Time Zone

utopiavsdystopia-720x340.png

Dubbed an awful film in all matters of the world, In Time was an disappointment to all because it had such a great premise - time is a currency which people trade, hoard, and waste just like real money and everyone gets 25 years for free - but awful execution (36% on Rotten Tomatoes), which Disney hopes to correct in its new land, the Time Zone.

The land is set in a much more well-off area of the urban city of Los Angeles, and will be taking over the area around the Tower of Terror.

Hollywood Studio's most iconic ride (Tower of Terror) becomes Journey from the Time Mines, where we play the role of desperate workers who want to steal a bunch of time from their corrupt boss, who lives on the top floor of the giant tower.

After this land opens, Disney remakes the movie (that FOX owns) to be much of a social commentary about wage gaps and answers the big question of the movie (how do the rich have sooooo much time; Answer: they mine humans....).

BONUS: Build a boutique hotel where guests are trying to uncover clues and rob a Time Vault together as the story.
I haven’t seen In Time, and I’d totally forgotten about it until now. Just (re)watched the trailer. That’s undeniably an intriguing premise, but nothing about the existing film (including its visuals as advertised) seem too appealing.

It seems your land would be based instead on your proposed Disney-produced remake. In this very hypothetical scenario, that is realistic. And this is definitely the kmbmw who’s busy constantly improving the DCEU! So basically, a new sci-land on a cool time/money premise.

If I were a Disney exec (oh boy!), I’d be closer to greenlighting your remake than your DHS land. The latter is basically a Tower of Terror overlay, which sounds risky. But your idea of using sci-fi cinema to explore class warfare in the U.S.? That I want to see!

Bonus: Would it ruin immersion to let guests over age 25 into this hotel?

Plastic Land
View attachment 266047
A land based on the film Mean Girls, you are transported to North Shore High School which will be a pavilion in Disney's Hollywood Studios housing all of the attractions. The Burn Boat is a flume ride through the tears of all the people who Regina and the Plastics have made fun of over the years and at the end of the ride you get to eat ice cream. The Cafeteria is a quick service restaurant that allows you to pick a clique to sit with, and The Limit Does Not Exist is a trackless ride through the school trying to run away from Regina after she finds out that the nutrition bars make her gain weight.

Bonus
A Boutique Resort themed to a sleepover with Regina's Mom's House (The Cool Mom)
Is Mean Girls a bad movie?! It has strong box office and a good Rotten Tomatoes score, so no, it’s a good movie. Perhaps you find its message or worldview to be repulsive? I dunno, I’ve only watched the trailer (get me more time, @kmbmw777, and I’ll watch every bad movie ;)).

Anyway. Mean Girls is set in a modern high school. That doesn’t really scream “theme park land.” Almost the opposite, which seems to be your self-imposed creative challenge. The ride ideas are creative within these limitations, but by necessity they are incredibly abstract. Certain elements, particularly The Cafeteria with its dining experience reminiscent of Prime-Time Diner, sounds like winners.

Bonus: Sounds fetch.

John Carter: The Land of Mars
View attachment 266046

John Carter was one of the biggest flops in recent memory but it did have on thing going for it, it's beautiful scenery; with it being a Disney IP, it already made sense to take that extra step to create a whole land around this beautiful planet (saves money that can be focused towards the land) to replace the Indiana Jones area including the expansion area south of it.

The land will look like an early settlement just moved into this area of mars with no large buildings up but lots of movement throughout the land; a large mountain set can be seen at the far end of the land to serve as a backdrop while also holding the E-ticket attraction.

The first of two attractions will be a large, E-ticket, fantasyland dark ride, The Thark War will feature guests team up with John Carter and the Tharks to defeat the Warhoons once and for all in a ride vehicle designed after a Thark ship where the ride vehicle system is the EMV system to really immerse guests into the battle.

The C-ticket trackless flat ride for the land, The Woola Dance, will feature guests sitting on one of the best creatures from the film, the Woola, as they celebrate the anniversary of John Carter landing on the planet (this attraction would be similar to Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters).

A small quick service restaurant will be next to The Woola Dance to provide guests with some snacks or drinks designed after food seen in the film while Sab Than's Market features all the John Carter related merchandise any fan could want!

Bonus:
The Hotel will be inspired after the hidden temple John Carter finds in the film where he learns of the way back home; all CM's will look like Tharks while the river hidden in the temple will constantly lead guests on new journeys.

YES! YES! There were a few “correct” proposals for this challenge, and this is one of them (alongside The Lone Ranger). Whatever we may think of John Carter the movie, it would make for a fantastic theme park land. Your descriptions realize its potential, with something very much fitting the Disney Parks style despite this challenge’s strange premise.

The Thark War could be the EMV version of Shanghai’s Pirates. It has the potential to be a true game-changing E-ticket. The rest of the land’s elements are there to support it, which they do with a rich and vibrant texture. Really, the only very petty nitpick is distinguishing Carter’s “planetary romance” from Galaxy’s Edge’s “space opera.”

Bonus: Riding the riverways into DHS would be an incredible immersing experience. Dressing all cast members as Tharks, complete with four arms, that would be a tremendous challenge.

Momworld
View attachment 266094Based on the splendid film “Mars Needs Moms,” guests will have a chance to explore “Momworld,” a theme park land made by Martians to attract mothers and their families to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, robbing families of their money and mom’s. Taking over the space once occupied by Fantasmic comes the “Momworld Carnival,” where guests can ride on “brainwashing devices” disguised as cheap flat rides with cheap theming to cover up the alien plots. In an overlay of Tower of Terror, guests can experience ABDUCTION!, where guests can be lured into an alien ship museum that crash landed in the middle of Hollywood Studios on the premise of taking a tour, but once you are in your pods, you rise and fall to escape an ABDUCTION!

BONUS:
Moms can book a solo, two night “Mars Takes Moms” experience, where the mother, who booked without her families knowledge, will appear to be violently taken by alien guards that look like they should be in The Polar Express, only to be taken to a luxury resort built on the backside of the tower of terror for a kid free night!
What is the deal with movies about Mars? This is a good choice for the challenge – a Disney flop with a unique setting and visuals. The land as you describe it, I think, is sort of a sci-fi version of Chester & Hester’s. Is that right? Like, it’s a willfully chintzy fake carnival with a deeper backstory?

Okay, so I haven’t seen this little-seen box office bomb, and maybe that’s an idea from the movie. Let’s go with it! All sounds pretty neat so far. Then there’s the Tower of Terror overlay – we’re seeing quite a lot of TOT overlays in this challenge – and eliminating/redoing the best ride in DHS just seems like such a zero-sum lateral move to me. Entirely new rides would be better! (Full confession: I’m not 100% warmed up to Mission: BREAKOUT yet.)

Bonus: :hilarious: What an amusing hotel concept! A vacation-within-a-vacation for moms. The “violent” abduction might be a little traumatizing…for their husbands.

The World of the Pagemaster

s-l300.jpg

Guests enter through a Library facade only to find themselves not inside a building, but in the enchanting and magical World of the Pagemaster; adding literature to the many media based themes of Hollywood Studios (which currently includes movies, tv, and music).

Much like how the main character in the Pagemaster (the kid from Home Alone) is transported into the world of books and has to travel with his talking book companions (Horror (voiced by Frank Weller), Adventure (voiced by Patrick Stewart), and Fantasy (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg)) through their respective sections, guests will be transported to a courtyard featuring Dr. Jekyll's Castle, Adventure Island, and the Dragon's Mountain to represent the three genres.

The main attraction will be an E-Ticket Splash Boats Dark ride (like Jurassic Park River Adventure) through the world's of books including encounters with Frankenstein's Monster, Mr. Hyde, Ahab and the White Whale, Long John Silvers and his pirate crew, Oberon & Titania (the fairy royalty from a Midsummer Night's Dream), Puck, and a climactic encounter with the dragon before splashing down.

The boat ride will be narrated by Christopher Lloyd who played the Librarian in the film and, while it features many of the same literary worlds and characters, will not follow the plot of the movie, but it will be about a tour through the wonders of literature.

Other features of the land will include a Treasure Island themed ropes course/playground for kids, The Beanstalk (a QSR housed in a building that seems to have Jack's Beanstalk growing right through it), the Pagemaster's Bounty (a store featuring books and literature/Pagemaster themed merchandise), and a walkthrough Haunted How attraction themed to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde aimed at older guests and done similarly to a Halloween Horror Nights Maze.

Bonus

Guests will get to the chance to stay in Dr. Jekyll's Castle as a new boutique resort where the rooms a haunted and horror awaits (For authenticity, Disney will actually kill a different person in every room during construction so each room will be legitimately haunted!).

Oh wow, I remember seeing this movie once, like 80 years ago! What’s most brilliant about your proposal, Pi, is how you’ve massaged the challenge’s loopholes to create a backdoor literature world. That is, The Pagemaster barely really matters one way or the other. This is really a land for Mr. Hyde, Moby-Dick, Treasure Island, and honestly any other classic novel you could think of for ever and ever. I really like the justification that DHS already covers film, TV and music; a new park name might be needed to cover this multi-media focus.

As always, your sentences are bulging with evocative details, painting a world I can readily picture. For DHS specifically, this sounds like a wise family-friendly addition with a lot of potential appeal, even though The Pagemaster holds roughly 0 name recognition. Good attraction variety too.

Bonus: Disney will kill someone for every single hotel room??!?! You’re lucky these bonus points are automatic!

Fantasia Square

This land will take us into a world of music and magic as we go through a few of the 8 segments from Disney's Fantasia; originally a huge failure that nearly ruined Walt's career, this movie got a substantial following in the drug filled 60's.

The first ride will be a C-ticket teacups style ride where guest will get to choose either a hippo or alligator themed seat as they spin and dance around each other, themed to Dance of the Hours.

Next will be a slightly technologically upgraded Fantasyland style dark ride themed to the mouse himself Sorcerer Mickey, as we join him in "floating" water buckets on a basic play by play of the short with some nicer screen effects.

Lastly will be the lands E-ticket ride, A journey to Bald Mountain, where the guests will join the souls of the damned summoned to the top of bald mountain, encounter Chernobog himself, and then rush down and around to escape the deamon in this high speed indoor coaster.

Food will be found at the Pastorial, a basic QSR with one or two greek menu items and indoor seating designed after the segment of the same name; merchandise will be located in a Nutcracker Suite themed shop that shall sell gifts based on all Fantasia shorts directly next to a walk through fairy garden based on the same segment.

Bonus: This beautiful new hotel will let you stay in one of the four sesaons based around the Nutcracker Suit segment.
There was some controversy around Fantasia the “bad” movie. It technically qualifies for the challenge, since it originally flopped with audiences and critics. But as one of the 100 Greatest Films Ever by current standards, Fantasia is extremely far from the Battlefield Earth/Robot Monster awfulness this challenge had in mind.

Still this is easily the most realistic proposal. Fantasia is Disney, it’s popular and it’s underrepresented. Everything you propose, the wide variety of rides and amenities, fits Fantasia very well and in true Disney Parks fashion. There’s probably a specific “studio park” approach to this musical masterpiece which would make Fantasia Square more than simply a Fantasyland in another park, but this is an incredibly solid foundation. A little more Fantasia 2000 would’ve been nice, even if the challenge only specified one movie.

Challenge 11 results

Lots of variety in this round, as the “bad movie” definition could go in so, so many ways. If I were competing, I’d’ve likely done an Ed Wood land entirely in black & white, and connected that to the Sci-Fi Dine In. No matter what, it’s fascinating to see how we all approached this challenge from different angles – embracing the awfulness, exploiting loopholes, picking strange and obscure forgotten movies which we love. Interesting stuff!

GRAND FINALE CHALLENGE
DECEMBER

Christmas has now come and gone. You’ve seen your family, enjoyed the feast, sung the carols and snogged under the mistletoe. But this following morning is still more exciting, because in your country they unbox presents on the 26th. That’s because you’re British, and today is –

BOXING DAY
39217183352_5c22668e2a_o_d.jpg

Boxing Day is still celebrated in places that once formed the British Empire, places like Hong Kong Disneyland. So for the grand finale let’s go to Disney’s smallest castle park, a park once derided as underbuilt. New lands have fixed this, from Mystic Point to Grizzly Gulch. Upcoming additions based on Marvel and Frozen should continue that. But even then, one major expansion pad shall remain in the park’s bottom corner between Grizzly Gulch and Adventureland, behind the train tracks.

26555698608_d92ac9da6c_b_d.jpg

-Challenge-
Propose Hong Kong’s final land for that pad! Give it rides, shops, dining, the whole shebang!

-Bonus-
With one additional sentence, give your land a cute original character, someone like Mystic Manor’s Albert or Journey into Imagination’s Figment. Doing so will net you an automatic extra point!

-Double Bonus-
The Hong Kong Disneyland Resort boasts three hotels – Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Explorers Lodge, and Disney’s Hollywood Hotel. With one additional sentence, propose their fourth hotel to go in the designated expansion space. Doing so will net you another extra point!

40383055122_91c86080b5_b_d.jpg

-Super Ultra Mega Double Bonus-
There’s a park-sized expansion pad directly across from HKDL. With yet another additional sentence, briefly propose the theme for Hong Kong’s second park! Doing so will net you a whopping 2 extra points!

38615926540_20b56c0c27_o_d.jpg

-Rules-
In addition to the bonus sentences, you may use between 1 and 5 sentences and up to 1 image. (It’s an entire land, so a couple extra sentences might be useful.) The deadline is Wednesday, February 28th, at midnight EST.

-Tips-
K.I.S.S. – Keep it simple, silly. Try not to complicate or overthink things too much. It’s a simple, casual competition – there are no eliminations. Propose as you please!

-Judging Criteria-
Is it creative?
Is it (generally) realistic?
Does it fit thematically/visually?

Good luck everyone! If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask. This is the final challenge, so go nuts with it! Now go create!

Citric Circus
6.jpg

This new land will be themed to a magical traveling bug circus, unrelated to the one in a bugs life. The rides will include the hoops of fire, which is a rollercoaster where guests ride a dragonfly that does tricks, including barreling through hoops that are on "fire" and escaping dangers in the house, such as "spray" and "the cat". There will also be a dark ride (more about that in the bonus) and a new magic show starring mickey mouse. The shops include the magic shop, which will have magic props and interactive magic displays and carnistuff which includes gag gifts, carnival related toys and more. The dining includes popcorn stands, corndog stands, and the carni cafe, which will have the waiters on stilts or on unicycles.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bonus 1: The new dark ride will be called circus shootout. It will have guests enter one of the magic tents where they meet buzzo the bee. Buzzo takes guests through a small hole in a kitchen where guests see different bug circus acts, with interactive areas to shoot at to cause crazy things to happen, such as items falling over, setting off sprays, etc.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bonus 2: The new hotel will be the mystic hotel, which will be themed to a hotel that just suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Strange interactive elements will be in the hotel that will set off with guests not having to be near a button.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bonus 3: The second park's theme will be Westcot. Exactly the same as the planned westcot. The end.

Discovery Wharf
1519868968121.png

Adding a little bit of seafood, a lot of California and a distinctly Hong Kong touch to Disneyland is Discovery Wharf!

The Discovery unfolds just as you pass under an arch from Grizzly Gulch with a sight of the mesmerizing but wavey waters crashing against the wood of where the action is happening; the town of Cape Carp focuses on the discovery of new marine animals, and with a story akin to DLP's Frontierland, its backstory propels it to the past the water's edge!

Boasting two attractions: The Waters Edge (E-ticket) and a carousel, it's a perfect blend of every interest; not to mention a mega Ghirardelli shop, and since Ghirardelli sponsors the land, you'll find epic desserts at the fine dining restaurant The Fog House and at the delightful outdoor sardine & squid serving Triton's.

Yet with all these wonders, there's a reason it has Discovery in its name: the area has been known for shipwrecks with people wanting to explore the foggy waters, but when the town goes to sleep, the town is reminded of those lost at sea!

And with Shanghai's POTC technology put to work at The Waters Edge, this is truly a once in a lifetime voyage; just remember, don't trust the seagulls;).

First
Monsieur Édouard
The one and only owns an exploration and tour company with his equally arrogant wife, Lea, that takes you through the vast ocean, but be warned, his tours only depart at night, and in Cape Carp, things go awry at night!
Second

The Bayou Inn
The one, the only, Louisiana's, Bayou Inn is nestled on Discovery Bay; besides the elaborate theming, the most prominent features are the swimming pool that makes it seem like a lagoon filled with actual gators is part of the pool, and Tiana's, which rests in Discovery Bay and easily rivals Be Our Guest with a touch only Disney can do, and its epic jazz-filled comedy show while you eat the delicacies of the South!
Third

Hong Kong DisneyEarth

Behold, half a dozen ecosystems from "The Tundra" (artic) to "The Deep" (ocean) transport you to what makes our planet beautiful, and you, the test subjects, for education and experimentation will be in different environments with state-of-the-art technology; taking place from the year 2,100 and beyond, this epic 'facility' was built to celebrate the world being 100% green and is made with peace by all the countries in the world for the world.
I actually really want to expand on this concept at some point:joyfull:

The Wasteland
b7c8f33ed26bb2b5f3bb5babd7a9c2e1.png

Welcome to the Wasteland: a world torn to near destruction by nuclear warfare, and what is left of mankind is barely a shell of mankind's former glory with a sole focus on surviving rather than thriving.

This version of the Wasteland takes us into Chicago's Drake Hotel, which is currently a luxurious hotel at the end of the Magnificent Mile, but has been reinterpreted to be where some of the sane members of mankind are living in hiding.

The land is almost all indoors, and features a quick service restaurant called The Mess Hall which is hosted in the Drake's tea room (which in real life, is adjacent to the lobby) and a shop called The Stuff Shop.

To access the land's singular E-Ticket, descend the ramp into the garage beneath the hotel, where a jeep powered by literal garbage (very eco-friendly) waits to bring you to explore the nuclear wasteland that is Chicago.

In the thrilling EMV E-Ticket called Armageddon Chicago, we explore some of Chicago's most recognizable locations to try and find a new home for the citizens of Drake City, as they are running low on resources; however, most of the locations are very dangerous as Wrigley Field is being used as a gladiator tournament for savages, the shops on the Mag Mile are in chaos, and Navy Pier is overrun by a military-like faction.

Bonus One: Exorian (Exo) Darkh is the current mayor of "Drake City," and is wearing the nicest clothes (which are still tattered) of all of the survivors, which shows his elevated class which you can see when he gives you your mission in the E-Ticket.

Bonus Two: Stark Industries Workshop is a new boutique hotel where guests play the roles of CIA agents (led by Black Panther's own Moss) investigating Tony Stark for violating the Sokovia Accords.

Bonus Three: Disney's Hidden Frontier will feature immersive single-IP or no-IP lands, that are all connected via a crashed spaceship in the center.

Chilly Caverns
Screen Shot 2018-02-28 at 11.53.25 PM.png

Welcome to Chilly Caverns, a new themed area at Hong Kong Disneyland, where you enter a cave found inside of a snowy mountain, where this land will be found, kept inside to keep the climate controlled, to keep you fully immersed in this world.

There will be 1 restaurant, The Chilly Caverns Cafe, which is a restaurant inside a snow and ice filled cave with screens and animatronics showing the animals of the cavern, and 1 gift shop, the Snowy Trading Post, which is found outside of the building at the entrance from Grizzly Peak.

When visiting Chilly Caverns, you can ride the Journey through the Caverns, using the technology from Test Track, where you can board your snowmobile with 5 other guests and travel through the caverns, and go deeper and deeper exploring new caverns before the caverns start to melt and collapse on you, which is when you speed up to 50mph racing out of the caverns around the land.

Another attraction is the Arctic Mountain Falls, which is a log flume with animatronics where you join a group of explorers on an exploration through an Arctic Mountain and the Polar Bear Adventure, which is a trackless dark ride where you join Polly the Polar Bear throughout her quest to feed her family and save her cubs from predators.

This new themed area coming to Hong Kong Disneyland will sure to be a hit with guests as it takes you out of the hot climate of Hong Kong and into the chilly climate of the Arctic, with a touch of Disney.

Bonus: Polly the Polar Bear is the mother of Snowflake the Polar Bear, which is a polar bear cub that lives in the land and has his own play area “Snowflake’s Polar BEar Playground”.

Double Bonus: Hong Kong Disneyland will be receiving a value resort titled, Disney’s Grand Americas Hotel, where it is laid out similar to the All Stars and each wing is themed to a different location in the USA.

Super Ultra Mega Double Bonus: A new theme park will be opening across the Esplanade at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, titled Disney’s Enchanted Forest, which is a theme park where you can journey into various forests, like an African Forest, a Amazon Rainforest, etc.
