks over the years, considering it’s probably the most beloved of Disney’s live-action films. You would think that making that sequel Mary Poppins Returns would help spin the wheels a bit, but still nothing yet. I know Disney had announced some kind of attraction for the United Kingdom Pavilion at Epcot, but considering the economic hit and how they never even gave any details about the attraction, I’d bet they’ll just quietly shelve the project.

So, let’s run with that. Let’s imagine how the practically perfect nanny could be featured in the UK Pavilion.

-Prompt-
Pitch a method of implementing Mary Poppins or Mary Poppins Returns at the United Kingdom Pavilion at Epcot. It can be an attraction, a restaurant, whatever you wish.

-Rules-
Use only a single sentence to describe your idea. You may also use one image if you wish. The deadline is Sunday, December 13th, at 11:59:59 PM EST.

-Tips-
KISS – Keep is simple, silly! With only one sentence, you can’t get too detailed. Think of this as an elevator pitch.

-Judging Criteria-
Is it creative?
Is it realistic?
Does it fit visually/thematically?

What Disney IP do you wish had more representation at the parks?
All the answers so far have been summing up my base thoughts, but one ride I've always wanted to see was one based on meet the robinsons. It's just perfect for a ride in tommorrowland or even epcot if they go in a sorta Horizons-esque dark ride direction. Heck even a simple theater show can do.

Good question! I think my favorite thing is coming up with ideas oddly enough. I go for a sorta pixar esque mindset where I go for the second or third idea I come up with most of the time, though occassionally I do go for the first. Coming up with a lot of oddball ideas and fitting a ride around them is always so much fun!

Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Carousel

As a way of implementing Mary Poppins into the parks without spending TOO too much money, Disney adds a small carousel to the United Kingdom pavilion based on the one in the movie's "Jolly Holiday" sequence, with at least twenty horses for guests to climb aboard and music straight from the film.

Mary Poppins' Marvelous Mystical Rather Shipsensational Tub Boats

1607791679069.png

Inspired by the Storybook Canal Riverboats, Mary Poppins Marvelous Mystical Rather Shipsensational Tub Boats sees guests board a rather large bathtub boat piloted by a sailor and their large beach umbrella rudder; guests are taken on a sailing expedition through the fantastical world of Mary Poppins passing by the stables and penguin restaurant from Jolly Holiday, the carousel from the Chalk Drawing, the horse races from Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, the big top from Royal Doulton Music Hall, Nellie Rubina, Lady Hyacinth Macaw and the Dirty Rascal from A Cover is Not the Book, and finally an indoor portion taking guests underwater past the sights of Can You Imagine That.

MARY POPPINS' JOLLY GARDENS

We British do love our gardens, so combined that with Mary Poppins and you create a lovely jolly time in an enchanted garden straight from Bert's chalk drawing, complete with a merry-go-round, a "bobbing horse track" ride based on magical floating carousel horses, and two separate restaurants, the Penguin Cafe, and Uncle Albert's Laughstaurant; in a further expansion, an indoor dark ride based more on the film as a whole would be introduced.

The Jolly Holiday in the Park Chalk Drawings
1607904628382.png

The pathways in the back of the UK Pavilion will be partially replaced with special screens that look like sidewalks and pavement that have chalk drawings on them, but at random times these chalk drawings come to life in a very simple and enchanting way helping the entire pavilion to feel a little more magical while still keeping the pavilion mostly grounded in real life.
